Golf Advisor: Top Courses in Kansas (2024 #10)
Reviews
El Dorado
For the $10 we paid it was great. The front was in bad condition and the back was great.
Has improved in recent years
I last played this course a couple of years ago and wasn't at all impressed with the front nine. The front, which is the original course and about half a century older than the back, was not in great shape wasn't much fun to play.
After a couple of years, however, they've brought that nine up to par with the back to make a complete 18 hole experience that is much better than before.
A couple of greens were a little rough but they were running a consistent speed.
Overall, unless you are getting a good discount on Golfnow (we were) it might not be worth passing up other area courses (I'd rank Sand Creek and Hesston ahead of it, and probably Quail Ridge as well, though I haven't played there in years so can't attest to it's current state.) It is a nice change of pace and, with the improved conditions, somewhere I'll be heading back to as long as I can find good deals on tee times.
One more note: Despite incredible weather, the course wasn't busy at all and had a great rate of play. Although we had booked 18 holes we were really only expecting to get in 9-12 due to only having less than three hours to play, but we got through 15 holes in that time.
This course has terrible greens
All the front nine greens, including #10 were in nearly unplayable condition. All the greens, with the exception of a few on the back nine (newer addition) were tiny with too much elevation to hold a good shot. Flag sticks were all 4' tall with tiny flags making it very difficult to spot from the fairways. Overall I would not recommend this course to anyone except maybe beginners.
Pleasantly surprised.
I wasn't expecting much, but found a pretty nice course for the money. Fairways and tee boxes are in great ship, although some of the greens were patchy and need attention.
Fine course, excellent greens
Excellent variety of holes, greens are challenging and well maintained. Superior clubhouse and lounge. The course is intrigueing enough fo frequent play.
Course has seen better days
Played here for the first time in a couple years, unfortunately the course has seen better days. There is a stretch of holes on the back 9 in very good shape (use to be front 9 but they have switched the front and back), the rest of the coarse is in poor shape. The fairways are ok, the rough is patches of weeds but primarily rock hard dirt and many of the greens are in poor shape. I hate to leave negative comments but this coarse is not worth the trip.

NOT AVERAGE OR BEGINNER GOLFER FRIENDLY
You better be able to hit the ball straight all the time. If you happen to get out of the fairway, and you will, first of all good luck finding the ball and if you do good luck getting a club on it. Between the wide variety of weeds and native grass, knee to chest high, it is not a course of any natural beauty. It appears as though they want slow play or extremely skilled players only. I was told they lost the greens on the front side this summer with all the rain and they still have little grass and algae/fungus problem on the greens. It could be a nice course for groups like ours to travel to and play on a regular basis. I believe the overall vision of the people making the decisions need to be thinking of the bigger picture rather than whomever maybe advising them.
