Not up to standards
pro shop is just an old trailer. Bthrooms are portable tiolets. No beverage cart present. Many bunkers have been allowed to grow over with grass Little sand in remaining traps. Greens in so/so condition. Could be a good layout if some attention was give to restoring the traps and improving the greens.
Good Value
A nice course in an area of the island where there are not many options for public golf. Layout was good, conditions were not as pristine as the pricier courses, but good value. Pace of play on front nine was terrible. A group of local teenagers who were wild and clearly new to golf made it slow. Luckily for us they only played nine holes. It was neat to hear the volcano rock crunch under your feet in the rough. No amenities to speak of. Working out of a trailer, but several good food options in nearby Volcano Village
Mountain Golf in Hawaii!
Fun track, friendly staff, and a great course. For having been covered with cinder because of recent eruptions, the course played well. The greens had been sanded and aeratred, but still ran fine. Overall, well worth the drive and time to play!
Pace of play was fantastic
I teed off at 10am. Drove over from Kona and the drive alone is worth the time! Greens were a little beat up from winter. I was told they grow lush in the summer. Played 18 holes in under 3 hours.
Challenging course and fabulous views. Staff was super.
Very cool views
The views are amazing. The course is very well laid out and fun to play. The greens are slow but that’s okay if you know it ahead of time.
A favorite place
Volcano golf club, music, favorite of mine and my wife. We live in Texas and love to come to Volcano golf club A couple of times a year. we live in a small rural town and love the small world feel of volcano. When Troon took over the course they made some major improvements, including new carts that have added greatly to The experience. My understanding is Troon is no longer involved, but the course seems to be maintaining its good condition. This is a hidden gem on The Big Island!
Nice course for the price
The course is laid out nicely. The greens are very puttable some seasons better than others depending on rain and draught. Watch the weather. Don't get rain insurance offered on golfnow as it doesn't work. It poured rain and they said it didn't. Ha ha. Oh well. But for a municipal type course it's fun.
Locals course in mediocre condition
If you're in the area and want to play it's the only game in town. The putting green was pretty much unputtable and the real greens weren't much better. Fairways were hard to discern from the rough. Just wasn't in very good shape. Do not drive out of your way to play this course. Regular price is $80 I believe and that's ridiculous.
Decent locals course
Nice enough layout. Conditions were OK, tight to bare lies with God knows what for fairway grass.
Greens were slow and bumpy. Probably as bad as I have played. But you know what? We were playing golf in Hawaii so how bad can it be? Got a good price on Golfnow, would have been unhappy with the $82 rack rate.
It's ok if your in the Hilo area but wouldn't travel far to play it.
What a little treasure
Make sure you adjust your yardage. It feels like playing in Utah or Colorado. The staff was great and what a bargain compared to all the beach courses.
