San Pedro Golf Course
About
San Pedro Golf Course is an 18 - hole championship facility located on the banks of the San Pedro River. The golf course winds through the mesquite and along the banks of the San Pedro on the front nine. The back nine travels through four canyon like settings and finishes up with the 457-yard par four split fairway eighteenth hole. The golf course stretches out to 7187 yards from the tips and there are five sets of tees to accommodate golfers of all skill levels.
The surrounding vistas at San Pedro are unmatched by any other golf club in Southeastern Arizona. From various points on the course, the San Pedro River Basin can be seen and this Mark Rathert design stretches along those river banks to the natural canyon like settings with the Dragoon mountain range in the background. The elevation changes and cool crisp air provide a setting that will bring you back for the challenge.
The bentgrass greens will provide slick playing surfaces with some undulations to test your stroke. The key to play on hole # 2 - is to stay clear from the left side, as the San Pedro comes into play early in your round. Your second shot to this 457-yard par four will test your long iron game! The fifth creates a great approach to the green on this par five. The par four sixth requires precision off the tee, as there are two bunkers along the right side with a narrow approach to the green. The seventh is a cute par three that is followed up with a par four and the 558 yard par five ninth that requires two well placed shots as the right hand side is guarded by a pond as you approach the green. The left side approach is definitely your safety valve.
The back nine opens up with a straight away 400 yard par four followed by a 197 par three with a very tricky undulated green that slopes from left to right. Walk away with a three here and be happy. Holes 12 - 16 will offer you both scenery & challenges coupled with a great test of golf. The twelfth is as good a par four that exists. The tee shot leads you into a narrow area that favors the left side, as this is a slight dogleg right. The second shot will let you know if you can thread the needle as the approach is a gem. Once on this bowl shaped green area you will look back and see the beauty that Mark Rathert carved here. The ride to the thirteenth tee brings you to the highest elevation on the course, where the San Pedro River Valley surrounds you - encased by three mountain ranges including Cochises' Stronghold - where that once heralded Indian and his tribe staked their claim. The 605 yard thirteenth will require position to the right center on both your drive and second shot, as you approach to this green. The fourteenth resembles hole # 12 but is a tad longer. The fifteenth hole is a scenic par three with a drop of 50 feet from teeing area to green. The sixteenth and seventeenth give you a slight breather as you approach the finest finishing hole in Southeastern Arizona - the par four split fairway 457 yard eighteenth hole. Water comes into play off the tee as well as on the second shot to this green that is also guarded by a bunker as you approach the apron.
San Pedro is tough but fair with exceptional playing surfaces and a range of tees (5) that will test golfers of all levels. You won't tire at San Pedro - enjoy the scenery and the natural desert like playing conditions that will soon be heralded throughout the area.

poor condition
Very wet, bad irrigation system, most distance markers were not visible
Pleasant Surprise
What a pleasant surprise in Benson, Arizona. They have some very nice greens, some of which have been attacked by a virus but it is apparent that they are concerned and really do care about the condition of this course not only the greens.
The fairways are in good shape and for the most part the greens are in pretty good shape. The views are top notch and add to the course.
There are some interesting holes that, if you have never played this course before, you need to take a moment to figure it out. At the end of my round I went in and made another t-time for a day later. The staff was more than helpful at both Check-in and before heading out. The starter tried to give me a few hints but again, having never played this course before, I didn't fully appreciate what he was telling me until I was in the middle of "stuff".. Upon my return a few days later, I knew where I was trying to go and it made playing even more enjoyable.
I will be back, and I will bring some friends as I enjoyed the experience very much.
They did have cart service on the course but I didn't make any purchases and I didn't visit the lounge area afterwards.
Great Lay Out with many shot considerations
This course provides an excellent array of shot making for all levels. Layout does not give the same shot on any hole so course management is critical. Course was very wet from recent rains, which provided little to no roll out on tee shots. Fairways were in good condition but had not been mowed so were a test. Rough along fairways was thick as they needed mowing as well. Bunkers were in bad shape with little sand and in many cases they had standing water. Greens were is good shape but slow, which required some adjustments to speed. Overall this course could be a real show stopper if enough funds were available to upgrade from tee to greens. But then again its a city course, which says a lot. Definitely worth playing.
a fun afternoon
its a good course to play for all level golfers. Rough was thick and some of the putting surface needs work. Green are true to breaks
This course is a very nice escape
Just off the interstate--( not 30 miles down several city streets to the foot of a mountain) , tucked in the back of a very alive town that has real hotels, real places to eat and shop ( Benson), is San Pedro Golf Course. It is the town golf course ( not a part of a housing development). You pull off the interstate, and play golf. The course is in fine shape...not great..fine. The fairways are covered with grass that is cut to just the right height to play well. The rough?? is rough... That is why you are supposed to hit the ball on the fairway...perhaps that is why they call it """ THE ROUGH""? The greens are laid out well, they are perhaps the best maintained part of the golf course. Also, very important, keep in mind that you are about 7,000 feet up in the air...my point? when it is 100 degrees in Tucson, it is only 85 in Benson AZ.
