Interesting
Well when we pulled into the parking lot I thought oh my goodness this is kinda eerie looking. It was really just the fact that the landscaping just made it look so dark. walking to the pro shop and I lady was sitting here watching TV, and she asked is there something I can help you with? I thought that was kind of crazy. Staff just was not very plesant. The couse was interestingly laid out. Several holes where it will depend on your lay up shot, over creeks, around corners. The fairway was pretty dry, good for nice rolls of your ball though. It was quite interesting how far you may have to drive to get to the next hole. Through a neighborhood and across roads. Would still definitely recommend this course probably very beautiful in the fall.
Rock Hard fairways
Course looked very nice. Course was very dry and fast. I don't recommend to shoot at the greens, ball will roll of. You must play short and have ball roll onto green. Fairways are narrow and tree lined with bunkers guarding greens. This is a very challenging course but a great value.
High grass.
It is a Scottish style coarse so the grass is high out of the tee box and off the fairway. The coarse is a great band for your buck...
Wet
Great golf for a great price. Stay on the fairway.
THIS COURSE HAS GREAT FEATURES
TEE BOX NEED SOME WORK GETOF THE WEED. COURSE WAS FUN TO PLAY. WILL PLAY LATER THIS YEAR. HAD TO FOURSOME TO COURSE MOVING
Not bad for the money
Its fall and the course has a million trees so it was impossible to find balls even in the fairway. The course is very tight on some holes and I really needed the score card to tell me how to get around it. The greens were in good shape though and the golfnow price was great. I would go back again in the summer.
This place is great
Water and trees. Water and trees and the greens r fast. Don't know if it's me but this joint seems long. Fairways r a little hacked up.overall great place
better hit it strait
very thin fairways lots of trees and water and houses (cars) but the beauty of it ill play it again
Fun Track!
Drove 1:20 to play there and would do it again! Some very unique holes that are great fun to play!
Great condition
Course was in great condition. Somewhat narrow with many doglegs. Greens and fairways were in fantastic shape. Check the card for creeks and water on blind shots. Very enjoyable course to play.
Great Rate
We played on Father's day, very nice staff and course. Also they asked if this was our first time here, we said yes, and they replied "Welcome".
We played from the blue tee. And the course was wonderful from them. We will be back.
Nice Course.
Walnut Run is a great value for the money. The reason for the negative reviews from other players is because they can't handle a course this tight. It is not a long course, but what it lacks in length, it makes for in difficulty. The greens are smooth and roll true. I am not sure what the other reviewer was talking about when he mentioned blind shots on many holes. The only blind shot on this course is on 18, and that is because the fairway slopes downhill. I will definitely play this course again.
To each their own.
I am somewhat confused by some of the negative reviews. I played the original 9 hole course many moons ago, and that was, indeed, "goofy golf". A few years ago some friends suggested we play Walnut Run. I was a little doubtful, but I agreed and I'm glad I did. What a pleasant surprise! Here was a real golf course. The kind I would call a "shotmakers" course, which makes the negative review of the "single digit handicapper" even more perplexing!
This is not a course where you can just bash it around and have a shot no matter where your ball winds up. There are quite a few very tight driving holes, and even some of the wide open holes still demand you place your drive in the proper spot. You'll make some mistakes your first time playing here. Local knowledge is definitely a good thing! It's called "shot placement", people!
As one reviewer mentioned, weather does pay a part here. Although there is plenty of contour and slope on the course, the overall character of northern Trumbull County is flat land. Thus, in wet times, there are spots on the course that have drainage issues. When playing in hot times the course becomes firm and fast, and is a delight to play, and the greens follow suit. They are quick, but putt very true. Plus, they come in all sizes, from "tabletop" greens to those that seem to be a half acre in size.
