Bunker practice, White Sands National Monument Photo submitted by DYakimec on 03/01/2019
Windy
Day was terrible windy. Green on 13 impossible to hold. Greens were hard and dry. It’s the price we pay in the spring wind around here. Lol
Pricing Not Consistent
Was charged $14 more than my reservation on GolfNow. Pro shop attendant wasn’t properly trained on computer system or how to accurately charge prices.
Red Hawk Soars- Positive Outcome
I drove over two hours to play this course and was glad that I did. The course was in excellent condition for the most part, especially considering the time of year! The greens were fantastic! Fast, but fair. Fairway grass was a tad long, but again, better than I would have expected.
The practice facilities- chipping & putting greens- were excellent. I didn't go to the range, but it was plenty busy and I assume was as top-notch as everything else.
The golf carts have bluetooth charging, were clean, and in good shape. They didn't have GPS, which would be the only amenity that would have improved them.
The staff, both inside and outside, were terrific! Friendly, welcoming and eager to assist. I had a blackened chicken wrap with fries and an IPA brew for lunch, and all were outstanding!
I paired up with Jordan (14) and his uncle (who was only along for the drive) and it was a delightful experience from start to finish. You simply cannot go wrong at Red Hawk! It was a very pleasant re-entry to the game after not having been very active the past few years! I'll go back and hopefully be able to get some photos next time.
Very disappointed this time.
Love Red Hawk. My favorite course in Las Cruces. Sadly, this time they decided to put a “club championship” match play twosome out in front of my group. In the middle of the day. With a ridiculous send off of phony applause. The “champions” couldn’t hit much beyond the overly long tees they were playing from. Our group was held up for hours. We finally bailed on this fiasco on the 15th hole, at well over 3.5 hours, after 3 or 4 carts of “spectators” squeezed in front of us. I would hope this type of spectacle is sent off very early I the the morning from now on, so as not to impact paid, normal play.
Critique
Greens were in great condition, slick and challenging!
Bunkers have been upgraded but still need some fresh sand.
A few of the fairways in rough condition but most very playable and look like they’re getting better.
Staff is very very welcoming! My favorite public course in the area.
A 4.5. Wish golf now had more review tiers
Solid course that could still improve itself to elite level. Varied tee boxes. Yes. Fairways could be more lush. Ample not tight fairways width. Area around green decent and grass fairly consistent in order to chip well. Greens fast and true. Biggest issue was greens crew put majority of pins on crowned area for difficult putting.
Cost is TOO high
Charging private course fees of $70.00 for a course that does not maintain bunkers, has no dress code, pick up your own cart etc is too high. Rates continue to increase at this course without measurable improvements. Staff is young (very nice) but the course management need maturity and guidance.
Crazy rolling hills course
We played with great folks. The course is much more difficult then it’s rated, rolling hills everywhere with greens surrounded by massive sand traps. Wind also makes it challenging.
Tough Course
It’s a very challenging golf course. Hard greens. A bit frustrating at times but I had a great time.
Beautiful Difficult and Long
This course has so many different things about it that are awesome if you like a challenge.
If you like the wildlife aspect of golf then this place will almost always offer sightings of families of quail, red hawks, snakes, maybe even a wildcat.
This is the longest course in Cruces so it requires some pretty gutsy shots out there at times. The grass is well kept and the greens are the most well kept in town consistently.
Lots of bunkers that like to attract any ball close and my only negative is towards the amount of rocks in the trap, can be muddy and just how impossible it is to expect consistent sand underneath 1/2 inch.
