About
The little-known Henry Ransom turned this from a mineral lake into a 6,727-yard, par 72 layout in 1962. His tight design slinks through the tree-line fairways-it's tough because of the numerous water hazards on the bayou, which house friendly alligators.
Hole 7 doglegs right over 400 yards and involves a risky approach over the bayou. The opener on the back is another long par 4 (410 yards) that doglegs left and requires a long, accurate approach to the green.
Getting there : From I-10 east in Beaumont, find the Lufkin sign (Hwys. 96, 287, and 69), and drive north. Take Hwy. 105 west about 8 miles and the course is on the right.

Great layout pasture golf
The good: The counter help was very nice and accommodating, and pace of play and the course layout were good, as well.
The bad: The greens, fairways, and tee boxes on this older course were a mixture of grass types, and mostly NOT Bermuda grass. The greens were bumpy and inconsistent as a result, making it pointless to anticipate the breaks in the greens.
This is a good practice course for the price, but if playing competitively I'd recommend agreeing in advance to a two putt max.
Proper planning…..
….prevents poor performance. Tee time for noon and we had to wait for a cart to start our round, behind a group of 5 where only 3 were playing (one was in a cart with NO clubs just to ride along). Greens were full of weeds and weren’t maintained well. Pace of play was not kept up by groups ahead of us, and there were some patrons who clearly did not understand the intricacies of golf etiquette (repairing ball marks, letting faster play through, etc…). There were families out for what seemed like joy rides while one or two played, music blaring from carts, and young children running around on fairways and tee boxes.
Idylwild isn’t near the course it used to be. I’m not sure if ownership has changed hands, but when we played years ago, we would’ve ranked it as one of the top in SETX area.
