Indian Springs Golf Club in Middlefield has been owned and operated by the same family since it first opened in 1964. With a terrain of rolling, tree-covered hills, the course is as scenic as it is fun to play. The nine-hole layout is player friendly enough to appeal to players of all skill levels and there is an alternate set of tees to play an 18-hole round. Though many of the fairways are wide and forgiving, there are a few tricky blind shots that will test your accuracy. The par-5 second hole is one of the most memorable. It leads you uphill before plummeting downhill to a green protected by three sand traps. Indian Springs Golf Club's second par 5, the tree-lined fifth hole, is also notably tricky. The fairway edges along mature forests, leading to a sharp dogleg right downhill to the green, which is surrounded by trees.

Gorgeous course. Hidden CT Gem

Indian Springs is an absolutely gorgeous course. I think it probably gets over looked because it is a 9 hole course but it is in perfect condition. The tee boxes were incredible, fairways, perfectly cut and the greens were immaculate. It is a fairly easy course, but with a few tricky par 5's and some swale and slopped fairways, it makes for a nice couple of hours on the course. I will definitely be back to play more!

Nice little course

This was a fun course to play. The difficulty comes from the fact that it is located in a very hilly area, almost every fairway results in a side hill lie of some sort. The fairways and greens were in very good condition. The greens are quick and are on the harder side to read. Overall I would play this course again now that I have some local knowledge!

Good Spot

Love walking 9 here.

If it was an 18 hole track, might be a little much on the legs but with it only be 9 it works perfect.

9 hole well maintained course that’s challenging

Indian Springs is a hidden gem that’s close to Lyman Orchards. The golf course is in top condition and is superior to most public golf courses. There was a dedicated person filling in divots with a soil and seed mix. Very rarely to you see this at top dollar golf courses. The scenery up top of hill is beautiful. The course is very challenging and affordable too. There’s a restaurant that’s serves food and beverages with a deck that overlooks the course.

Elevating Course in the Hills

The Springs benefits from its strong location: five holes are set upon a massive hill, the rest on lower terrain, yet terrain that still rolls enough to create interest and difficulty around both fairways and green sites. As such, no hole here is a boring one, as these fairways climb hills and tumble down them for better entertainment value than that on more typical nine-hole golf courses. The course even starts with what plays like, for the most part, a classic British road hole, especially given that one side of its fairway–the right–is the safer side and the easier one from which to play the approach. On the other hand, the concluding ninth is par-4 whose tee shot, staightaway and far more open, is made from a very tall hill.

The holes are also good-looking, and that serves to complement the way they play through a fine shot variety. On the first three holes, for example, the preferred shot shapes of the tee are draw, fade, and then–well, your choice. On the first, fifth and ninth, slamming a hard drive is often advantageous, but on the fourth, sixth, and eight, staying out of trouble or setting up a good angle of approach into the greens are bigger priorities. Approach shots play up and downhill, to plateau greens or, otherwise, to tricky greens set at the base of downslopes, best exemplified at the fourth and fifth. One par–3 plays uphill, the other down. No two par-4s are similar, and the drives and approaches on the pair of par-5s couldn’t be more different.

Difficulty? The course’s slope rating appears to be about average at 116 (white tees), and certainly the length from even the blues falls a shade under 3,000 yards, yet statistics can be deceptive. I would call it moderate, but there’s a sneaky-tough aspect to the fairway angles here and, more importantly, the greens in general, that demand some acquired course knowledge from those who expect to shoot their intended score. A few of the holes feel a bit fussy, but the balance is nearly beyond reproach.

All in all, it’s a solid package, well complimented by the good service around the clubhouse, along with the close attention paid to course conditioning–which is typically excellent. Today the tees, fairways, bunkers, greens and greenside areas were all in fine shape overall. The greens certainly roll as smoothly and fast as at any course I’ve played so far this year.

In central Connecticut, this should be a preferred destination for anyone who wants a quick yet challenging nine.

Fun course

Good shape for the most part and a good challenge. Fairways were hard and the greens could have used a sweeping, but I don’t blame the course. It hasn’t rained in over two weeks and it was really windy. Overall course is maintained well layout was fun and I would recommend it.

Pleasant Spring Round

Fast greens, sloping fairways, tricky doglegs, and lots of elevation changes–The Springs offers plenty to contend with over its feisty nine holes.

Challenging Greens:

It is this course’s greens, though, that may add what seem to be unnecessary strokes to your card. They roll and tilt and tumble so much that two-putting anywhere outside of twenty-five feet will be testing. The first green, as one example, slopes strongly from back-to-front, but it also tilts more subtly from side-to-side, making for a complex surface where reading the breaks becomes something of an art. And the other eight greens have no let-up.

Brutal Five-Pars:

Unless you hit the ball invariably straight and to the right spots, the par-fives will play hard. The second, whose fairway traverses a massive, hump-backed hill, demands a precise drive to set up a second shot from a relatively flat lie–usually from the fairway’s right side. At the fifth, by contrast, your tee shot mainly needs to find the left-to-right tilting fairway. But the second shot, which will turn the corner of a dogleg, might be the toughest one you’ll have all day, and the third, typically hit from the crest of a hill and plummeting to a far-below green, is almost equally demanding.

The Compensations:

Fortunately, I can’t bemoan nearly all of the rest here: this track plays relatively short (I hit all wedges into the par-4 greens from the blues), the fairways are wide enough, bunkering is not overdone, and the chipping areas won’t tax your short game heavily.

Conditioning:

As usual, they’re on top of it here. Even though it’s early spring and the growing season has just begun, the fairways and greens, roughs and greenside roughs, tees and bunkers were all in at least decent shape. If anything stood out, though, it was the greens.

Conclusions:

–If all aspects of your game are in working order, you can still score well at The Springs. But those who regularly putt the ball well on these surfaces are, in my book, genuine experts.

–The course consistently displayed terrific views on this warm, early-spring afternoon.
