Greenbrier Golf Club
About
Greenbrier dates back to the 1960s, when the Farm and Home Administration implemented a program to help rural communities create places for locals to play golf. The course survived for a while, but was shut down in the 1980s due to financial problems. After being bought at auction, the course has been gradually improved and sold again over the years.
Known for its well-conditioned greens, the 18-hole design features pretty central Texas scenery, wide fairways, and lakes, ponds, and creeks that impact play on 14 holes.
While the front nine is more of an open links-style track, the back nine has more doglegs, hills, water, and a real estate development that has made the course much tighter.
The back nine boasts two of the more challenging holes. No. 12 is a 529-yard par 5 that requires accuracy due to the creek crossing the fairway and another pond. Hole 14 is the feature hole with a creek in the fairway and a ditch toward the right. Your approach must clear trees in the middle of the fairway from around 160 yards out.
Getting there : From I-35, take Hwy. 317 west for 7 miles. Look for the signs to the course.

Great Course for Beginners
Greenbrier isn't a difficult course. There are a few water holes, no bunkers, a few trees to aid in fairway identification. Overall, the course is wide open and not too many concerns surrounding lost balls.
There is a practice green near hole #1. No chipping area. The greens are in pretty decent shape as are the tee boxes. Fairways are nice, green, and easy to play.
The driving range is your basic range with billboard style range markers. $5 buckets.
There is a public pool for dip after playing 18. The clubhouse/lounge is comfortable and the staff is very friendly and helpful.
I highly recommend for beginners and those coming back to the game.
Excellent Beginner Course
The staff is gracious and friendly.
This public course is wide open with just a few water holes and no bunkers. Trees are sparse but what trees do exists aid in identifying fairways. There are a few somewhat blind holes which adds to the challenge.
The driving range is very basic with yardage markers. A small practice green exists near the first hole. The course would benefit from bunker additions and a chipping practice area. A swimming pool on premises allows for a cool dip after playing 18.
I feel it is an ideal course for the beginner and someone wanting to work on their game basics without much in the way of distractions.
