Pine Dunes Resort and Golf Club

About
Tell your buddies that you’re planning a weekend of rural 9-hole golf out in the East Texas sticks, then take them to the little town of Frankston and surprise them with the astounding Pine Dunes Resort course. This new course is unlike anything in the state and must be played by anyone interested in the finer Texas tracks.
After Jodi Lutz purchased a rustic old course known as Dogwood Trails, PGA Tour veteran David Frost persuaded Lutz to develop the facility into a world-class layout. Jay Morrish did the work here, and he created a superb variety of holes.
As the name implies, the course actually rests on top of some natural sand hills in the middle of the Piney Woods. The look is so unique that you will not believe you’re in Texas. Anything out of the fairways results in sandy lies among the pine needles. The fairways are framed by both formal and natural bunkers that are reddish-brown in color. In fact when the course first opened, the natural sand framed most of the fairways, but the Bermuda has now grown into the sand, changing the rustic look. The club has even considered ways to eliminate the hardy Bermuda to re-establish the waste areas.
Of the notable holes, No. 5 stands out because of its alternate fairways, neither of which is very inviting. No. 6 is unique because it plays into a pit surrounded by bunkers and a nasty-looking lake on the left.
On the back, the sand is most evident on No. 11–a par 5 that forces a carry of the waste area on the second shot. Nos. 14 and 15 are separated only by a pond; Morrish eliminated the rough between the holes, creating the appearance of one massive fairway. The 15th hole plays downhill and is drive-able.
The ender goes 512 yards around a pond and tight dogleg right. The approach is uphill to an interesting bowl-shaped green.
Wherever you go in Texas, make sure you hit Frankston. As resorts go, this one is a bit rustic but the golf is as good as anywhere in the state.
Getting there : From Dallas take Hwy 175 east to Frankston. Drive South on 155 for 6.2 miles to County Rd. 319. Turn right on 319 for 1.2 miles to the course.

Worth the drive
Great golf course. Quiet, no houses lining the fairways, no gimmicks, just golf. definitely lives up to the hype. I will go back in the summer when everything is green.
Just Pure Golf
Great course! I had played it before about 7 years ago and loved it then too. I would highly recommend making the drive to play this one. No fancy clubhouse or facilities, just pure golf greatness.
Fast greens
I used to be a member here So I should not be surprised by all the leaves strewn across the fairways. If you stay on the fairway you still may have a hard time finding your ball. Every leaf in the fairway was shining brightly so finding my ball proved difficult to say the least. The times I was off the fairway meant a lost ball. The course has never, to my knowledge, cleared leaves from off the fairway in the trees. It is fall so leaves are expected to be on the ground. At least make an attempt. The greens were fast and as I read in another review, forget the break. You'll be fooled every time. Although there is a lot of negative in this review I have to say that I love this course. I have a natural fade but enjoy trying to work a draw into my game. This course provides that opportunity. In the summertime there is no better place to play in southeast Texas. The staff members are always courteous , polite and friendly.
Thanksgiving
Course is being prepped for winter, green speed difficult to read, forget the break its winter. Keep the ball in play for a chance to find it, provisional when not.
Nice layout
Golf is exceptional
Facilities are not
What else is there to say?
Using the term "resort" is taking liberties in my opinion.
Great golf!
This is a MUST play for anyone. Beautiful track, hole after hole, a real treat to play. I recommend this as on par with the great golf courses anywhere! Just do it!!
Always nice
Had a very nice Saturday on Pine Dunes again.
Even it was quite busy on the course the pace of play was excellent .
Always enjoy this lovely course. Its always worth to go to Pine Dunes ,even if you have to drive a few hours.
Special thanks to Jodi an Allison .
Best layout in East Texas
You come to Pine Dunes for golf and nothing else. The facilities are mediocre. Good practice area though. It hadn't rained in a while but you couldn't tell because the course was in great condition. You really feel like you're all by yourself with just the deer and the forest. This course has the best layout in all of East Texas and the greens are quick, undulated, and in phenomenal condition. The sand waste areas are very cool as well. I'll definitely return. Also the burgers at the clubhouse are superb.
Met my high expectations
drove out of my way to play based on reviews and not disappointed. Pro Jay Mitchell was down home friendly as was the whole staff. Course condition was great- loved the bent grass greens. Tremendous value on a beautiful and non-punishing course. Played 18 on a Saturday as a twosome in under 3 hours. Quaint grill house and great burger to boot. Worth a detour if on I-20.
Hidden Gem in Frankston, Texas
One of the finest golf courses I have ever played. Greens were punched and sanded a week before we played but were in good shape. The fairways were flush and the tee areas were good as well. The practice facilities are top notch. They have a large driving range with plenty of room and a very good short game practice area. The practice green is very large and the slope of the practice green is very ideal to what you see on the course. The Pro was extremely nice and helpful. There are different sets of tees that provide a challenge depending on your handicap. If you haven't had an opportunity to play this course you need to put it on your to do list. You will not find another course with the quality and for the price you pay at Pine Dunes.
Excellent condition
A friend from Tyler and I met at Pine Dunes and enjoyed a beautiful day on a well kept course. We will meet their again and play this gem in the woods.
Beautiful course
I've played out here a handful of times now and absolutely love it. It's a beautiful course with beautiful surroundings that is extremely well maintained.
unbelievable condition
With the lack of rain and highs over 100 you would expect the course to be dried out. Not the case at all. And even with the greens having been aerated recently, putts rolled quick and true.
Great Public Course for the Area
I live in Houston so I am used to a certain level of public courses (extremely nice). Visiting the Tyler area once every 6 weeks has left much to be desired from a public course perspective. Tyler is very much centered around country clubs, but I visit rarely so paying for a membership is simply out of the question. This course is in amazing condition. I would honestly rate this course above Hollytree and Cascades in Tyler. It was challenging and to be honest the carts need GPS or they need more visible 200, 150, and 100 yard markers, but other than that I loved the course.
Best public course in Texas
Completely lives up to the hype. Played twice, once from Blues and once from Golds. It felt like two different courses as the tee change does change club selection and strategy fairly significantly off the tee. Course was in pristine condition.
Excellent condition
The golf course itself was top notch. The clubhouse and grill weren't very impressive but the course was in pristine condition.
One of the finest courses in Texas
A very well maintained courses from tee to green. Well worth the drive from Dallas. This course is in the top five best courses in the state! Will play here again.
Stay and Play Warning
Our group opted for the stay and play package which includes green fees and an overnight condo. That's why I'm giving the overall experience an average rating. The good reviews for the course written by others are merited. It's an excellent course for straight hitters. In great shape and perfectly groomed. The condo and facilities - not so much. The condo was worse than any other stay and play we've tried. I know it's tough providing first-class services and facilities in the middle of nowhere, but the facilities are way below average. But the golf is great, so get yourself a hotel room in Palestine (20 minutes) and give it a go.
I love Pine Dunes!
Pine Dunes is a great course. Great layout/design, excellent conditions and nice/courteous staff. Best of all, it wasn't crowded at all (not a surprise mid-day on a Wed.) With the Golf Now deal, it was an outstanding value. I love Pine Dunes!
Beautiful golf course
Pine Dunes is a jewel of a golf course. A little out of the way, but well worth finding it. Always in great condition, beautiful layout, great greens.....it is a wonderful golf experience. It is a challenging track from the tips, but there are several sets of tees to make it playable for any level golfer. You will not be disappointed ! One of Texas' finest daily fee golf courses. It should definitely be on your bucket list !
