Player at Lyman Orchards Golf Club
About
Lyman Orchards is a popular Connecticut destination most known for the nearly 100 varieties of pick-your-own fruit but it also offers two championship 18-hole golf courses and a nine-hole course. One of the longer courses was designed by Gary Player and the other by Robert Trent Jones. Lyman Orchards' Player Course is a seemingly mild 6,600 yards from the tips but don't let the yardage fool you, this layout is a tough but fair test. There are over 30 bunkers strategically placed along the small greens and deciduous trees and beautiful white pines line the fairways. Routed through the orchards across gently rolling hills, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The terrain provides the course with plenty of ups and downs, as well as great views, especially on the 11th and 13th holes.

Very nice challenging course
When we got there it had just stopped raining, so we were restricted to the cart paths, (No fun). due to the heavy amounts of rain in the past weeks the roughs were very high from not being cut. We would definitely play here again when the weather gets better and things dry out
Interesting course
Not your cookie-cutter course. Interesting layout; some technically challenging holes, but playing from red tees avoided some of the ravines.
Thank you radler16 for playing and for your comments. The Player can definately be challenging, but much easier your second time out, come see us again soon!
Out of the Snow
Good time at Spring training for the upcoming New England golf season.
Thanks Hatfeildhellions for playing! Come and see us again soon.
Best Fall conditions in CT
What a fantasitc Fall day when you can enjoy golfing without getting frustrated finding your ball in leaves. This course was in great shape, fairways were cleared of leaves and staff was friendly and courteous. Course is both challenging and enjoyable. Look forward to playing there again.
Nice course, however, has suffered from slow play this season.
I thought the conditions were in pretty good. During the summer the greens were spotty and far less pristine than usual, probably related to the early heat wave this summer. Unfortunately, Lyman has been plagued with slow play this year, this was my first round on a weekend under 5 hours. This is unacceptable for a nice course in my opinion.
Hood value.
Played as a 3 some from the Blues. The course had leaf blowers out earlier and it really was truly advantageous since the leaves had started falling. No probem finding balls, fairway or rough.. A Ranger saw us on 6 and asked about speed of pay, we informed him the group in front were a bit slow ( there was a hole+ open in front of them). The Ranger had us play through them on 10 . They finished 45+ minutes later. Course was in good shape but the greens were SLOW..
( as opposed to practice green which was lightning).
Great value, good course.
Very challenging course, need to have local knowledge on a few holes. Overall a very good experience, will definitely be back.
Player course is target golf with interesting layouts
At the beginning of the season, the greens were not in the best condition. I always enjoy the layout and they have IMPROVED the greens by seasons end.. Would play again and recommend to friends
Play only if you're going to play it again
Overall the course was in decent shape but as first time playing the Players course, the layout was overly complicated on 8-9 holes for us to just go out and hit some balls. . I recommend it if you plan on coming back, but not if you're just looking to try a new course.
The greens were all over the map...some were decent. 7-8 needed serious tlc.
The Jones course is much better and well worth the extra few bucks.
Course is challenging with some blinds holes and good doglegs. Knowledge of course layout is very helpful. Only a few holes require a drivers.
Great views from the back nine and great to play in fall colors.
Nice course, good views, plan your shots
This is a well maintained course that has a few holes that wind through apple orchards (snacks in the fall). The fairways are fairly narrow and some of the approaches are blind. It certainly makes for an interesting round of golf. Word of warning.. if this is your first time playing the course, check a hole layout or a GPS for the drives. There are a couple of holes where a drive will go through the fairway into nastiness and it's not obvious from the tee box.
Great layout, nice mix of tough enough but playable fun
Greensides & fringes in poor shape, some greens with grass damages, fairways very nice, some areas seem to be perrenially damaged and left that way. Attention to detail required to make the Player course a cut above. All employees we encountered were superb.
