Great golf course, well maintained and very challenging
Our foursome had a great time and will go back again, great course and great deal
Great location, terrible conditions
Greens were nice but slow (cut long). Tee box were shoddy and lacked grass. I can't see how they justify charging as much as they do. We paid $25 and frankly this place was only worth $10-15 tops.
Send Your Kids to the Zoo, Then Play Golf
Surprise, surprise..In the middle of the Detroit Zoo is a little gem of a golf course. Very well cared for with great greens you can count on to hold your approach shot.
The front six are a little distracted by the freeway they run paarellel to, but it is a minor disturbance compared to the playing a well laid out course with some nice 500 yard Par fives. I'll be back....
Nice jewel in the metro area.
This was the first time playing in about 10 years and will be back as soon as possible. An enjoyable and fun course to play. Course is in good shape and some of the features, long grass areas, add really nice character to the course. Staff was friendly and cordial and willing to give you help if needed. Would recommend to anyone, to go and play Rackham.
Great Course For The Money
Beautiful Course, Lots Of Big Mature Trees. Very well maintained greens. Only downfall was the back nine was a little long for women with two 180 yard par 3's and a super long par 5.
Nice course, phenomenal deal
Myself and a buddy of mine played this course with a cart for only $28 for the both of us (I also found a coupon online). Incredible deal at a pretty nice, dry course... avoid all that sand!
the course bunkers were not raked due to player laziness
the first three holes were kind of easy because of freeway construction. the next 15 were very challenging. I played the back tees, and the old Donald ross was a real challenge to this 67 yr. old! I did manage to just break 80. I really enjoyed the old course.
A true gem
Great staff. Wonderful layout and well maintained greens. A real pleasure to play. A true gem as well as moderately priced.
Very good course
Rackham is a great course, offers a mix of holes and challenges, as there are no natural hazards to speak of, the course architect uses over 90 bunkers to guard the course as well as undulating greens unique to a course not "up north". If you haven't played here, be forewarned tee times are set every 8 minutes and a typical round is always over 4 hours. In addition, I have never seen a course where so many golfers who really shouldn't play the back tees play them which also slows play. If you know all this up front will be a slow, but enjoyable round.
Nice course
This is one of Donald Ross's earlier designs. For anyone who doesn't know, Ross was born in Scottland and apprenticed under Old Tom Morris. Old Tom is regarded as the father of golf and is the guy that Golfnow has adopted as their antiquated "mascot," i.e. the bearded guy pictured above with the chicken who likes to say "go play" with a Scottish accent in the TV commercials. Ross is in the golf course architect hall of fame and also designed Oakland Hills CC, Franklin CC, Birmingham CC and many others in the area and accross the nation.
I like this course. While it's relatively flat and short, the doglegs and complicated green complexes will keep you on your toes. There are long grass/heather zones that when hit will more likely than not swallow your ball and make it nearly impossible to find. There's little to no water though, and the deep rough is limited, so lost balls are infrequent for a high-handicapper.
The course has a no alchohol policy that was apparently a stipulation instituted when the Rackham family deeded the property to Detroit. Rumor has it that the family is trying to take the land back into its posession, who knows.
Overall I like this course and with the GN discounts, the value is very good for what you get. Recommended.
Still playable after all the years
Played at 8:15 on a Thursday and it was busy and slow. The front took 2:30. We teed off about 8 minutes late (not bad). The greens were a bit slower than what I had done last week on some Boyne course. I estimate a stimp reading of just under 9.0
The course has several doglegs but they are at fair distances and there is no mystery as to what you need to do. I like to play here once or twice per year. I play three times weekly.
They need a beverage cart and two more porta- potties. Ladies and guys with prostate issues be ware.
Course was in pretty good shape. Greens rolled nice, a bit slow.

Packed course and slow pace
This course can be chaotic at times. I went during the week early morning and there was no starter on the first hole. Groups had no idea what order to tee off on and there was 4 different groups on the first par 5 hole. Extremely slow pace in the beginning but it began to open up later on in the day but still extremely slow pace. The hole layout is not the best where tee boxes are set right next to the previous hole's green making it a bit uneasy to tee off. The course is decently maintained although the grass is not cut evenly especially in the rough making for unfavorable lies. Friendly staff behind the desk but greens crew could careless if you are about to take your next shot. They continued to cut grass in the fairway with no respect for the oncoming groups. They even were cutting just off the green while I was putting at times. I will not be going back to this course, I would rather pay the extra money to play at a nicer course.
Loved it, great location course!
A very good course, challenging and long. No water!! I enjoy playing there often.
nice, old style course
enjoyable, nice layout, wide open for stray shots, greens well maintained
Great greens
Wonderful place to play. Donald Ross design, hidden gem for sure.
Convenient Location!
Booked this course for fathers day...my dad really likes playing here...I figured it would play slow because it was fathers day, but was really surprised that there was really no waiting on any hole!...I was a little disappointed that there was no beverage cart on the course....also was a little bit disappointed in the condition of the course...seemed a bit run down since last I played there...anyway, I really like the convenient location, and lets face it...if Dad likes it...what else matters!
Great mix of holes
Very enjoyable. Holes are close together so need to be careful of players on other holes.
Tough Greens
Greens were a little slow, but rolling, tough pin placements. Very challenging. Course was in good condition. Nice staff.
