Will definitely come back
Winterstone is a great value, fun track, and surprisingly a decent challenge (given a little wind and it could be a good challenge) You will not regret making a trip to play winterstone. I played it after the course received significant rain and the grass was still dormant. The fairways looked like they will be great playing surfaces in the spring and summer, as well as the greens. The rough is consistent. All in all, the playing surfaces were and will be very good for play.
The layout has a lot of cool holes. The par 3s are solid holes and vary in length well. The par fives all provide good risk reward options. There are a lot of good par 4s. My only complaint about the layout involves the par 4s. Due to land limits I’m sure, the par fours are pretty short. There are only a few over 400 yards, so for the better golfer, those holes don’t provide as much of a challenge.
Final notes on the layout, make sure you got a good fairway finder shot. Those fairways are really tight in a few spots, so be ready for that. Lastly, while it is a nice place, it is very hilly so I wouldn’t expect it to be a walking course.
In conclusion, Winterstone is a great value and a really good track to play. Well worth playing multiple times. If you haven’t been there, I would suggest making a trip. You’ll enjoy it.
Beautiful, Fun, and Challenging Course
We have a regular foursome that always walks. We teed off at 8:15 on Sunday 8/4/19 and finished at 12:10. The course was in awesome shape and the marshals kept it moving. This course is beautiful. There weren’t many other walkers, which is a shame because we commented several times about how the next tee boxes were normally very close to the previous greens. Plus, I think a first time player who rides won’t totally appreciate how beautiful the course is. It’s not the easiest course to walk but there were still a few times that we had to wait - but nothing out of the ordinary. The fairways were perfect and the greens were quick but not unfair. There are plenty of tee box choices for all levels of golfers. We’ll be back. I highly recommend this course.
Horrible Experience
I’ve played this course several times and love the layout. Unfortunately today’s experience was not what the course deserves. It started with the pro shop where the person who checked us in was clearly unhappy that we were there and made no effort to hide it.
The starter got us off within 15 minutes of our tee time. They had one of their regular groups was larger than expected.
The pace of play was very slow. The group ahead of us lost contact with group in front of them by the third hole. A “Marshall “ would drive by but was not at all interested in doing anything.
Left to right....
Awesome course! Really worth playing. Makes you wish you lived nearby.
I caught it after a rainy week near the end of the season. The zoysia grass on the fairways was starting to shut down for winter, making it dry, yet the fairways were wet. Odd combination...
Still...wow. A great course for the $$, or at any price. Interesting layout. Great greens. Awsome. Will really test you. Bring your fade or lefty draw. Sadly my draw wanted to be a hook... the course won.
Wonderful staff!
Three issues... 1) They were out of range balls. I like to warm up and dial in... couldn't. 2) there is no GPS in cart. Yardage markers are few and questionable. 3) Too many twosomes. The pace of play could have been better.
WinterStone good and bad
Beautiful course...but they had so many playing at once. They paired me off with two other guys who just dragged and dragged each hole. We had to let 4 groups go ahead of us. I wish I had taken off on my own..very frustrating and over 5 1/2 hrs to play due to so many people. I may try it again but will go it alone or not at all....
My son loves playing this course when he comes to visit. Greens were a little rougher than normal. The staff forewarned us when we arrived. We still had a great time.
A little disappointed
Played Winterstone last year and was impressed. This year.. not so much. First, not sure what was wrong with the staff, but all inside the pro shop were very unfriendly.. no greeting or have a great round. Just processed payment. The starter/marshals were very friendly and helpful. Overall the course did not seem to be in the same great condition as last year. A few greens were in bad shape and playing the course for the second time realized many holes has the basic same layout... Up and down hill with narrow landing zone.
Better than expected
Very nice. Had some hills. Would not walk this one. Winterstone spotless and fun to play. Spread out...didn't really see anyone else and the pace was very good. Will play it again!
Good shape
Winterstone is in great shape. The greens were smooth, fairways and tee boxes were great and the rough wasn't over grown. This course has a nice layout. The pace of play was good on a crowded Sunday morning. Our foursome played in just over 4 hours. There was very little waiting to hit a shot, if any.
Best course for the money!
Wont find a better area. Its best public course in the KCMO area
Awesome Course!!!
Played in March so the fairways are not green yet but they were in great shape. The greens were in good condition. The greens are very challenging and fast the day we played. This is one of the nicest Courses in The metro.
Long walk
The course was in great shape but the cart path only added 45 minutes the the round. Even hitting good shots you had 100 -150 yard walk to your ball so you can imagine what it was like for a poor shot.
Must Play if your in Kansas City
Man.. you have to see this place.. we played in early March and the greens were awesome. Everything was brown since it was winter, but the greens were amazing. I will have to come back and play during the summer. This course is NICE!
Windy, warm winter day
Winterstone is a good layout with various challenges for players of all levels. A midweek winter round was played on a warm and windy day. The course was busy which led to some waiting between shots. Our round took an even four hours. The grasses are still dormant in the fairways and rough. The greens were fair. The speed of the greens was down a little but it is expected for this time of year. With 5 sets of tees you could have drivers and long irons or drivers and short irons for approach shots. Hills and lots of trees add to the desire to keep the ball in the fairways. The staff is always 5 star. Can;t wait to go back!
This course rocked!!!
Fairways were beautiful even for February. Course offers great challenges. Go play!!!
MN senior
Left Minneapolis western suburbs 7 a.m. Sunday morning... teed off at Shoal Creek @ 1:30 p.m. Played Winterstone on Monday. I give both courses 4 star ratings. They're both on par with Links of Northfork or Willingers in the Minneapolis area (Rush Creek = 5 star). What fun it was for a Minnesota boy to get in a couple rounds the end of January. I'll be back!
Great conditions for November. Evil pin placements.
The course was in great shape. It's a fun and somewhat tough layout but fair. However, the pin placements for several holes were pushing the limits a bit too much. Several holes had the pin either in the middle of the steepest slope of the green or right on the edge and it really made those holes frustrating when you hit a couple of really good shots and have looks at birdie only to see your ball act like a boomerang if you don't hit an absolutely perfect putt.
