Top 10 Virginia Public Course
From the drive into the course you know it is going to be a special round. Course has a wonderful layout that flows well over the rolling terrain.
Course has a modern bunkering and greens and everything is big and bold! Must play for any golfer.
Tough course
Championship caliber golf course. Played the back tees with never having played the course and it was a test, demanding tee shots on just about every hole. My only grip is that every hole is demanding, no let up. 238 yard par 3 over water seems a bit much. Overall, however, great conditions and a true gem of a piece of property. Wow! A bit pricey, but worth the cash a few times a year. Give it a shot.
Poor Condition for the foreseeable future
Have played this course many times in the past ten plus years. Over the last five years it has fallen further and further into poor condition. There appears to be a resurgence of owner money into the course and a plan to raise membership at the same time. This is a wonderful layout, design as well as a beautiful location. It has always been remote and challenged to grow into a first class golf venue.
Today when we played, we were very disappointed at the coast ( $96) which was rediculous for the condition. There are multiple construction projects going on all over the course. The bunkers are almost all still unplayable ( but sand is on the property). The fairways are mediocre at best ! Greens punched and poor.
I question the long term plan to raise membership while charging almost 100 dollars in the mean time while striving to achieve this goal. I will not play again or until it is rebuilt to a first class course
Beautiful and Scenic, A Must Play
Had a wonderful playing this course, in fact went back two-days later and played it again. Course conditions were very good, greens putted well, bunkers are very marginal at best. Aside from the bunkers,, everything was great!
The Golf Shop is very unique, a historical building in itself.
Best value in VA
Best track in VA for the price. Extremely great layout, you won't find any better. Course needs some work, but we played after 2 weeks of monsoon rains so it could be expected.
We love to play this course. After the first three holes you can kind of get in a grove to play. No. 3 is the biggest challenge for anyone I dare say.
Hidden Gem
This is a beautifully designed course. In great shape other then some bunkers.
Well worth the trip out to Amherst
Best course in central Va
This is the best course in centrai Va ,tough course, great layout,in awesome shape, with 4 sets of tees it adjust for every type of player,
Great layout, poor conditions
Poplar Grove has a fantastic layout, reminiscent of Royal New Kent with lots of elevation change and doglegs where you're not quite sure how far to hit it. Royal New Kent, however, offers yardage books (or GPS at other courses) so you know what to do. Poplar Grove leaves you guessing.
Another similarity between the courses is that you can't put an extreme layout in the middle of no where. Both courses suffer from a lack of qualified greenskeepers and maintenance staff that are essential to keeping a course like this playable, as you just can't find people in the sticks. The greens at Poplar Grove were shaggy and inconsistent, while the bunkers had multiple types of sand and tons of grass growing in them. None looked like they had ever been maintained by anyone other than the stray unlucky golfer who found one.
The lack of staff isn't just on the maintenance end. When I played early on a Sunday afternoon, the course had one person to run the pro shop, the "restaurant," and the carts. I didn't see any other person over the next five hours who had anything to do with running the course.
It's too bad that the course is apparently only able to stay open by hiring a single person, as there is so much potential here. As it is, I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to play here.
This is a GEM!
The drive is worth it and it is a great value. Play all day with cart, lunch and range balls for $50?!
The good: One of the funnest and most beautiful layouts you will play in the state. Lots of tees dramatically change the challenge of the course. The bent grass fairways and greens are gorgeous and in great shape. I played at The Greenbrier last week and in my opinion these greens and fairways were better. Greens are true and fast. Nice bent grass range has a large hitting area. Not crowded at all and pace of play is great. Staff is very friendly.
The Not so Good: Cool old house serves as the clubhouse but tiny pro shop and a very small bathroom. They do have a small kitchen with rather good sandwiches and friendly service but it is not fancy. Bunkers are fair but not nearly the pristine conditions of the fairways and greens. Location is not ideal but is definitely worth the drive.
If you are in the central Virginia area you should check this course out! It is a gem.
Very impressed!
I moved to the area recently and finally got out to play this course, and it is very impressive. The layout and scenery around the course is awesome. Bent tees, fairways and greens were in absolutely great condition. Some very cool and memorable holes out here. Definitely a challenge depending on the tees you play. As another reviewer mentioned the bunkers were not pristine like the fairways and greens but it did not bother me. For such a great course the value here is unbelievable! If you were to plop this course anywhere near a large metropolitan area, there is no way I could afford it.
The golf shop/clubhouse seems to be a very old farmhouse which gives it a nice character but it is small. Staff was very friendly.
Having played professionally for a bit, I have been on some of the best in the country. This is not the same level, but close. I am thrilled to have a course like this so close to home.
Diamond in the middle of Nowhere
This is a course you want to play. In excellent shape all over, greens, fairways, tee boxes were perfect. The only very minor issue I have is the bunkers, sand is not consistent throughout the course, although not bad it was not up to the same conditions as the Grass.. I don't feel this is a detriment to playing the course and I will go again. Price and what was included is better then any course in my Area.
Beautiful Course
We teed off at 3:30PM and got a deal deal. The course has matured a lot since I first played it in 2009. There is character in each and every hole, and the scenery is beautiful. In an area with more golf traffic, you couldn't get on a course like this for under $75. Definitely worth the drive from Lynchburg!
A great Rees Jones Design
if you have played the Green Course at The golden Horseshoe in Williamsburg you will see many of Rees's design traits in this course as well. Generous landing areas on the par 4's and 5's, doglegs, short and long holes. Demanding par 4's. A very nice course in very good shape. A must play in the Richmond-Williamsburg area.
A tournament quality course you wouldn't expect in this area.
This was the last course Sam Snead designed before he passed away. As you drive through the country road that leads there, you will be amazed at the beauty of the course when you drive up. Worth it just to ride around the course as you play. With the GolfNow deal I got 18 cost me the same as 9 holes at a raggedy municipal course we play.
Such a great course. Will play again.
Best course in Central Virginia. The course is beautiful and in great shape. Will play again for sure.
poplar grove golf course
very nice course. fairways are perfect .course is hard but fair.
all the staff are great. little cook makes her own chicken salad which is great. great way to spend 4 hours and have a great time.
Poplar Grove
Course was in pretty good shape, have played it before it better conditions. This is probably due to the aeration that was done on about half the greens. Overall it was a great experience and I would recommend this course to anyone if you get the right price. We played for $20 a piece with a hot deal on golf now. If you never have played here before I would recommend a GPS to find your way because it is pretty far off the beaten path.
Great course if you can get a deal
The GOOD: excellent greens. You are rewarded for accuracy and punished for hitting in the rough which was moderately high on 8/25/13. A little too high around the greens. The course makes you think about almost every tee shot and approach. The carts worked well. The food was good.
The BAD: location... out in Amherst is a bit of a drive. Also, it would have been nice for the scorecard or the sign at each hole to give you some indication about the hole layout.
OVERALL: great course/ deal for the $30 pp HOT DEAL on golf now. Any more and I would consider just staying around Lynchburg to play....
