River Bend Golf Club
About
River Bend Golf Club combines some of the most unique play in the area with a course designed to provide an exciting golfing experience for players of all levels. Beautiful oak trees and meandering streams give the golf course its character, with elevation changes, multi-tiered greens and challenging areas of forced carry-including water features-and areas of forced lay-up in a links-style course, especially on the front 9. The back 9 is a more traditional golf course. All of this combined with the Texas wind makes River Bend a formidable challenge for even scratch golfers. It's one of the only only true links courses in south Texas. The staff is super and the course is very affordable. River Bend Golf Club has a unique practice facility that features an aqua range with an island green. A large putting green makes the Maverick a super practice area.
Distance: About 33 miles southeast of downtown San Antonio and worth the trip. Take Rt 181 from the Southeast side of San Antonio. The course and facilities are located in the Avalon Subdivision.

Good overall but could easily be better
We played using a Hot Deal low price green fee with a late afternoon tee time. There were only a few groups on the course along with a single or two. No one held us up and we easily let singles play through.
The course is mostly as described in the About section. It is set in an open area of gently rolling hills with newly developing neighborhoods alongside. The driving range is a lake into which you hit floating balls. The practice greens are small.
The fairway grass is a bit spotty and the greens are close to being very good following recent treatment. The bunkers are in good shape and abundant but are easy to avoid due the wide fairways.
The main thing this course lacks is proper signage and/or a course guidebook. There are blind landing areas for tee shots plus dogleg holes that are hard to picture from the tee. The scorecard and the tee box signs lack any hole maps or diagrams. Some signs are missing. The carts do not have GPS.
I do give them high marks for having five tee box choices plus a sign at the first hole with recommendations on which ones to play based on age/handicap. All courses should do this.
Bogey Man
I really like this course. The greens have recently been sanded but should get better quickly.
Great peaceful game
Customer service was wonderful I even came across a raccoon after me hitting the drive great natural and nature course
Terrific place to play golf
I've played this golf course over 50 times and still can say I've never been dissatisfied by the maintenance or for that matter the challenge of this course. Number 9 is wide open but is one of the longest par 4's I've played, with the wind almost always in your face it's the most challenging to try for that negative number. Overall one of the finest municipal around....
Players
It is a good course but the back nine was piled up with players but over all the golf course is good I would go play it again on another note would like to see the lay out of golf course don’t know if you all carry maps of holes. We were blind sided with the holes.
Great Course
This really is a great course for location and money. It’s been really dry here so they are doing their best to keep it green and soft. Fairways are nice but very hard right now... the course plays over 7000 yards but still has some drivable holes. Overall it’s a great course and really do give it a 4 overall..and I did shoot a 74 so it’s nice.
Fun course in great shape!
Course was in great shape! Greens rolled smooth and were clean. Staff is always very friendly.
Terrible
Golf pass should review a course before they claim as a hot deal.
River bend golf course
Nice layout, the pace was good and a friendly staff.
Pace of Play
Played here multiple times. Pace of play is terrible. 9 golf carts from 3 different groups. Middle of the week and middle of the day. Zero attempt to speed up the local elders that hinder play and refuse to let players play through. It seems at this course the regulars intentionally avoid allowing anyone to play thru. 3 hours and I packed up after nine holes and left. What makes this worse I was 1 under thru nine holes. If this was a one off I wouldn’t be leaving this review but my experience with this course has been the same every time I have played here. I know it hurts certain players feelings to be told to pick up the pace or pick up your ball and move on after playing their approach shot laying 7 but when a course refuses to address the problem it ruins golf for everyone that is stuck behind waiting for hours and hours for a round of golf. Overall this course is a good course but locals are ruining it.
Not Bad
This course was challenging especially for the price. I would recommend anybody who’s interested in coming south to play this course. I will definitely play again.