Greens need work
The overall layout of the course is challenging, we played the blue tees. There is a lot of elevation change to deal with throughout the entire course, the par 3's are long but most of them are downhill so it offsets some of the distance. The greens were in poor shape, there were alot of dirt patches on every green due to prior standing water and they were very slow. These were probably the worst greens i've played on all year. I will not be back anytime soon.
Strange layout and the greens need some help
Overall Lyman Orchards is a nice facility, but the Gary Player designed course is a strange bird. Lots of blind tee and approach shots, long carries and target golf on awkwardly designed holes. It's like they tried to force a golf course onto a piece of land that may not be suited for it. Also, maybe it was because it's mid-August, but the greens were in really bad shape, as were some of the fairways. Big, burned out dirt patches on the majority of the greens. It wasn't a bad experience overall, but not a course I would look to play again.
Worst greens I've played on in years!!!
I just played in a 2 day event at Lyman. First day was played on the Jones course. I knew we were in trouble when I went to the practice green and it felt like I was putting on a fairway. Grass was high, speed was super slow (like you would find on a low priced, poorly maintained par 3 course), surface was bumpy and irregular, unable to put a putt on line and expect it to stay there. I was shocked based on what I'd heard. Once we got to the first green I knew it wasn't just the practice green that was awful. It was all of them throughout the course. The second day we played the "renowned" Player course. For some reason, I had high hopes of better greens, but again I was gravely disappointed. The greens were even worse. Not only were they long, slow and untrue...there were huge bare spots all over many of them so that now your putt would go from long grass to dirt and back to long grass again. If I were the greenskeeper at this place, I would be embarrassed to show my face. Personally, great golf courses in my area are a dime a dozen, and for me I make the final judgment by the quality of the greens which is where the scoring is done. That being said, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone unless they're letting you go out for free. What a waste of the $140 it cost me to play in this event. At least I've learned my lesson. The only thing I'll be going to Lyman Orchards for in the future is a fresh baked pie......never for golf. What a shame.....
Great Hot Deal! Challenging Course
This course has many blind shots and changes in elevation. Having had played this course once before helped with club selection and avoiding the trouble. The value of the deal far outweighed some course condition issues that surprised me for this facility. Some greens and fringes were in tough shape. There were some bunkers that need to have rocks removed. Overall, enjoyed the challenge of this course and couldn't beat the value!
Dissappointed, the greens were diseased.
I played lyman Orchards-The Player course over a dozen times in the 2012 season. The course was always in excellent condition and very fun to play. However, during my first round this season 13', I was very dissapointed to find the all of the greens on the player course to be diseased. They starter informed me they are doing soil testing to find out what the problem is, but they are in bad shape. Other than that, the tee boxes are starting to become chewed up too. The course has started down a dangerous path and i hope they can recover it. Maybe the new apple 9 course they opened up is taking away from their maintenance of the other courses. They pace of play was also terrible. We teed off in the afternoon, and there was a group 2 holes in front of us with 2 open holes in front of them. There was no ranger to be found on the course. We ended up skipping 2 holes to jump in front of the other groups.
Excellent value but don't walk it.
Since this was the first time we played this course it proved to be very challenging. Overall conditions were very good. The fairways are in excellent playing condition. Several of the greens were not in as good others and we had a few rather bouncy putts but the majority were very good and rolled true. This course is wonderful value for the money. I would strongly recommend using a cart as some of the distances between one green and the next tee box are rather daunting and take several minutes by cart. The staff were very helpful from the moment we pulled into the parking lot from bag drop off to providing valuable insight into some of the courses more challenging holes. If you've never experienced the Player course at Lyman I would highly recommend you do so.
Beautiful course but needs some attention
The course was beautiful. It has an interesting hole layout and is very peaceful. The only thing I would say is it needs some improvement on the greens. I know it is because we have had nothing but rain here in CT, but when putting the ball, it would bounce and move unexpectedly. Other than that it was a great course, and I played this course before where it was in pristine condition. I would definitely play this course again.
