It's not often I put a divot in the green, but I took the complimentary tool and low and behold I needed it! Photo submitted by O2GrampaThom on 10/05/2019
Enjoyable Experience
Came out the Hillside w a buddy for the day. We were greeted by the staff and shown our golf cart. Initial impression from the clubhouse was that the course was wide open and very playable for any level. That assumption quickly changed once we entered the wooded area where fairway became very tight and a solid shot was clearly needed to stay within par. We played from the blues and then the whites to complete 18 on this 9 hole. Lunch was pleasant as they have an outdoor Tiki bar that serves up a wonderful array of entrees, apps, and salads. Beer selection was excellent as was the wine and spirits. We would gladly return to Hillside for a fun day or evening out.
Good Course
This course was a bit narrow and provided a good challenge. It's a bit dry now due to lack of rain. Would play it again.
I can see the potential
A lot has been said about the fairways being dug up, rough patches, bare spots all due to the new irrigation system, they are mostly true. Some of the fairways still show the scares of the system. Now that the system is installed I would suggest actually turning it on to water the course. The tee boxes would be next on the 'to do list'. However if you decide to play from the blues, the tee boxes are in much better shape.
Those are the only two items to work on and when they are completed this venue will be on most golfers play list. The amenities such as the pool, restaurant and Tiki bar are above average. Great prices and service. If your favorite hole is the 19th, then this is a place to visit. The best for last. The greens. Consistent speed, smooth and the slope can present many challenges. No issue with lack of watering. Everyone in the group praised the greens. The potential is there for this course. I will be back to play again.
Good for the money
Greens were nice , fairways were in fair shape. It was good for the money. I would play it again.
Worth the Hot Deal
Played this course on saturday twice for 10 dollars with a cart. Can't really beat that deal. I had seen a lot of reviews about the course being torn-up and in bad shape, and although i did see where they had done all the digging for the irrigation system, it seems most of it has now been fix/covered. That said, the course can be a little condensed. That was my issue with it. Most holes you play, you'll hear other people's shots land near you. and when you get to hole 7,8 and 9, the fairways are all together and there's nothing dividing them. So it's hard to really see where you are going, and lots of shots were getting crossed over from other holes. LOL... that said, you can't beat the 10 bucks haha. just have fun with it, i did. PS. TOP NOTCH GREENS by the way, best feature of the course, consistent speed.
Great bargain
This course has 3 very challeging holes to start... unless you can hit it straight it is very difficult. The tiki bar and amenities are top notch... private club type of stuff... the course is what it is... great greensure fairways and roughs beat up in areas if this was a 18 hole course I would play it all the time..
Don't miss the live music thur-sunday
good&bad
the greens are very good and are challenging, the fairways are in bad shape bare ground rocky not well mowed, need more maintainence! the outdoor bar is very good and service was excellent
One of the better under-the-radar courses in the area
This course has undergone a lot of changes recently and you can tell they're working hard on making it a good, solid course. They're on their way. The staff is excellent and they have fun, creative ways to make it an entertaining place to come back to over and over again.
The course is rolling, fairly short, but provides enough of a challenge to keep me coming back multiple times. It's a great practice course for me (I'm a 12 handicap). The tee boxes need work, and recently installed irrigation has led to a few rough patches, but the greens are mostly fair and there's plenty to think about - long or short? Aggressive or conservative? Until recently, the course was missing yardage markers which made things a bit more difficult, but they've amended this. A friendly ranger doesn't do the best job of keeping pace of play moving, but he's out there at least, and he's a nice guy.
The food at the outdoor tiki bar is EXCELLENT, though the bartenders could be a bit more attentive.
This course is still working out a few kinks, but I'm a fan. I hope they keep moving in a positive direction.
Rough Rider fairways
First, I'm from the west coast of Florida and came up here to Dighton, Ma to visit. Just wanted to swing the clubs before playing with friends at other courses in the area. Now about the course it self. I have to be honest, the greens were in excellent shape as good as the get any where in Florida. The fairway's need a lot of work. The club house is very nice, and the club house food was great. Menu prices were very fair. I just hope the can improve the course in the future.
Under maintained Municipal course
The clubhouse and staff were friendly and overall the place looks great driving in. The course layout is mostly woods with fairly straight holes. The greens were average, and sand bunkers were a mix of a decent layer of sand and various rocks. While there was a distinguishing line between the fairway and rough, the rough had better ground to play off of, as the course was covered with dead grass, torn up ground, and was overall poorly maintained. The amount of divots / poor ground conditions make this course almost unplayable, even for experienced ball strikers, with many "fairways" being at least 50% dirt. Tee boxes hadn't been cut in a while and were anything but level. For the price I paid, there are many options in the eastern RI / southcoast MA with 2-3x the course conditions, as overall this is a under maintained municipal course.
Under construction should be closed till done
First off I paid $10 with a cart as a hot deal on golf now which was a great deal because if I paid anymore I'd be very angry. I show up, the guy at the shop was very nice and helpful. The problem is I'm not sure if they are putting in an all new irrigation system but the fairways are destroyed. Literally 20 yards wide in the middle of every fairway. How can you have golfers play on a course in that condition?? Also they didn't even say anything. The green were is good condition and that's the only thing it has going for it. I will never be playing this course again
Fun And challenging
I have been playing this course almost a year now. i got a membership in the early part of last season. they just fixed the irrigation so there are some parts along the sides of holes (not much in play) where the grass is dug up/dirt. in the past weeks it has grown back a lot i expect this season for the conditions to become much better. greens are another story, they are my favorite that i have ever played. they are not painfully fast like the nearby road island country club but they are perfect .tee boxes are mostly avg some are a little rough . lastly, the layout is one of my favorite. as a regular (i golf multi times a week here) i have learned many tricks to beat the course. my secrets such as where to play the ball and what trees to hit over make the course easy if your game is on. if you are having a off day you might spend more on more golf balls than the green fee. overall fun and good course for the money. be warned its a tough walk with the steep hills the facilities for food and there pool is fantastic, better than rhode island country club by a lot and is much much cheaper.
Great Course
Second round we booked here. First was during 30+ mph wind gusts the Saturday before. Both rounds were outstanding for the beginning of April.
Great value, great round.
Just trying to line up the next round.....and hopefully getting better each time.
New irrigation
Once the grass starts to grow and it's watered I believe the course will really improve
poor condition
this course is in terrible shape. the tee boxes are mostly dirt with a few patches of grass. I would not recommend this course to anyone.
It's barely golf
The course seemed to be fit into land between ledge and hills the tees were mostly dirt the fairways were anywhere that wasn't woods I have never written a review before but I feel compelled to let other golfers know I'm. 7 handicap I left the course after third hole and was kindly given a refund shop staff was friendly and understanding. Beware
Jack's Review
Hillside is my home course for my High School team. The course overall has changed. The conditions have been great lately. Lots of hills which makes it difficult.
