Good weather, good friends, poor conditions
Have played at Rolling Hills Challenge course before, but not on a Monday, which we discovered meant the clubhouse bistro was closed and there was no beverage cart.
The course itself was extremely dry and therefore the ground was hard, as were the bunkers. It was even challenging to put the tees in the ground (whether playing from the whites or the reds).
There are some decent holes, but in a couple of spots had to wait for others to tee off on the next hole so as not to possibly hit players if we went long on the par 3 before it. Could do with better signage as to where the next hole is. Lots of times tee boxes for two different holes share the same patch of land. Probably won't play there again. The Classic or Bethesda Grange is likely better option.
Very hard fairways
I have played the Challenge course many, many times so this fact is not a surprise to me but it usually happens later in the season. The fairways were very dry and hard as there are no sprinklers on the fairways, they rely on mother nature. But the teeboxes and greens were very good and putting was true. The greens are however a little on the slow side. All in all a good round as I shot an 81 so fin was definitely had.
Always fun
Course is relatively cheap. But DRY! Always dry and no sand in bunkers. Either wet or hard as a rock. Fairways hard as a rock always. Depending on the day there isn’t any cart refreshments just a station in the middle of the course.
Staff always friendly and helpful. 4/10 overall course. If there is one thing it’s open and your scores will be low.
Excellent coursw
Course is well kept , value for money. This time around pace was very slow.Marshal should come around often to ensure the pace.
Great round of golf ⛳️
We enjoyed the course, it was beautiful and challenging. Thankfully there was a Marshall who helped move a slow group along.
Challenging Challenge
Course needs work on two areas in particular. A preponderance of dandelions throughout the rough and fairways (!). Sand bunkers need work/overhaul.
Majority of bunkers had standing water 3 days after last rainfall. Those that didn’t have water were filled with debris (leaves, branches, weeds), and/or hard packed.
These are long term issues.
Expensive for what you get
-fairways had A LOT of weeds and dandelions
-no first cut in between fairways and rough
-bunkers were completely unplayable. Looked more like swimming pools
No carts on rainy day
Golfed here on a day that had rained during the morning. We arrived to the course 15 min prior to our tee time. Upon arrival, we were told that we could not take carts onto the course due to rain and would have to walk. They said they had contacted some other tee times, but that they didn’t get around to calling us. There were 3 people in the pro shop and less than 5 cars in the parking lot. To save to say they had the capabilities to call us. At this point we had driven 40 min and wanted to play. We asked for a refund on the carts and they said they could only give us rain check on the carts.
Pretty disappointed in this experience and doubt we will be back.
