Tell your buddies that you’re planning a weekend of rural 9-hole golf out in the East Texas sticks, then take them to the little town of Frankston and surprise them with the astounding Pine Dunes Resort course. This new course is unlike anything in the state and must be played by anyone interested in the finer Texas tracks.

After Jodi Lutz purchased a rustic old course known as Dogwood Trails, PGA Tour veteran David Frost persuaded Lutz to develop the facility into a world-class layout. Jay Morrish did the work here, and he created a superb variety of holes.

As the name implies, the course actually rests on top of some natural sand hills in the middle of the Piney Woods. The look is so unique that you will not believe you’re in Texas. Anything out of the fairways results in sandy lies among the pine needles. The fairways are framed by both formal and natural bunkers that are reddish-brown in color. In fact when the course first opened, the natural sand framed most of the fairways, but the Bermuda has now grown into the sand, changing the rustic look. The club has even considered ways to eliminate the hardy Bermuda to re-establish the waste areas.

Of the notable holes, No. 5 stands out because of its alternate fairways, neither of which is very inviting. No. 6 is unique because it plays into a pit surrounded by bunkers and a nasty-looking lake on the left.

On the back, the sand is most evident on No. 11–a par 5 that forces a carry of the waste area on the second shot. Nos. 14 and 15 are separated only by a pond; Morrish eliminated the rough between the holes, creating the appearance of one massive fairway. The 15th hole plays downhill and is drive-able.

The ender goes 512 yards around a pond and tight dogleg right. The approach is uphill to an interesting bowl-shaped green.

Wherever you go in Texas, make sure you hit Frankston. As resorts go, this one is a bit rustic but the golf is as good as anywhere in the state.

Getting there : From Dallas take Hwy 175 east to Frankston. Drive South on 155 for 6.2 miles to County Rd. 319. Turn right on 319 for 1.2 miles to the course.

Terrific

Very simply one of the best golf courses I've played for the money anywhere in the country. Just a gem. This place is no frills when it comes to the pro shop and clubhouse but I came to play golf. Such a great experience I got a hotel room in Tyler and played it again the next day. Will be back at least once a year. From out of State.

Hmmm course conditions should reflect price

Normally I enjoy the course just not today. Water was in most of the bunkers, debris covered majority of the tee boxes and tree limbs & debris scattered through out the fairways. I understand weather caused this but like the title states.. course conditions should reflect pricing. I shouldn't have to search under branches tree limbs etc on the fairway to locate my ball. I'd still recommend playing just maybe not after poor weather.

Course is being upgraded somewhat. More care of hazards and removal of brush. On course bathroom facilities have yet to be addressed.

Put It On Your Playlist

If you haven't played this course, you need to make the trip. Could very well be one of the top 5 or 10 in Texas! There isn't a bad hole on the course and each set of tees provides a challenge. Good players can tip it out and have all they can handle. Exceptional layout!

Fantastic greens

Played at 7:30 as a single. Since it was cold and recent rain on the course I played the White tees. Course was still a little challenging for me. Greens were being mowed just before I hit into most greens so it took a little longer to play the round. Greens rolled perfectly and were very smooth. Fairways were wide enough to hit driver on most holes. A few did require less than driver to stay short of hazards. Saw the marshal on a couple of holes even though there were very few golfers out. Friendly and helpful staff. Will play again when We are in the area.

Best Course in East Texas

This is one of the best courses with an excellent practice area in Texas. I would recommend this course for everyone to play. The prices are a little high for the area and distance you have to travel to get there, but if you can get a Hot Deal or a discount for play, take it, it is worth it. I wish the course was closer to me so I could play it more. The course stays in great shape and the greens are some of the best I've played on.

Best east Texas course

A gem in the heart of east Texas. With rain shutting everything down in DFW on Sunday I decided to head east. It was well worth the trip. This is a challenging layout cut right into the piney woods that makes great use of the terrain and landscape. Beats the heck out of the dfw black clay. Since chance of rain scared everyone away I had the course all to myself so pace was excellent. Greens were firm and fast. Fairways the same. I found a great place to go when I head black home for a visit.

Great track and beautiful shape in late Sept.

Tees, fairways and greens immaculate and cut out of forest. Cart paths mostly missing and bathrooms hard to find. Facilities old and average but you'll love the golf. No two holes alike and a great challenge. Really fun!!

Hidden East Texas Gen

The course was in great condition for this time of year. It is not a course that allows you to use driver off of every tee and keeps you thinking about shot placement.

Great place!! A little dry

It was a great layout but it was a little dry. Friend I played with stated it is usually a lot better looking but you could tell they just punched the greens and tee boxes not too long ago. Will definitely try it out again!!!

Great golf course

Beautiful golf course. Very tight, so you better hit it straight, but well worth the drive. Everyone in East Texas should play it at least one time.

Always Nice

Course looked great. Greens were very firm and much slower than I anticipated, but that could be due to the time of day that we played. I had only one complaint outside of the speed of the greens and that was some sand on a couple of holes was inconsistent with the rest of the course. However, with all that said, I love playing there and will be back when I have the opportunity.

The weather was really hot but the course condition was excellent. Fairways were mowed good and the greens were moderately fast but ample size.

Lots of sand as the name implies but traps were well kept.

A bit pricey and I would only play with a Golfnow discount.

Great fairways... Greens in rough shape

In my opinion this course is a little overpriced. I will only play if I catch a hot deal. Considering there's really no cart paths, just worn dirt areas to drive along that are bumpy. Best to just drive on the fairways for a smoother ride. The greens all had a lot of rough spots in them causing inconsistent rolls.

The good:

Course layout was really good. Challenging holes making you think about every shot. Definitely not a driver off the tee bombs away type of course. Tight fairways guarded by trees and lots of bunkers throughout the course. Practice facilities were great!
