Lake Doster Golf Club
About
Lake Doster Golf Club in Plainwell is ranked as one of the top 25 golf courses in Michigan. The layout has undulating greens and watered fairways that will test even the most experienced golfers. The course is home to the affectionately nicknamed "Little Monster," its third hole, which boasts a reputation as the toughest par 3 in the state. This infamous hole features a tee that sits high above a treacherous green that is surrounded on three sides by water and even further protected with three sand traps. The hole is also completely isolated thanks to the surrounding mature trees. There is another par 3 on the golf course that is almost as equally tough, the 15th. There is a pond to the right that is seemingly out of play but it's still intimidating enough to push you too far left, risking a landing in the sand trap.

Afternoon golf
Nice round of golf on a sunny fall day. Pace was good. Course in average shape. Greens and fairways good. Rough in some areas very dry and hard. Sand traps are a mess, though they are replacing all of them. Cart paths are in need of major repair in some areas. The course is somewhat challenging .
No golf
Booked tee time on-line but never played. Got to the course and they had a tournament going on. Pushed my tee time back by almost 25 minutes because they were slow. Would have took me three hours to play the front nine. Wish I would have known about the tournament.
Slow Back 9
Booked 7:33am Tee time to get out early and get done before it got hot, had other obligations for the day. When we made the turn, we found out that the course let out 8 foursomes in front of us for some kind of outing. Would have been nice to know before hand, we would have chose a different course.
Sunny Golf
Nice round of golf on a nice sunny day. Pace of play good, though not a lot of golfers. Course conditions seem to be getting better. Still have issues with sand traps, and no ball washers at all. Trash containers were all filled.
Getting Better
The course is looking better, and the only thing impacting the condition of the course is that the sand traps are out of commission. It looks like they are going to fix all of them, though it is going real slow. Pace was good.
Back after 40 years.
Fun, challenging layout. Traps were under repair which wasn’t a big deal. For the most part the coarse is in good shape. No GPS was the only complaint. Enjoyable round.
Could be better
Other than the sand traps(awful conditions), and lack of ball washers the round was fine. Greens and fairways pretty good. Played it years ago, and it was in much better shape. Owners have let a nice track slide. The good thing is that between 9 and 4 is no one there. Played by myself in 2 1/2 hours.
Sand traps were in horrible condition - unplayable.
The price isn’t worth it
All the bunkers weren’t taken care of, huge rocks and or overgrown with grass.
Greens are rough but that’s due to people not fixing their divots.
Hole 3, you play from mats and that’s really disappointing because it could be an awesome hole.
Fairways are long.
Could be an amazing course but the overall maintenance is crap and for the price it’s just not worth it.
Could be a 5 star with a few more details
Clubhouse staff was nice. Full bar, but I think they only had hot dogs, candy and chips to eat.
Carts were average, no GPS or club washer
The course layout was a great gander through the wooded area... I really enjoyed it.
They did have a beverage cart, who we saw twice over 18 holes which was nice.
The grass and greens were good, but the bunkers were awful... muddy type sand and hole 10 bunker had chunks of grass from the edges thrown in there.
There weren't ball washers on many of the holes.
Overall this was a really fun experience.
We paid $57 for 18, which is on the higher end for a course in this condition.
Disappointed
I played 18 on Saturday they had 2 foursomes in front of ne and did not want me to play through. There was no one on the course enforcing rules so it took nearly 6 1/2 hours for me to play a team by myself. The layout of the course has huge potential it’s challenging scenic, but the course itself is terrible shape the fairways the greens and the bunkers which I was told were out of commission and they were a free drop, not worth Worth the $50 I paid to play. Staff was friendly not too much of a pro shop their courses in the area that are a lot nicer condition and a lot cheaper to play but again the course has a lot of potential. It’s just not up kept for whatever reason.
Such Promise, but Squandered Potential
Could be a championship course, but a lack of basics and actual care of the course are just painful. Missing ball washers, lack of any water in the ones that exist, dirt mounds in the Bunkers where plants are growing... hard to justify the money for the value. Tough course and great layout, all things considering.
Sand trapped
They were working on the sand traps, that part was evident. The problem was they started the project last year based on all the weed growth and lack of attentiveness that was quite obvious. The track of the course is nice and it’s otherwise well maintained.
Needs some work
Overall, an above average course for the Kalamazoo area. There are a few holes that need some work, one hole actually has a beat up range mat in the tee box. Sand traps haven’t been taken care of in some time and were either full of water or weeds over grown. It was much nicer when I went a few years ago. For over $50 a round I expected a bit more from this course.
