Greens hard and bare in places. Traps terrible cond.
Windy day. Greens were hard and bare in places.
Traps uncared for.. Some had little or no sand. I love this course, but it requires maintenance attention.
high expectations not reached
We played 9 holes on the weekend. Web site states 9 hole costs on weekends. Staff member tells us we can't play 9 but only 18. I offered to play 9 and pay for the 18 and he was nice enough to charge only for the 9. Although he wasn't the most personable person. Coarse conditions were
Decent. Some wet areas were present. Small greens, most of which make for a challenging
Putt. High grass will cause you to loose balls.
I'm hit a 100 on a normal round as a beginner. This was a challenging coarse for me as a beginner. Ill go back, but I'm not in a hurry to do so.
Fun, easy, but overpriced.
A lot of what you are paying for is location. This is one of the closest courses to downtown Columbus. Wide open links course with no trees. Surprised how dry the course is in April with all the rain we've had. Lots of elevation changes which adds to the challenge but otherwise an easy course. Try it out if you can find a deal online. Otherwise, course fees are very overpriced.
Slow play
Played the front nine in over 3 hours. The two groups in front of us were 2.5 holes behind by hole #8. Ranger did nothing. Would like to go back but seriously considering not. They gave me and my son a rain check for nine holes and that helped a bit.
Good shape for early in the season
The course is in fine shape, but for the hard unraked traps. Rock hard. Pace of play was held up for 9 holes by two groups of golfer who should have been playing from forward ladies tees, but it was smooth sailing after the turn.
Challenging but great course for seniors from he forward mens tees(me!) and the young bucks from the tips.
Wind turbine
For 11 dollars to play a good course is awesome,so my review will be on condition. After a heavy rain the day and night before the course played well. Tee boxes were getting up to par, fairways were moist and looked good. Most of the greens didn't roll true but rolled ok. Again bad weather the previous day. Most of the links style rough is cut down for now,and hasnt had a chance to grow back yet so i didn't get in to much trouble. Again if you cannot get this deal for 11 dollars, 25 or 30 is a good price for this course. Its shaping up to be a really nice course as the year goes on.If the hacks would fix there ball marks and replace there 70's style divots the course will reward you back.
Phoenix links
Nice view of the city . This course needs a marshal who doesn't just ride around and wave. Got stuck behind a foursome that was playing a scramble !!! I was a single paired wit a walking single and they would not let us play through !!! This course pace of play is terrible usually. Go early an during the week if you want a more enjoyable round.
Nice Course but crowded play and very slow
Took my teenage son who plays travel baseball we never have time to golf so went very late in the golfing season. He has out grown his clubs so took one bag to share. For some reason this was a huge concer for their ranger who followed and harrassed us for 9 holes before we finally left. He was worried about our speed of play while we finished the front nine in under two hours. We gave up as a couple foursome ahead of them were averaging 20 minutes per hole but ranger never spoke to them. All we wanted to do was play back nine but left wtihout doing so even though we paid. Very abusive and rude ranger harassing father son trying to golf for his birthday shameful!!!!
Wonderful links style course within view of downtown Columbus.
Very challenging for first time visitor. Could possibly cut a few strokes after 2 or 3 rounds and becoming more knowledgeable of fairways and slopes of the greens. Very pleased with condition of fairways. All in all very pleased with my first experience and will definitely put Phoenix on my list to play again!
For the GolfNow Hot price we paid, you couldn't beat it.
The course was in really good shape for late in the year. The fairways were firm, the greens would hold a shot, but were fast. The heavy rough had been cut down & only a few places where you had to deal with leaves hiding the ball off the fairway. Bunkers were wet & compacted, but that seemed to be the case this year with several courses. Play moved along & we were done in just over three hours, but it helped when a foursome let us go through (2) on the back nine. We enjoyed it.
Just not worth it
I get it. The options for golf inside 270 are limited. I wish I'd just driven an extra 10 minutes. The cups hadn't been moved in a while and the edges were furry. The bunkers that didn't have water in them were like cement and filled with golf ball sized rocks. I'm surprised my beater of a cart made it all 18. I'm not surprised the cart was beat considering all the dips and bumps along side the fairways. Lies in the fairways were good as long as you didn't find one of the several grassless spots on each one. And the grounds crew insisting I hit onto the eighteenth green without a pin on it was not how I wanted to end things.
This course is open but challenging
I have played the course several times, it is in the best condition ever. The course requires precision off the tee hitting fairways to have reasonable chance to score well, greens are fairly easy to read for the average golfer. This course provides an enjoyable experience for those who play it.
Nice change of pace
This links course exceeded my expectations. It was a nice change from the typical course in the area. I was surprised by how well maintained the course is, and I enjoyed the interesting layout. I recommend it.
The only negative was a slow pace of play, despite several marshals riding around the course. Fix that and this is a real gem.
great view of downtown colmbus.
Great shape considering we played after it rained al weekend. for us, it was cartpath only, otherwise, we would of been done in under 4hrs. just a different course to play considering the other courses are all tree lined.
The course is very green. The greens are very small and undulating. This makes it challenging.
I liked the course because of the green fairways. Putting on the greens was a bit tough. Very well marked fairways.
Good condition, great value, a little slow
Phoenix is in pretty good condition for late Summer. They were aggressively watering during my entire round and while this was a little distracting the course conditions were ok because of it.
The only real downer was the pace of play. The course was actually fairly wide open but we got stuck behind a very slow handicapped group. The ranger came by a couple of times, saw us waiting (I was even sitting down on the grass) and did nothing to help us play through or hurry up the group. Maybe because they were handicapped? Either way, something should have been done and it took a 4 hour round and made it into a 4:45 round.
Over Zealous Rangers that Need Customer Service Training
I am from the Columbus area and have played Phoenix several times, but I will never play here again. We booked the GolfNow tee time for three players, and were joined by a single that also booked through GolfNow.
The fairways and greens were in decent shape when we played. This course does offer some challenge as a wayward shot will often leave you in the tall, tall grass.
My big problem with the course is the over-zealous rangers that hound you and are rude. Phoenix is unique in that the rangers drive the course steadily. On this particular day, the starter had advised us that there were no cart restrictions - no 90-degree rule, etc. Later, another ranger - doing his "rounds" came up to us and told us that the starter had told us wrong. This same ranger drove by at least five more times during the round and always had something to say. If this were my first time playing golf - I might never have picked up a club again thinking that all courses operated this way.
I sure wish that the ranger had taken some of his energy driving around the course and put it into raking the bunkers. They were deplorable. They should have been grounds under repair for the purposes of our round, they were that bad. The ranger also needed to remember that this course was a former landfill and not Muirfiled Village Golf Club.
I will not be back - the staff were not "dismissive" as noted above - they were quite the opposite. I would advise all beginners and those that wish to be left alone during play to steer clear of this course. There are far better courses for a similar price in the Columbus area.
cousrse was well maintained. fairways and greens were in good shape
Course was well maintained. Have done alot of early morning watering. Greens were very receptive. Bunkers were so-so.
For the end of August the fairways and greens were actually green.
The links style course was a nice change.
The employee behind the register was evidently having a bad day and attempted to make my day bad as well; the other employees were very cordial. The fairways and the greens were in excellent condtion. The sand traps were in need of attention. Overall I enjoyed playing the course.
Course was in great shape...outstanding value!
The course has really come back this summer thanks to a lot of work and investment by Phoenix management. They've returned the course to what it used to be (and should be), so it was a real treat. With the super hot deal, our rounds were a great deal. Pace of play was excellent. All around a wonderful round of golf on a very nice course!
