Chehalem Glenn Golf Club sprawls across beautifully hilly terrain, providing a course that is not for the faint of heart. The course is defined by the dramatic changes in elevation, which can make it tough to walk. The steep hills make this a tough golf course even for high handicappers. Uphill, downhill, and sidehill lies abound and you'll also face forced carries to narrow landing areas as well as blind layup shots. The more open front nine is player friendly and the back nine is where it gets tougher with mostly tree-lined holes and more strategically placed bunkers. The golf course is as scenic as it is challenging with elevated tees and greens that overlooks the surrounding hills and valleys. The beauty and difficulty of the course has built Chehalem Glenn Golf Club a reputation as one of the greater Portland area's must-play courses.

Very nice fairways and greens

Played this course day after it rained and it was still in beautiful shape along the fairways, greens, and even the first cut. Great layout with great views from tee boxes. Excellent course.

Great course for winter play.

Best drainage of any course I've played in the region. As long as you have the right gear, a very enjoyable experience/

Great day out.

This is my home course and I would recommend it to anyone. Although the course is a bit more difficult that most of the courses around, the beautiful scenery, rolling hills, and great year round conditions make it a great play for golfers of any level.

What a great course

I always have fun playing this challenging course. It's close proximity to Portland, long Par 5s and beautiful surrounding hills make this an outstanding place to play.

Beautiful course with great scenic views. Very challenging back nine.

Started on the back nine where there are lots of trees and deep ravines. Blue tee distances were challenging and black tees will give guys with single digit handicaps a tough time. Next time we'll go to the white tee. Course had been aerated within the last two weeks but was in relatively good shape. Don't plan on walking unless you're an iron man type. You can enjoy the beautiful scenery even if you're not playing well.

changed

Lots of changes, as nickesquire noted... Play this course many times a year. One of the best courses in the area in my opinion. Definite top 5. The changes are VERY sad to see. Yes I know about playability and getting paying customers through for revenue. But, this was one of the best and most unique courses in the area and a great challenge. A real gem and great to see for the entire metro area. Now it's become one of the herd, at best. Sorry to see this course cave to changes for playability along the lines of Skamania Lodge... Have given it three attempts to adjust to the changes, but it's just is not the same course. Probably won't be back, such a disappointment.

Walked

Chehalem Glenn

Walked the blues (6260/71.1/137) in 4 hours, teeing off @ 1:50 on a Golfnow prepaid Hot Deal for $20.

They have changed 4 holes since I last played here which has shortened the course app. 300 yards & lowered the slope from 140 to 137 on the blues.

#9 went from a very difficult dogleg left par 4 to a much shorter straight away par 4. Good for pace of play perhaps, but it went from an excellent, challenging golf hole to a uninspiring, short, uphill par 4.

#12 they converted from a par 5 to a par 4. The tee boxes are now basically in the middle of the old fairway where a good drive was before. It is now a medium length par 4. Probably much easier for the average golfer to clear the forced carry with a driver 1st shot than a 3 wood 2nd shot, assuming they hit a good drive on the old layout.

#13 went from a long, narrow par three to a much shorter par 3. Huge difference in the 3 iron I hit last summer and the SW I hit today.

#17 went from a long, tough narrow par 4 to a reachable par 5. They jacked the tees back 50-60 yards and made new tees beside #18 green. Definitely easier as a shorter par 5 than a longer par 4.

Overall, it's an easier course with these changes. However, if you stray into the native stuff, there are generous amounts of yellow, red and white stakes waiting to add strokes to your score quickly. Assuming you avoid all those, then 80 to 100' tall trees and knee deep in places British Open style rough await... You have to keep it in the short grass and be able to shape your shots on numerous holes to play well here, in addition to navigating the big, undulating greens.

The first few holes are fairly straight forward and relatively wide open. It lulls you to sleep for what is ahead... the back nine is tighter and has more trouble and is roughly 2 strokes tougher than the front in my opinion.

The big, undulating greens were fairly smooth and putted medium speed.

The fairways and first cut of rough were both well maintained, you generally had good lies. Both were generally lush with a few bare spots here and there. Several short par 4's and the par 5 fairways had a decent amount of divot damage in the 100 yard area, more than I would normally expect.

The tees were good even though a few had some divot damage that could use fixing.

The sand traps were excellent, well maintained with yellowish to brownish, fluffy sand.

The only negatives were that it was over 90 degrees when we teed off & there was a 2 club wind most of the day that was HOT. The cart gal came around twice, she could have been used more because only the four par 3's had water.

This is a very challenging course to walk, constantly up/down hills plus several of next tees are a hike from the last green.

The overall condition was good, better than I expected after a hot, dry summer. The customer service in the pro shop was excellent, they got me right out paired up with a 2some before my scheduled starting time.

Very nice municipal, public course

I agree with other reviewers that Chehalem Glenn is not a walking course. Best to rent a cart as the hills are everywhere and some are very steep. The course is varied in length and difficulty so it holds your interest, and many holes have long wild grass ravines to traverse. The surrounding rolling hills and Douglas firs make it scenic. Enough water hazards to get your attention.

A wide variety of holes. Fun!

I don't play here much and was aching to get back, but was disappointed to find several holes had been changed DRAMATICALLY. I will be a little less likely to return. It's about an hours drive for me anyway.

A Hidden Gem

I believe that Chehalem Glenn is one of the best values in the NW. If the greens were a little more consistent it would be an absolute winner. It is challenging and the recent changes have made it better while still having some teeth.

Delightful but Hilly Course

This is the 2nd time I played this course. While the fairways were in good shape, the greens could use some TLC. Even though they were extremely slow (needed a good mowing), divots were everywhere! The pro shop provided divot repair tools free of charge, but I don't think many used them. Other then that, it is a solid course that one should strongly consider using a cart unless that want a real workout!

Has potential, decent layout, room for improvement.

Good setting for a course nestled in the hills of Newberg. Course has a lot of fun holes and a few that failed to impress. You could tell it's a new course and they are working towards improving it. A few holes on the back were being re routed which made for an inconsistent playing experience. Play came to a screeching halt on the back 9 as 1 group slowed everyone down. Should have been an easy fix for a marshal but no one was around. Also I recommend a cart unless your interested in a hike or two.

Walked

A difficult walk --very up-and-down, seemed like mostly UP.

This is an outstanding suburban public course, quite challenging for the once-a-week golfer.
For an oldster like myself (67), walking and carrying was quite tiring, more than any other course I've played in Oregon (including Bandon Dunes, Black Butte Ranch, Sandpines). It's walkable, but be prepared.

Not a walking course

This is a cartball course, often with horrible green to tee transitions, Plus the practice areas are horribly located as they increase the walk unforgivably. The course was routed with little imagination, and next to no knowledge of how to use the terrain appropriately. The course is over watered, and the greens excessively soft, and slow. I have to wonder if they have a trained superintendent, or just a hobbyist grass grower.
