Lake Doster Golf Club
About
Lake Doster Golf Club in Plainwell is ranked as one of the top 25 golf courses in Michigan. The layout has undulating greens and watered fairways that will test even the most experienced golfers. The course is home to the affectionately nicknamed "Little Monster," its third hole, which boasts a reputation as the toughest par 3 in the state. This infamous hole features a tee that sits high above a treacherous green that is surrounded on three sides by water and even further protected with three sand traps. The hole is also completely isolated thanks to the surrounding mature trees. There is another par 3 on the golf course that is almost as equally tough, the 15th. There is a pond to the right that is seemingly out of play but it's still intimidating enough to push you too far left, risking a landing in the sand trap.

Always under maintenance
Course was in rough shape and every bunker was closed
Course has Potential
The layout is beautiful, but sand traps need fresh sand. You don't want to hit out of them as they have lots of stones :(
The fairways are pretty nice. Some Greens are nice, but some are very patchy :(
The scenery and peacefulness is amazing.
It is worth the $25 for 9 holes w/cart on GolfNow. Hopefully, the community and others can help put this course back on the map for many golfers.
The Doster
Course is well kept except for holes 6 and 7 are using a fake green at the end of the fairway to help the original greens be resurfaced (original greens look fine) . Offer $5 off or notify golfers at check-in
still playing on temp greens on holes 6 & 7. saw the repairs to old greens, looked good they cut them for the first time since repairs. Excellent work by the staff on the mending of the greens.
nice course layout
Course has nice layout. Greens were a touch slow and bunkers were in rough shape. Staff was friendly. This is a nice course. For the price really nice. If they sped up the greens and a little bunker work this would be a very tough course.
Used to be a great course
Was a great course, but is going through a period of neglect.
The course is challenging but fair.
The course was fun to play. An accurate tee shot can lead to scoring opportunities. Some of the greens were in rough shape. Two holes had temp greens in play. They did not mention that when we checked in.
Only real negative was pace of play. There was a “sixsome” playing ahead of us, 2 adults and 4 kids. They caused a back-up that stretched over at least 4 holes. Also right behind them were 2 couples that were obviously not golfers. Males wearing Jean shorts and no shirts.
Hills for days!
First time here, but what a nice layout! This course uses elevation changes on every single hole to make some very nice challenges. That said, there were very few blind tee shots, and you mostly got what you saw. Course was in good to great shape for its age and, while cart paths were deteriorated from age, the greens and fairways were well kept and quite playable.
Rough condition
Clover all over in the rough. Bunker sand hard and more like top soil.
I found out halfway through the front nine that they have 4 temporary greens. No mentioned this when I checked in. If they would have told me, I would have not played.
I drove 15 hours from Georgia to visit relatives and play nice courses in Michigan. I would not put this one under the category for a nice course.
Sunny day at Lake Doster
West Michigan is having a drought currently. The drought impacted course conditions, and irrigation looked to be struggling to keep up. We didn’t think this would impact us, but it made locating our ball difficult at times, as everything appeared very “bright / white / yellow / brown”. Also negatively impacting our ability to locate out ball was clover its white flowers. Someone also drove the course and had dropped marshmallows, which was cute at first, but by the 18th hole had grown old.
Due to the drought, things were dry and dusty.
Carts were gas powered, and wife is pregnant, so we weren’t thrilled with the fumes. It was a faster golf cart that seemed noisier / jerky - overpowered for the job. Cart was a little dirty and could have been washed down.
Some of the greens had clover outbreaks and weird patterns / dry spots - but mowed short. There was vandalism on 2 of the holes, which resulted in temporary tees.
The course is a little expensive for the conditions.
We played at 2PM and it was quite busy during checkin and at the bar.
Despite this, there are some fun and interesting holes. I could see someone potentially staying here to golf in West Michigan. It’s somewhat close to US-131 and looks to have a lot of rentals.