I say play this course..then eat in the Horse Shoe restaurant in town; it's down by the Benson train station The golf course is fine...the town is a taste of small town America...well worth the trip
Course in bad condition
So sad to say this but this course needs a lot of work. The rough was not mowed at all and it looks like no maintenance at all. The greens were decent but the fairways were ok. I will not play this course until it is under better management.
I have played this over the last few months and agree with another comment. Course is in decent shape and the value is second to none. - staff are super friendly. Lastly, the rough is to penalize those who cant hit it in the sort grass. - the journey continues eh
truckin'
i like to explore different courses and gave San Pedro a look...pleased to find lush fairways... rough is more patchy/rocky (but then again, you're not supposed to hit it there)...greens held when wet (early AM) with little break in most them... not the most scenic as I-10 traffic/road noise can be seen/heard... but all in all, not bad for the price.
BTW- earliest tee times are 06:45, NOT earlier as listed by GolfNow
A NICE PLACE WORTH THE TRIP
San Pedro is in fine shape. The place is a hidden gem.. I played for 15.00 dollars. The fairways are cut to just the right height--and there is grass! The greens are a little quick--but that is part of the game--the greens are in great shape.. The pace of play is perfect.
The area is about 10 degrees cooler than Tucson.
Course Continues to Need Work & Maintenance
Notwithstanding the 25-30+ mph winds, the course offers some very challenging holes. The tee boxes and fairways were in good condition, but if you are off the fairways we found a lot of tough rough. Most of which was muddy areas, patchy areas of some grass but with plenty of hard pan and rocks. The bunkers were suspect with many having mud and hard pan and/or patches of actual sand. The greens were running fairly quick, yet showed areas needing attention to augment grass in lieu of bare spotty areas which yielded bumpy putts. The putting lines were difficult to read. In essence the green fees seemed a bit high for the condition of the course. The course layout could be one of the best in southern Arizona if only the course could get the attention it needs.
The restaurant continues to serve very good post round food and refreshments.
Challenging layout.
Well designed layout - except that #9 doesn't bring you back to the clubhouse.
Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Greens quite fast and in very good shape.
YOU COULD DO A LOT WORSE
I just read the most recent reviews... As the deceased Joan Rivers would have said---oh please--grow up. No one seemed to mention that southern Arizona had just received a real snow storm and freezing cold for over a week. The guy in the pro shop? yes--the whole staff is a bit """dry"" I am not visiting from some other state...I play about 4 days a week all year long. There is not a golf course in southern Arizona that I have not played. The people in the pro shop are always bland. No one ever says hello--you are lucky if they look at you. They always just take your money and give you the keys to a cart.
But--now for why I hope you are reading this--the golf course--- it's fine--keep in mind--it is winter--you know --the season when grass dies??? The fairways are now narrow but fine...The greens are being prepared for the spring...The are very playable ( slow ) but fine. They are rolled out--they are slow--but they will be in great shape by March. You can go right now to many places in Tucson right now--and pay over 100 dollars for a round of golf and find the same conditions....well not the """same conditions"" each hole will have a 10 minute wait....and your burger and beer will cost you 30 dollars instead of 10....BUT--- i am sure the guy at the pro shop will smile and make small talk--- I know for 150 dollars I would. Play San Pedro it's worth the trip. While you are down this way-- stay over night in Bisbee and play TURQUOISE VALLEY The oldest course in Arizona and it has a par 6.... On the way home hit Del Lago... a course worth the money and great average food. AVOID KINO SPRINGS
Replace Pro-Shop Person
Despite some negative reviews herein, our foursome from Tucson decided to take things with a grain of salt, and try the course again after not playing it for quite some years. We were sorely ashamed of ourselves for ignoring the clear warnings from others. We are the type of guys that will forgive a lot of things, leave substantial tips, and do what we can to ensure everyone around us is having a great time. Sadly enough, we were not able to do any of these things at San Pedro. The course was in decent shape, and although the condition of the greens were overhyped, it was the incredibly unprofessional, poor attitude of the Pro Shop worker that made the entire outing distasteful. We presented coupons for a free lunch after we paid for the round, only to be told they were no good because we booked on Golf Now. Would have been nice to have such a disclaimer before traveling 45 minutes for the "deal". Nonetheless, we were cordial about it, only to be given SEVERE attitude about it at the pro shop. We were simply dismayed at the treatment we endured, and decided never to return. We will be sure to let our copious golfer pals know to steer clear of this "hack" of an organization. Suggestion? Fire the Pro Shop guy (he worked this past Saturday @ 10:00 AM).
