Decent Course
I have not played this course for over 13 years. Was pleasantly surprised to see it in decent shape after all this time. It has a few gimmick holes..but overall a decent track to play.
Course conditions need help
Being retired I have the opportunity to play all over the twin cities and Rum River Hills is by far in the worse condition I have played. Years ago Rum River was our go-to course because of course conditions and layout. Regretfully I can no longer say that. Obviously the layout is the same however course conditions are very poor mainly the ruff. Dead grass from cutting wet is left on the ruff which apparently is not cut that often, in many places the ruff looks like it was cut with a weed wacker. The greens are in OK condition but if rolled would be better. The fairways were OK but that is as good as I can give it. This course just needs a lot of TLC.
Great course, poor staffing
Course was in good condition but the course ranger was a megalo-micro manager. Course gets a C due to ranger alone. Not only did all players have to check in with him personally because "only one person paid"... duh... it's the golf now app... but he also tried to "help us out" and have us tee off from the whites when we were intending to play the Blues because "this first hole is difficult and there's a lot of water out there"... say what?!
Needs work
Computer system down so they just told everyone to just go
Started everyobe on back 9. Sprinklers on 10th green were on and grounds crew doing maintenance on many of back nine holes. Mowing front 9 as well.
One hole crew was in fairways as we were trying to play.
No water or beverage cart No beverages in pro shop
Meh
Not impressed. Too many dog legs and very crammed together. Pace of play was terrible. They allowed way too many people on the course and every tee box was backed up. Wasn't run very well
good value
Enjoyable early-season round. The course which can be wet in places was in excellent condition for the time of year.
RRH is a decent track and a good value. Course is fairly challenging, especially if you don't hit it straight. Water comes into play on many holes. If you looking for a average golf course that is easy to get on, RRH is a good option. They also have an excellent men's club and ladies league.
golfed in november
went out with a buddy at about 10 am
a little bit wet but ok
temps in the 50's
course was in good shape considering wetness
Great Layout Great Conditions
My wife & I played this course and we were very pleased with the layout & conditions. We had read some earlier reviews before we booked our tee time and were a bit concerned, but after we got there and played a few holes, we were very pleased. The course was quite wet after a few days of rain, but the maintenance crew was busy getting the fairways mowed and the greens were great - very smooth & true. There were no issues with the fairways or the greens as listed in other reviews (I'm not sure where they were playing). The course has a good mix of holes and the flow of the course is very nice. The back nine is very picturesque and has some very good hole designs. Pro shop was nice & we got a couple of good deals on 50% off shirts. This is a great deal especially if you are able to use a Golfnow Hot Deal.
Buyer beware
Booked through golf now for a set price and when arriving at course charged a different price, starter said they go by their website not golf now. As for the course fairways are like the rough at most courses, same with the tee boxes. Greens in good shape and at least there was a food and drink cart driving around. Will not return!
mow the greens
mow the greens and the fairways otherwise love playing here
Used to play this course 20n years ago.
The course was not what I would consider good shape.
The grass on the greens was long and made putting hard because of how hard you had to hit the ball. The course has not changed a whole lot in the last 20 years except that the trees are bigger and taller.
The bad thing is the course was packed and there was no starter at the first tee box to control tee off times or any ranger on the course to keep people moving.
The pace of play was slow and there was a group several groups in front of us that was holding back a group of five women who were playing in front of us. It seems like a lot of retired older people playing and walking the course...slowly.
Lots of Water, No Real Hills
Rum River Hills Golf Club is at least partially well described in its name. The Rum River does border part of the course, but one might have a hard time finding any real hills on the property. Designed by Joel Goldstrand, features of the course include his characteristic undulating fairways and forced carries over water on several holes. Indeed, water comes into play on at least twelve holes, either bordering the fairway or near the green. The hazards are the only real opportunity to lose a ball, as the rest of the course is fairly wide open and the rough between fairways is not terribly high. I was very impressed by the greens. They were smooth and rolled true, and were almost totally devoid of unrepaired ball marks. Either the patrons are well schooled in course etiquette or the grounds crew spends a lot time with divot tools. Regardless, they were a refreshing change from the greens at many public courses in the Twin Cities area. My only complaint is that they were fairly slow and it took several holes to make the appropriate adjustment with the putter. The course is not very long, only 6,308 yards from the tips, and not very difficult. Less skilled players may be challenged by the forced carries to several greens, but more experienced golfers won't have a problem. Rum River Hills is moderately priced and has special rates for seniors. It's worth giving it a try.
Tough call - Early in the year
I'd have to go back in July/August to give a completely fair review, but here it goes:
The course was relatively simple, and I had very little issues scoring.
The fairways were in brutal shape, in my opinion beyond "normal" winter wear. However, the greens seemed to be in impeccable shape.
All around I wasn't that impressed, but would consider going back if I found a discounted rate online.
Good Time, Great Value
Awesome weather, great staff, and challenging enough for an amateur player. Awesome value with Golf Now!!!!
Course in need of a major overhaul
Course was in rough shape. With the exception of holes 9 to 12, the course was in terrible shape. On hole number 7 there were people on the bar balcony heckling people while they were putting. Very rude and distracting. Also the course has a tricky layout. Plays much shorter than the yardage.
