Riviera Maya Golf Club - Championship Course

About
PGA Riviera Maya Golf Club has been ranked as one of the top five golf courses in Mexico. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the Championship Course winds through lush Mayan jungle. Natural lakes also dot the scenic landscape. Being so close to the ocean, wind definitely comes into play, especially on the tough par-3 second hole, which plays directly into the prevailing winds. If you are able to keep your shots in the fairway, you'll surely be rewarded with a good lie and a challenging, but fair approach. Jones carefully carved the golf course from the deepest part of a limestone quarry, spreading the fairways across treacherous jungle growth that is just waiting to swallow up errant shots. In addition to the championship layout, there is also an Executive Course that is one of the best nine-hole golf courses in the Rivera Maya.

Best around
The fairways and greens were what you would expect out of a PGA course. The greens were running a little slow but not horrible, they were in great condition. Tee time was a 1030 and there was a husband and wife that went off right before us. We finished the round in about 3 hours and 30 minutes. Pace of play was perfect. I golfed here, hard rock, and coyote while I was in Playa del Carmen and this is the only one I would recommend value for play. Hard Rock is a harder course, not in as good of shape, but it is all inclusive.
Worth the money
The course was is great shape. Greens were rolling a little slow for what I would think for it being the hot months but it is also the rainy season and did rain that night. Course layout was fun and challenging, with narrow fairways with the ball pretty much being lost in the trees or water if you miss pretty bad. It is a challenging course bur fair and fun. I would play it again without hesitation.
Beautiful greens that were fun even for a novice
We played the Par 3 9 hole last year and it was fun, but the 18 hole course was fantastic. We are novice players that just enjoy being outdoors and loosing balls! lol. This course was fun and absolutely gorgeous! We will be back soon!
Great Value
PGA Riviera Maya at Tulum Country Club was one of the lowest priced courses during our off-season trip. Despite the back nine undergoing a lot of repair, the course was great. The combination of course design, PGA status, and price made it an easy decision to play. I'd love to play it again next time we're in the region.
Fantastic course and staff
Great course and staff are exceptional. Pace is place is perfect and some challenging holes
Great value
This is a must play course. Bring your clubs and enjoy the layout.
Great course
Played one of the earliest tee times to beat the heat. Course was in perfect condition. Had a great time with some members who provided some much needed advice on a couple holes. Would play again for sure!
Jokes
Between this hilarious website and the golf course you cancelled my tee time during my honey moon. Would recommend anyone to use this website or book a tee time at this golf course. Straight Neanderthalism
Great layout, good condition, very challenging
Reception in pro shop very good young lady spelled out process. Rentals were ok wish I had a choice in putter. Range was good with chipping green, would have been nice t access sooner. Starter was good. Course was outstanding both layout and challenge. We played from whites certainly all we could handle stretch of 7 thru 10 very tough stretch. As well as last four holes. 17 is a great hole into wind.. enjoyed it pace was just under 5 hours too slow, conditions were very good. Expensive but a good test.
Wilfy
Very challenging! Great experience because of memeber joined our group.
We were fortunate to have one of the members join our twosome. On the very first tee he warned us about the potential dangers of poisonus snakes, reptiles and spiders. He gave us instructions how to be careful at the edge of the jungle if looking for our golf ball. It would have been nice for the staff to warn us.
Slow play, Rude staff.
I have played this course about 10 times and one feature is the very slow play. Part of the reason is that the course is long, there is no roll, and even slightly errant shots are gone (they should start everyone on back nine). However, they let out fivesomes, and many golfers are playing their one round for the year. A golfer in the group in front of us was laying 6, still not on the green, and it was the par 3 second hole.
On that same second hole, after we waited for two groups to tee off, when we finally were on the green, a Marshall came out and chastised us for slow play. Luckily, the cart girl told them it was groups in front of us (BTW-he only approached the women, not the men to chastise).
By the fourth hole, according to the gps, we were 23 minutes behind pace. One group ahead of us then dropped out and suddenly the pace returned to normal. At the turn, we were still 23 minutes behind, meaning that we were playing on pace, but had not sped up. Nobody was pushing us. The starter came out and told us we needed to skip the hole because we were playing slow. This was the first time anyone said anything since the 2nd hole. I refused, but my wife, totally humiliated, forced me to skip. Ironically, when we got to the 11th, we had to wait on the tee box. The Marshall then followed us for the next three holes, not at a discrete distance, but right up on us. On the 12th hole he told us to play from the Ladies Tees. ( I was not having a great round but broke 95 for the day. 11.2 hdcp.) I told him to leave us alone or give us our money back and we would gladly leave. He finally left. We finished 14 minutes behind pace on the round.
This was the second round we played this trip. The first took 5:10. Ironically, on Christmas Eve we played and had a completely open course for the front nine. Played in 1:52, but we kept getting messages that we were holding up play. However, at the turn, we suddenly had a fivesome inserted in front of us and the back took 2:40.
As for course conditions, drives would often plug despite no rain for the 4 days prior, and greens were very inconsistent. Greens need to be cut and rolled daily, but some were “hairy”.
BTW-If wondering why we kept playing there, we had bought a 3 round package.
By far the best and most picturesque golf course near Tulum
My partner and I are based in Seattle, US. But spend the winter months in Tulum, MX.
If you are staying in Tulum, this is a must play.
