Nettle Creek

About
Nettle Creek Golf Course in Morris, Ill. offers one of the most unique golfing experiences in southwest Chicagoland. The course has a links-style layout set in a beautiful prairie environment abundant with wildlife, a non-traditional setting for links golf. The championship layout features generous fairways and large, undulating greens flanked with cavernous, free-slowing sand traps. You won't find many trees on Nettle Creek's rolling terrain but colorful wildflowers and native grasses frame all of the holes. In addition to several strategically placed bunkers, water comes into play frequently in the form of ponds and wetlands. There are ample risk-reward opportunities that will test your shot-making skills. You may find that you have to use every club in your bag. The golf course has some challenging holes but it's still forgiving enough for players of any skill level to enjoy.

Limited Public Play at "The Creek" now that Morris CC owns the course
Very much enjoyed my afternoon at The Creek. Course is in wonderful shape and very well kept now that it's been privately owned for over two years with limited (and very caring) play. Will definitely return prior to seasons end. Thanks to all at Morris CC for their hospitality.
MORRIS CC now owns - Clubhouse Fire on 4/2/19
FYI
https://abc7chicago.com/clubhouse-at-nettle-creek-country-club-destroyed-by-fire/5230415/
Clubhouse destroyed. Morris Country Club bought the operations at end of last season. Morris CC website says that Nettle will be open the public on weekends and holidays. Hope they get the track up and running at some point however the course is not worth more that say $40. And why it's closed to John Q. Public on weekdays is interesting to say the least?
Great layout
Very challenging and well laid out course. Good value course. No Water on course.in 90 degree heat..,,,
Slightly Above Average
Booked a “Hot Deal” time for $40. Course was challenging due to the prairie like rough surrounding almost all fairways. Any shot that missed the fairway was almost an automatic penalty. Course was dry, but haven’t had much rain lately. Nevertheless, the course could have used some additional maintenance. The worst part was there was no beverage cart on a Sunday morning/afternoon. Would go back, but wouldn’t want to pay more than $30.
Very slow play
2 groups in front of of were very slow. Not sure if ranger pushed them or not. Waited almost on every shot.
Hidden gem
Very scenic course, well kept. Good value for a country course. Greens played fast even after heavy rain two days prior. Look forward to playing there again.
Short par 4's
Course was crowded around my twosome's hot deal tee time. A sixsome started off in front of us. After a couple holes they let us play through. They were moving quicker than the two guys ahead of them. Fortunately we jumped ahead of them at the turn and enjoyed no issues with pace on the back 9. The course was in good shape overall. If you like a course with a lot of shorter par 4's this is your place. Bar inside is also nice for after round beverages.
Solid
Course is in ok shape....lots of goose crap everywhere and the bunkers are as little sketchy but greens are always good and the old guys never let a 2some play through so we had to skip a hole so the 2 4somes in front of us would notice how slow they were playing. Back 9 had a water main break on 17 so almost got the cart stuck until it was to late. Lunch was very good!
Nice pleasant track
Experienced the opposite of the prevailing south westerly fan (easterlies blowing 10 to 15mph with a cold twinge to them). This toughened up Nettle to play extremely long - especially the 6th thru 8th and 16/17 stretches. Course was in decent shape and what you'd expect for the horrible early spring weather Chicagoland has experienced to start this season. None of the grass as grown a lick. Nettle has a functional clubhouse with restaurant/bar, no lockers or showers but does have a decent grass range to warm up on. It's a nice routing the traps were maintained okay and the greens were a tad bumpy were cut and rolled....just okay. Fairways okay but the rough is really hit and miss with some bare patches and hard pan....the ball always seems to roll out more in the rough areas at this course versus the roll out in the fairways. A decent routing...pleasant place out in the corn fields touring a McMansion housing development and thankfully a decent setback from them. The 2nd hole is a monster of stupid - and when the course is crowded pretty much guarantees that pace will be crawl until you get further out on the course. The par 35 back nine is fairly easy but the 16th/17th holes will challenge the best of golfers. Blue tees weren't set up or marked but that didn't deter 3 foursomes yammering away in front of us who had no business playing the tips to somewhat slow play this day. The white tees at 6129 were set way back and the easterlies made this place play well over 6600 yards. Course does have yellow senior tees at 5307 but those are basically set up as back ladies tees...the course should strongly consider making the yellow tees more of composite with a yardage of 5800 or so. All in all a tad over 3 stars and a course I don't mind at all playing a couple of times a season.....good value and definitely worth the drive if you haven't played here.
Very nice course, great value!
Nice layout, course in great shape, greens well manicured & pleasantly fast. Play 3-4 times a year & will most definitely continue to!!!! Highly recommended.
Almost Perfect!
Except for the 2nd hole this is our perfect course - wide fairways, not a lot of trouble in the rough or elevation changes, and huge greens.
The course was in immaculate condition, almost PGA-tournament-ready, to the point that a staff member once came behind us to stamp down ballmarks (not ours, mind you).
The layout (except the 2nd hole) fit our style of play, the fairways rolled forever and the greens were the most readable we'd played in a long while.
About the 2nd hole, just read the other reviews and get an idea of its notoriety as one of the hardest in the area.
We thouroughly enjoyed our time and truly hope to get the chance to play here again.
Morris Country Course
Course is always in great condition, driving range available and restaurant on site. The 2nd hole can be a challenge for some. Therefore, it would be helpful to have a designated drop zone. However, this has not kept us from coming back as other holes tend to be more forgiving.
If you're near why not go?
It was a long drive for me. And once I arrived I was skeptical. But the course starts with character and plays really well except for the sand traps. The traps were holding water or rock hard and could not be played. I loved that I used every one of my clubs. And loved that I wasn't always pulling the same clubs at the tee and then beyond. The value for my round was great. The hot deal was more than worth it. If you are near this course it would be silly not to try it.
A little effort
A little effort could go a long way at this course. I've played here 3 times this year. There is never a starter on the 1st tee so you get multiple two somes teeing off by themselves. There is never a ranger or anyone else to ask them to pair up to speed up play. The tee boxes on the par 3s are beat up pretty bad. There's a lot of dirt areas and weed patches along the cart path that just looks bad. It's just not well maintained. I guess they're pocketing a lot of cash because they're definitely not putting any money back into the course. Too bad cuz it's a fun layout.
Favorite local course
I love the back 9 on this course. (I hate 2 because it blows up my score at times but that's not their fault.). The course is quiet and well maintained. The greens are a bit faster than most courses in the area but they are fair and roll well. Some well placed bunkers and creeks. Prices are good. Right now they do $25 Monday's. The range is the only downfall. The range balls are old and the markers are not very accurate the machine doesn't always work.
Give it a try, you'll like it.