Keeps improving every week
I was reading some of the past reviews and would like to advise you that the negative reviews from reviewer "u0000811562" are unfounded. This course is continuing to get better and better. The overseeding throughout the course is thick and plush. The grounds crew are working hard throughout the course. A few of the items include placing asphalt millings on the paths, mowing weeds, working on a sand trap that will be another highlight of the course and generally maintaining this jewel in the desert. The staff are very professional and "home town" friendly. I have never had a negative experience here and found that, if anything is needed from the restaurant, pro shop or course, all one needs to do is ask. I love this place!
Great course!
This is a great find! We have played the course a few times and the conditions continue to improve. Very relaxing course.
Good value for the price
Love the course, greens were a little rough this round.
YOU REALLY CAN'T GO WRONG WITH THIS PLACE
THIS COURSE IS ONE OF THE BEST KEPT SECRETS IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA. The course is in fine shape. The skill level is just enough for everyone to have a challenging good day. It has a club house with very good ---fair priced food. The whole place is very clean and relaxed. It's easy to get to--about 600 yards off interstate 10. I have played nearly every course in the Tuscon area. This is not the best course in southern Arizona--but dollar for dollar--you will not be disappointed.
very good shape
The course was in the best shape we have seen it for quite some time. Issues like potholes in the cart path have been addressed. The sand traps still some work as they are a little hard and not much sand. That being said they are better than Arizona National's bunkers. The only really bad thing was the weather. Very, very windy but of course, this is not the San Pedro's fault. Good experience overall.
pleasantly surprised
If you believed the past reviews , you probably would skip this course. Don't believe them. ( although I couldn't find a recent one ; it was a leap of faith in giving it a shot ) Glad I did. The course is almost completely back from over seeding. The fairways were a little long...but very playable. The greens were a bit sandy, but quick and receptive. ( yay! been playing slow and shaggy courses for ever, it seems. ) There were a few mushy areas in the fairways....and the cart paths could use some help....but I'm just being picky.
If Benson would advertise San Pedro to the Vail and Tucson markets , I'm sure they would get some loyal customers.
All in all , a great layout with flats to elevation changes....risk and reward holes....and a laid back atmosphere that I have only found out in Rio Rico. ( but that is a whole different discussion. )
We'll see wether San Pedro can keep prices down in order to compete with the Tucson markets. So far , so good.
Needs improvement
This course is going down. Maintenance is lacking. Greens have invasive grasses growing in. Fairways and tee boxes are overgrown.......cups not recently cut. Greens very slow........need to be mowed. Interesting layout. No beverage cart........Driving range closed.
Sorry you caught use preparing for overseeding. We had more things than usual to take care of. We had a weed growing in some of the greens that the previous superintendent could not take care of. Our new Super has removed all the weeds but it took some time. We are taking care of neglected areas to make this winter a great experience at San Pedro. Please visit us this winter to see the great improvement. Thank You
Nice greens
Love the course and a great staff. 10 am tee time, but they let us go around 9:30. 3 1/2 hours for 18 holes. Light traffic on the course. Let a single play through. A two some behind us but they only had to wait on us one hole. Cart girl only made one round, but her customer service was OUTSTANDING! Fairways good, greens were pretty true and maintained. Bunkers needed attention. Tee boxes much better than I can remember and the green on #5 was repaired since my last round here in March. I'll be back.
Sorry your experience wasn't up to your or our expectations. It has only been open for 6 days after closing to overseed the course. We had rain the first 4 days we were closed to overseed so it was a late seeding for us. We did have to drop more seed a few days before opening so the course will be a little wet until after noon each day. The temps here are much cooler than Tucson so the water tends to stay well into the morning. We will be turning it down the week of the 24th and lowering the mow height. Its just that time of the year, we can't mow down immediately with grass only 7 days old. Its should be perfect as of Nov 1. Please stop in and mention this review and I will be glad to talk more.
