Royal Niagara Golf Club - Old Canal Course
About
The Old Canal Course is one of three nine-hole courses at the Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club. Situated between the scenic Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail, the Old Canal Course is named after the historic 120-year-old Welland Canal that borders it. The challenging layout was designed to championship standards, employing several tricky elements including carefully sculpted fairways, rolling greens, and king-size bunkers. True to its name, the golf course features plenty of water throughout. There are several dramatically placed tees perched on the edges of the canal, providing stunning scenery that is unmatched in the Niagara region. All three courses at Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club were built to the same high standards, but each one offers a unique set of challenges.

Holy Goose Problem BATMAN !!!
As a local, I have the opportunity to play this course whenever I'd like, but what disappointing course conditions. Let's start with the good
Pros:
> course layout is challenging and fun
> the bunkers are high quality sand
> the fairways are as soft as a pillow
Cons:
> $14 for a SMALL bucket of range balls.
> $18 for a LG bucket of range balls.
> There is so much goose crap (and I can't stress this enough), that the only way to putt would be to have brought a broom or leaf blower. They have the biggest goose problem I've ever seen in the Niagara Region. The geese strut around without fear of golf carts or anything, they sit on the putting greens, eating it up. My recommendation would be to rescue one (or three) of the many loveable dogs at the pound and give them to the grounds crew. The geese have simply ruined this course.
If you want to play another well manicured course, in this price range, there are several better choices in the village of (nearby) Chippewa in much better condition than "Royal Geese Niagara"
Poorest Greens in Niagara
Bad Greens very slow, need a Crockett mallet to get the ball to the hole. Course not busy at all go figure with these conditions. To many blind shots from over grown areas. They sent the beverage cart girl home because of lack of play, total disregard for the people that were out playing the course. carts are hand me downs from other Kanefff courses Save your money and play another cheaper course and you will be much happier.
Manager Enforcing Archaic Rule
My friend and I went to play here. Great layout. My friend had a mock tee like the one Tiger first wore. He was told he was not allowed to play without a collar. The young fellow at the register seemed uncomfortable enforcing this rule but told my friend he had to buy a shirt for $70 in order to play. The young employee said it was up to the manager who was standing right there and not letting my friend play without a collar. The starter outside later agreed that enforcing the rule was in bad taste but couldn't say anything. Because my friend lives nearby he was able to go home, grab a collared shirt and get back within 30 minutes. They gave us a tee time to accommodate that but we thought that the entire situation was unnecessary and completely ridiculous. Pro golfers and others have played numerous times in numerous places wearing a mock tee shirt. It's too bad a place like this with a nice layout feels compelled to alienate their customers and side with such an old and archaic rule. My friend is black. I'm sure that had nothing to do with it.
We won't be back.
I'm sure Kaneff would not want this manager representing his course in Niagara if he knew this was happening. Amateur hour.
Nice course, well maintained, some really interesting holes.
Please do something about the geese, there’s goose poop everywhere.
Royal Niagara
Conditions of bunkers and tee boxes were atrocious; bunkers felt like water penalties
Never again
I won't be back, poor playing condition and a very rude starter! Tee boxes, fairways and fringe haven't been touched in days. Mark the starter was very rude, power tripping galore.
Rained out
We got 11 holes in before a severe thunderstorm came through. The course was nice but wet had to cart path only not a big deal but because I booked through golf now hot deal they would not issue me a rain check said I have to go through GolfNow. Kinda frustrating and GolfNow doesn’t make it easy to contact them
Good day for golf
Got there before our tee time and checked in. The starter gave us instructions and we were on our way to the first tee of the Old Canal course. It's been a while since l'm golfing here but there was a good deal on Golfnow to make it worth the 1 hour drive.
As I had said I've been here maybe 6 or 7 seven times but I never was able to play this particular 9 so I was glad we made It. Both the front and back nine courses were in great shape for this time of the year. The only negative thing was the greens had been aerated recently so your putts were bouncing a little at times but it was still a good golf day. Both my golf partner and I agreed that we should come back again, and that is top priority on our list without a doubt. I recommend this course to anyone who wants a top notch golf course to play. I'm sure you would be glad you did. The pro shop is at ground level for easy access.
