Used to play this course 20n years ago.
The course was not what I would consider good shape.
The grass on the greens was long and made putting hard because of how hard you had to hit the ball. The course has not changed a whole lot in the last 20 years except that the trees are bigger and taller.
The bad thing is the course was packed and there was no starter at the first tee box to control tee off times or any ranger on the course to keep people moving.
The pace of play was slow and there was a group several groups in front of us that was holding back a group of five women who were playing in front of us. It seems like a lot of retired older people playing and walking the course...slowly.
Lots of Water, No Real Hills
Rum River Hills Golf Club is at least partially well described in its name. The Rum River does border part of the course, but one might have a hard time finding any real hills on the property. Designed by Joel Goldstrand, features of the course include his characteristic undulating fairways and forced carries over water on several holes. Indeed, water comes into play on at least twelve holes, either bordering the fairway or near the green. The hazards are the only real opportunity to lose a ball, as the rest of the course is fairly wide open and the rough between fairways is not terribly high. I was very impressed by the greens. They were smooth and rolled true, and were almost totally devoid of unrepaired ball marks. Either the patrons are well schooled in course etiquette or the grounds crew spends a lot time with divot tools. Regardless, they were a refreshing change from the greens at many public courses in the Twin Cities area. My only complaint is that they were fairly slow and it took several holes to make the appropriate adjustment with the putter. The course is not very long, only 6,308 yards from the tips, and not very difficult. Less skilled players may be challenged by the forced carries to several greens, but more experienced golfers won't have a problem. Rum River Hills is moderately priced and has special rates for seniors. It's worth giving it a try.
Tough call - Early in the year
I'd have to go back in July/August to give a completely fair review, but here it goes:
The course was relatively simple, and I had very little issues scoring.
The fairways were in brutal shape, in my opinion beyond "normal" winter wear. However, the greens seemed to be in impeccable shape.
All around I wasn't that impressed, but would consider going back if I found a discounted rate online.
Good Time, Great Value
Awesome weather, great staff, and challenging enough for an amateur player. Awesome value with Golf Now!!!!
Course in need of a major overhaul
Course was in rough shape. With the exception of holes 9 to 12, the course was in terrible shape. On hole number 7 there were people on the bar balcony heckling people while they were putting. Very rude and distracting. Also the course has a tricky layout. Plays much shorter than the yardage.
Poor conditions and horrible pace of play....
I went at 8:42 am on a Wednesday and we had a group of hooligans in front of us that was just the worst. They would each hit atleast 2 tee shots after dribbling their fist time and time again. I was there until almost 12 and just barely got through the back 9. The course itself was also in just awful condition......discolored fairways and just very poorly treated grass throughout the course....I paid to play 18 and ended up leaving after 9......very disappointed to say the least......
Challenging Layout
Lots of water, sand, tight pin placements on challenging but receptive greens. Some water hazards were dry but otherwise course was well kept.
In much better shape
I've played the course a lot and today was the best I had seen it. It was very green with smooth greens and fairways that you could actually hit off of. Much improved. 18 is still a super tough driving hole for a short par 5. I hope you can hit a long cut shot.
Friendly Staff
Maybe the nicest pro shop starter I've ever had dealings with. The beverage cart lady was also very friendly. It was a great day for golf so it moved slower then normal because it was busy.
Still disappointing
I had not played here in years but found that some of the same problems from years ago still have not been fixed. They haven't fixed the drainage problems on many holes and it's like playing on a big. They punched the greens the week before but didn't tell us when booking the time and the putts bounced all over. Still disappointing.
short but challenging
Not a very long course but lots of water so there are challenges . I played early so the pace was good. I finished in 4hrs.
rum river
I enjoyed the course. This was my first time playing this course. I was disappointed in finding the greens had been punched. It did not appear that they had been top-dressed which made putting more difficult. I would certainly come back and play the course at a another time. I thought that the risk/reward factor was challenging. Over-all I enjoyed the round. The only reason I gave it a 3 was the condition of the greens. I know that they have to be aerated, just wish I had known ahead of time.
poor conditions
Greens were so slow. It is hard to believe that the greens have to be that long when we got rain.
Fairways have tons of divots. Was better off in the rough then be penalized for a good drive,.
great food
