San Pedro Golf Course
About
San Pedro Golf Course is an 18 - hole championship facility located on the banks of the San Pedro River. The golf course winds through the mesquite and along the banks of the San Pedro on the front nine. The back nine travels through four canyon like settings and finishes up with the 457-yard par four split fairway eighteenth hole. The golf course stretches out to 7187 yards from the tips and there are five sets of tees to accommodate golfers of all skill levels.
The surrounding vistas at San Pedro are unmatched by any other golf club in Southeastern Arizona. From various points on the course, the San Pedro River Basin can be seen and this Mark Rathert design stretches along those river banks to the natural canyon like settings with the Dragoon mountain range in the background. The elevation changes and cool crisp air provide a setting that will bring you back for the challenge.
The bentgrass greens will provide slick playing surfaces with some undulations to test your stroke. The key to play on hole # 2 - is to stay clear from the left side, as the San Pedro comes into play early in your round. Your second shot to this 457-yard par four will test your long iron game! The fifth creates a great approach to the green on this par five. The par four sixth requires precision off the tee, as there are two bunkers along the right side with a narrow approach to the green. The seventh is a cute par three that is followed up with a par four and the 558 yard par five ninth that requires two well placed shots as the right hand side is guarded by a pond as you approach the green. The left side approach is definitely your safety valve.
The back nine opens up with a straight away 400 yard par four followed by a 197 par three with a very tricky undulated green that slopes from left to right. Walk away with a three here and be happy. Holes 12 - 16 will offer you both scenery & challenges coupled with a great test of golf. The twelfth is as good a par four that exists. The tee shot leads you into a narrow area that favors the left side, as this is a slight dogleg right. The second shot will let you know if you can thread the needle as the approach is a gem. Once on this bowl shaped green area you will look back and see the beauty that Mark Rathert carved here. The ride to the thirteenth tee brings you to the highest elevation on the course, where the San Pedro River Valley surrounds you - encased by three mountain ranges including Cochises' Stronghold - where that once heralded Indian and his tribe staked their claim. The 605 yard thirteenth will require position to the right center on both your drive and second shot, as you approach to this green. The fourteenth resembles hole # 12 but is a tad longer. The fifteenth hole is a scenic par three with a drop of 50 feet from teeing area to green. The sixteenth and seventeenth give you a slight breather as you approach the finest finishing hole in Southeastern Arizona - the par four split fairway 457 yard eighteenth hole. Water comes into play off the tee as well as on the second shot to this green that is also guarded by a bunker as you approach the apron.
San Pedro is tough but fair with exceptional playing surfaces and a range of tees (5) that will test golfers of all levels. You won't tire at San Pedro - enjoy the scenery and the natural desert like playing conditions that will soon be heralded throughout the area.

Fun Outing
Tough layout. Greens are fast but in excellent condition. Played Copper tees which made course play a lot harder.
Great scenery. Will be back.
Great Value for a Decent Course
We were pleasantly surprised! There was a sign that said "Best Bent Grass Greens in Southern AZ". You know, they may be right? Excellent shape and very true putting.
Enjoyable Course
Course in very good condition. Not much roll on fairways and usually windy. Greens excellent!
Great greens---fast but true
A joy to play.
Great value, fun course
This course is not fancy, but has a great layout and plenty to challenge every part of your game. The greens are in good shape and have some challenging reads. I had a great time playing this course three times while I was in the area and would be very happy to find more like this one on my travels.
Great Conditions
I was impressed by the condition of the fairways and the greens!!!
SAN Pedro Golf Course, Benson, Az
The layout of the course is different then the usual 18 hole course. The 9th hole doesn't end at the club house. Also the person that checked us in at the golf counter was nice. But he should have mentioned something about the course being a long and hilly course for people walking with a push cart. It is a good thing my husband and I are pretty fit and have walked many 18 hole courses. We will return to San Pedro golf course to play another round and we will recommend our friends to play there.
Some help needed
The course was in very good shape. The guy/ golf pro ? behind the counter needs to work on his customer service skills and the two guys I was paired up with from Safford ...well enough said.Did I say the course was in very good shape?
fantastic course
This course was one of the best I have played in a while. The fairways and greens were in great shape. We were never held up by anyone and we were moving right along. It is a long course and I am glad we had a cart. Not sure if the allow walking as it might slow play up.
you can't beat this place
Come here to play golf--not the breath taking views. This course is in great shape. It's laid out so that every level can have a fun day. ( the 18th has a two pond lay out---you clear the first pond--and the second one is right there---this also means the area to drop your first shot is a little tight---but--it is very doable--)- The rough is cut so that it is playable but annoying-( that is why you're supposed to avoid it). The greens run true and are just the good side of normal. 3 out of seven days are windy---welcome to Arizona. This course has a nice restaurant overlooking the 18th hole..with good lunch food. This course is about three minutes off the inter-state--route 10. The only other course this close to the inter-state is Quarry Pines. San Pedro ( however) is not attached to some 55 and over snow bird housing development --- it is at the edge of a real Arizona town with "character"--Benson.