I will say for those of you who like to walk, ehhhhh, the front side might not be too bad, but the hike from the clubhouse to the 10th tee is like going on safari! This seems to be the bane of courses located in housing developments. Still, I see people walking the course every time I'm out there. Yet, I've encountered slow play only once, when a gang of real "chops" (in carts) was ahead of us, and they eventually let us play through.
I might also mention that Walnut Run offers a golf and steak dinner special. We did this once last year. The golf was delightful, and the steak dinner was fantastic! For those of you who read these reviews, I'd say give Walnut Run a chance. True, it's not a Country Club, but it's not a goat ranch, either! It's a challenging round of golf. I get the feeling that some of the negative reviewers expected the course to "submit" to their superior golf games. Well, this course doesn't submit to anybody! Try it. You just might like it!
Too quirky for my groups taste
The front was not too bad. But the back really made me believe that they built 18 holes where that only had room for 9.
Too many blind shots. Short par 4's (270) with 90 degree doglegs and hidden hazards.
I hadn't played here for about 15 years and forgot why until I went back. Sorry, I won't return.
Don't waste your time
Course is in terrible condition. You might as well tee off of the interstate because it's probably about a hard as the tee boxes. Greens are nice. Pace of play is absolutely horrendous. We were there for 5 hours and only played 14 holes and all of my group is sub 10 handicappers.
walnut run save your time
Average at best
Grass not mowed staff not friendly very slow play
Nice, but somewhat gimmicky course
This is a course I have played quite a bit since I grew up near it. I have seen this course in the kind of condition many country clubs would be jealous of, but I have also seen it in the condition that more closely resembles a cow pasture than a golf course. It is a sprawling lay out, which I'm sure makes maintenance difficult, so this course's condition mirrors what the weather has been like. The course changes character many times throughout the round. It begins with some tight drives on shortish holes that you may want to leave the driver in the bag for. As the front nine progresses, the holes get a little longer, but more open from the tee box. The back nine is definitely unique, you will probably only pull out the driver from the tee twice in the first 6 holes. You need to place your tee shots perfectly to leave good approaches. Miss your mark, and you're scrambling for a double bogey. The back finishes with a couple long, difficult holes that can make or break your round. At Walnut Run expect many doglegs, shots where you cannot see the green from the tee, and a course that forces you to use a wide variety of shots. All in all, I enjoy playing here when the weather has cooperated and it's in good shape. Among my friends, some hate this course, and some love it. It all depends if it suits their game. My title called this a "gimmicky" course. I say this because there are a lot of holes where your approach will be longer than your tee shot, there's lots of drastic doglegs, and it's challenges are more geared towards shot making rather than bombing it off the tee. If there's been some rain recently, don't hesitate to play Walnut, but if it's been a hot, dry summer, be prepared for an old style British Open links course type round. I once hit the green on the second hole with a 4 iron on a dry August day. Around 250 yards, which is just shy of my usual driver carry. The ball looked like it was bouncing in a parking lot.
Back nine has some very narrow tee shots
Played in the fall and leaves were difficult to keep off the course because almost all fairways are tree lined. There are 8 tee shots that require extreme accuracy with minimal margin of error. The 1st, 6th, 12th. and 17th play hard especially if against the wind. This is a course that is fun to play if you are on your game!
This course is a joke. Goofy golf at its worst!
Poor condition, lousy lay out, extremely slow play, no ranger, no help from the lack of staff. Complete joke. Recommend you take this off your list of courses. It is embarrassing for Golfnow to have this junk of a course on its list of courses.
A new local favorite
I had not played here since the original 9 holes was laid out some years ago. Friends talked me into playing last year (2011), and I was pleasantly surprised. A complete redesign with lots of holes that make you think. Some are very tight and demand good shot placement. Greens were in good shape and fairly quick, which was cool by me. I can't stand putting on a shag rug! If you wind up on the wrong side of the hole, look out! Excellent practice green w/sand trap and chipping areas plus a driving range for a complete warm up or practice. Definitely worth your while if you're a local or just in the area. We've played here more often than any other course in the area the last two years.
