Royal Niagara Golf Club - Old Canal Course
About
The Old Canal Course is one of three nine-hole courses at the Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club. Situated between the scenic Niagara Escarpment and the Bruce Trail, the Old Canal Course is named after the historic 120-year-old Welland Canal that borders it. The challenging layout was designed to championship standards, employing several tricky elements including carefully sculpted fairways, rolling greens, and king-size bunkers. True to its name, the golf course features plenty of water throughout. There are several dramatically placed tees perched on the edges of the canal, providing stunning scenery that is unmatched in the Niagara region. All three courses at Royal Niagara Golf & Country Club were built to the same high standards, but each one offers a unique set of challenges.

Windy Experience
Most of the holes set up east/west and that day there was a strong wind directly out of the west. With the openness of the course, this made for a challenging test. Fairways, bunkers, rough all in great shape. Most greens difficult to putt the because of all the spike marks. Definitely will come back again when wind conditions are not so severe. I had a tuna sandwich at the turn; I've had better. It was dry & tasteless.
A good test of golf
After heavy rains course was still very playable. Club selection off the tee is key, lots of elevated greens to factor in, and once you get on, the sloping greens really make you think! Super friendly starter, and great value. Will definitely go back!
Great Course
You will love the challenge, layout and condition of this course. Great course to enjoy and worth the drive.
very challenging
Great course. I'm not a low handicapper so I found it very tough, but fair. A lot of strategically placed creeks and bunkers penalize you when you try to be aggressive but don't hit the perfect shot. Greens could have been better cared for, but they were fast with lots of breaks. Great deal on golfnow.
Poorly maintained greens
On any course the standard of the greens are what normally brings you back.however The greens were very poor, this was a combination of lack of Tlc by green staff combined with poor course eticate with the groups in front of us failing to repair pitch marks on the greens, thus causing the ball to change the direction of travel severlry on numerous occasions. So because of this unfortunately won't be back
I love playing this course
The course has 27 holes witch are very challenging ,some of the greens are pretty challenging.
Great course
This course offers 3 different 9 hole courses. We played old canal and iron bridge. Royal Niagara is well maintained and very scenic. Don't let the nice scenery distract you because it's definitely a challenging course. Considering the downpour of rain that happened the night before the course was rather wet but drains well and was playable. I will be playing this course again.
Great play on a dry day :)
Hard to fully rate this course as it rained horribly the night before and flooded much of the course and all the sand traps were full of water. However, on the whole it was a fun course to play.
Great value
Played early bird through golf now. Flew through the course. Great conditions and scenery, good challenge for every level of golfer with 5 tee sets. Lots of space between holes, too much to make it walkable, it's only downfall because I enjoy walking when I play but carts are mandatory at Royal.
Royal Niagra
played 2 different courses 9 holes each. Not sure if they had 18 holes on each but was not busy considering it was a Sunday morning.
Really Nice Course!!
We were shopping in the Outlet Mall and went afterwards for a round of golf. it is directly on the other side. Really nice location, friendly staff, friendly people playing there. My wife and me, both beginners, needed a little extra time. The fairways and greens were in a great condition. Love to play here again!
Great course
We really enjoyed the course, good sunny but windy day.the course is in very good condition,
Very challenging
Good Course For my Type of Golf
I played the Iron Bridge and Escarpment nines and as told by staff that the Iron Bridge if you play to the fairway you would be rewarded unfortunately i can't drive that way so no rewards the Escarpment course was good fairways were fair and nicely done. Greens were fast in good shape if I could putt my score would have been really good.
Great Golf Tough holes
Some greens were inconsistent fast vs slow, but all was in good shape. Iron bridge will test your confidence with some blind greens and landing areas off the tee!
Golf now wouldn't let me book the $25 hot deal the morning of which was kind of disappointing but...
great course for the dollar
all personal are very friendly, course plays tough from the blues and is a great challenge!
Great Pace!!! Challanging Course!
Great Staff, great day and great course! Took cart. Would have been tricky to walk as there are some holes that have a fair bit of distance between holes. No issues with cart.
You must experience this course
My friend and I played here for the second time, and we loved it. We will return again later in the fall, because the course is on the escarpment there are lots of trees, and that must make this one of the most beautiful destinations for fall golf anywhere. Thank you Royal Niagara
Just So So
The greens are not consistent - some slow, some fast. Only use the course as a last resort. Too many 'hunters' play this course, i.e., foursomes of men who absolutely MUST find that stray ball. Unless it is not busy, the play can be extremely slow.
Great Course - Enjoyed it
Enjoyed the course however the Ranger needs to know what's going on throughout the entire course. He told us to speed up because the people behind us were obviously complaining but there was no where to go because when we got to the next tee box there were already 4 waiting to tee off.