Absolutely play this course.
Ton of fun for the money
Snow bird winter in Tucson.easy to get to. Play is usually fast. Normally in good shape. Greens always fast. Will hate yourself if play wrong tees. boo. Not much water. Normally windy.will play it 20 times or more before we go back to IIllinois.it's not a 200 dollar course so don't expect perfection.
poor condition
Very wet, bad irrigation system, most distance markers were not visible
Pleasant Surprise
What a pleasant surprise in Benson, Arizona. They have some very nice greens, some of which have been attacked by a virus but it is apparent that they are concerned and really do care about the condition of this course not only the greens.
The fairways are in good shape and for the most part the greens are in pretty good shape. The views are top notch and add to the course.
There are some interesting holes that, if you have never played this course before, you need to take a moment to figure it out. At the end of my round I went in and made another t-time for a day later. The staff was more than helpful at both Check-in and before heading out. The starter tried to give me a few hints but again, having never played this course before, I didn't fully appreciate what he was telling me until I was in the middle of "stuff".. Upon my return a few days later, I knew where I was trying to go and it made playing even more enjoyable.
I will be back, and I will bring some friends as I enjoyed the experience very much.
They did have cart service on the course but I didn't make any purchases and I didn't visit the lounge area afterwards.
Great Lay Out with many shot considerations
This course provides an excellent array of shot making for all levels. Layout does not give the same shot on any hole so course management is critical. Course was very wet from recent rains, which provided little to no roll out on tee shots. Fairways were in good condition but had not been mowed so were a test. Rough along fairways was thick as they needed mowing as well. Bunkers were in bad shape with little sand and in many cases they had standing water. Greens were is good shape but slow, which required some adjustments to speed. Overall this course could be a real show stopper if enough funds were available to upgrade from tee to greens. But then again its a city course, which says a lot. Definitely worth playing.
a fun afternoon
its a good course to play for all level golfers. Rough was thick and some of the putting surface needs work. Green are true to breaks
This course is a very nice escape
Just off the interstate--( not 30 miles down several city streets to the foot of a mountain) , tucked in the back of a very alive town that has real hotels, real places to eat and shop ( Benson), is San Pedro Golf Course. It is the town golf course ( not a part of a housing development). You pull off the interstate, and play golf. The course is in fine shape...not great..fine. The fairways are covered with grass that is cut to just the right height to play well. The rough?? is rough... That is why you are supposed to hit the ball on the fairway...perhaps that is why they call it """ THE ROUGH""? The greens are laid out well, they are perhaps the best maintained part of the golf course. Also, very important, keep in mind that you are about 7,000 feet up in the air...my point? when it is 100 degrees in Tucson, it is only 85 in Benson AZ.
I say play this course..then eat in the Horse Shoe restaurant in town; it's down by the Benson train station The golf course is fine...the town is a taste of small town America...well worth the trip
Course in bad condition
So sad to say this but this course needs a lot of work. The rough was not mowed at all and it looks like no maintenance at all. The greens were decent but the fairways were ok. I will not play this course until it is under better management.
I have played this over the last few months and agree with another comment. Course is in decent shape and the value is second to none. - staff are super friendly. Lastly, the rough is to penalize those who cant hit it in the sort grass. - the journey continues eh
truckin'
i like to explore different courses and gave San Pedro a look...pleased to find lush fairways... rough is more patchy/rocky (but then again, you're not supposed to hit it there)...greens held when wet (early AM) with little break in most them... not the most scenic as I-10 traffic/road noise can be seen/heard... but all in all, not bad for the price.
BTW- earliest tee times are 06:45, NOT earlier as listed by GolfNow
Sorry your experience wasn't up to your or our expectations. It has only been open for 6 days after closing to overseed the course. We had rain the first 4 days we were closed to overseed so it was a late seeding for us. We did have to drop more seed a few days before opening so the course will be a little wet until after noon each day. The temps here are much cooler than Tucson so the water tends to stay well into the morning. We will be turning it down the week of the 24th and lowering the mow height. Its just that time of the year, we can't mow down immediately with grass only 7 days old. Its should be perfect as of Nov 1. Please stop in and mention this review and I will be glad to talk more.
