South Padre Island Golf Club - 18 Holes Course
About
This southernmost course in Texas, despite its name, is actually situated on the mainland in Port Isabel. Architects Chris Cole and Stephen Caplinger carved an outstanding layout out of the wild native Gulf coast vegetation, with several holes bordering the Laguna Madre. The club has hosted the Texas Senior Open and the South Texas PGA Southern Championship since its opening in 1997.
The design features wide fairways bordered by native yucca, mesquite, and cactus, and the windy conditions often make it challenging to keep it in the fairway. Errant shots will be lost for sure. Others that fail to find the fairway will bury in waste areas and deep rough.
For the most part, the longer holes seem to play more downwind, while the shorter ones play into the wind. The large greens are of championship quality. Three of them are multi-tiered.
No. 5 is the feature hole, a picturesque, 335-yard, par 4 with a tee shot that must carry the Laguna Madre into a sharp dogleg-right fairway. On the back, No. 11 is unique because of the giant mesquite tree that dominates the middle of the fairway. Hole 12 can be interesting: it's a short par 3 that is completely surrounded by water.
The facility has plans for slow expansion based on how quickly the residential lots are developed. A second 18-hole course is under construction, with three holes complete. Designed by Chris Cole and Jeff Potts, this layout will feature only par 3 and par 4 holes and play to 5,400 yards.
Getting there : The club is on Hwy 100 before you cross over the causeway onto the island of South Padre. Turn right on FM 520 and continue for 2.5 miles to the course.

More perks for the money.
For the $65.00 they charge they need more perks. Like GPS on the carts to make the round go fastermoney.. Course could be better shape for the
Windy Day on the Bay
Very quiet day on the course due to the cold temps and wind. We were able to get right out and breeze through 18 holes in little over 3 hours. Greens were in great shape for this time of year. Fairways were really dry, so they provided us with the additional Texas Roll. We were able to enjoy a discounted round due to using Golf Now. We will be back again this week to play. We also enjoyed our lunch at Divots Restuarant. The food and service were fantastic, and we all commented that we will come back out for dinner one night this week. Great golf course atmosphere along with a very courteous staff.
Fun layout, pace of play was just barely over 4 hours. Will return!
Great Courae
Very picturesque and playable. Rated off-courae amenities low because our 4 beers were $25. Felt that was a little steep!
wednesday golf is cumbersome:
if you tee off near noon there is always a shotgun in the afternoon. either the front is booked or the back 9. we arrived at the 10th and waited for three foursomes to tee off. otherwise the place is really good...the greens are outstanding for winter golf.
SPI golf
fun course and generous fairways. the greens were consistent and had moderate slope shape. just under 5 hour pace. will be playing it quite a bit over the next few weeks and expect pace will likely improve.
South pafrr
Bad management. Not enough carts for golfer while workers use golf carts for work. Three hour front nine and no better in back
Cart availability
They have several carts that are out of order resulting in tee off delays for afternoon play.
Other than that a pretty good course. Best in the area.
Fun Time at SPI
Enjoyed a lovely sunny afternoon playing golf with my wife and another couple. Everything was very good except for the waiting on a number of tee boxes.
Nice course
This is one of the best courses in the Texas valley area. Greens where in great shape. Could use some cart paths to save the wear on the fairways. Somewhat difficult because of the water hazards and the wind that blows regularly in the valley. If your off the the fairways you are in grass knee high.. Take plenty of balls if you are not a straight hitter.. No carts in the parking lot. Higher prices for the valley area.
Wow
So I went into this course thinking it was going to be a links course being right on the bay. It is definitely not that. Fun track. The day I played winds were 30 mph gusting to 40. So needless to say it was sporting. Everything about the course was in great condition tee to green. The pro shop was able to work me in earlier. The only minor issue was pace.
Good course
Good design - water comes into play on several holes. Unfortunately we had a 9:07 tee time, arrived early and were told our tee time was moved forward - we didn’t tee off until 9:45…the pace of play was miserable - 5 1/2 hours! Do not play on Thursday mornings - played two other times this week and pace was fine.
