Overlooked Gem in St. Cloud
Wapicada Golf Club is an overlooked gem of a course located just east of St. Cloud, Minnesota. This parkland-style course has fairly tight fairways lined with mature oaks and other trees, and greens that are surprisingly fast. Putting downhill on most of the greens is an adventure, and more than one putt from our foursome ended up off the green. The course is fairly tight in terms of fairways being adjacent to each other, and on several holes the proximity of greens to the following tee boxes leaves golfers in jeopardy of errant approach shots. The course is not overly long, 6,610 yards from the tips and 6,269 from the middle (white) tees. Most of the holes are fairly straight, and there are only two holes that I would call true doglegs. Nevertheless, the layout of the holes combined with forced carries and well-placed fairway bunkers makes this an interesting and fun course to play. Only one of our foursome had played the course before, and the others agreed that they would be happy to come out here again. Among the more interesting holes is the 9th, a 409 yard (from the middle tees) par 4. As seniors playing from the white tees, we all found ourselves about 190 to 200 yards from the pin after our drives. Unfortunately, our approach shots from downhill lies had to carry a water hazard. All but one of us chose to lay up, and all of us were happy with bogey. A hole that golfers will either love or hate is the 12th, a 371 yard par 4. The problem here is the mature oak tree that is almost in the middle of the fairway about 170 yards out. Three of our foursome chose to avoid the tree and ended up in the rough, which is just high enough to make you pay close attention to the lie before choosing a club. One challenged the tree, which caught the ball and left him with a second shot of about 205 yards to the green. Golfers from the Twin Cities may not want to drive to St. Cloud just to play Wapicada. But if you're going up to Brainerd or farther north, it would be a great place to stop and play this course on the way up North or heading back.
Exceeded expectations
Very nice course. Forces you to hit them straight, and holes are not on top of each other. Every area was in great shape, rough sand fairways, greens etc. would recommend and play again. Even had a cart gal on a Monday afternoon.
Beautiful challenging course.
This course is very well maintained. Greens are quick and true. I recommend this course to anyone who hasn't had a chance to play it yet. Not for beginners.
Outstanding greens!!
You won't find many places, even private clubs, that can compete with these greens. Some of the slopes may be too severe for the current green speeds but they are a challenge you should experience.
Good course
Better hit it straight. Lots of trees on every hole
Nice course
I arrived at 640am for my 707am tee time and waited with a few others until 703am to tee off and ended up walking the front nine because doors were locked and no carts available. Good thing because it was almost 8am before they opened...or so I heard from gentleman who waited at the clubhouse. But I got a cart for the back nine and finished round in 2 1/2 hours.
Still early in the season so the turf conditions a little wanting but I'm sure by mid summer they'll have it in tip top shape. A few greens have some slope or smaller trees around so missing them right or left requires a skillful chip to get it close. I liked watching the serpentine creek on the front nine and how the water appeared to almost flow uphill!
Definitely worth playing. I only rated it average on this visit because fairways and tees still progressing. Greens and bunkers good.
Serous winter damage
I've played this course many times. Last year it was in immaculate condition. The course suffered serious damage this winter in the fairways. Damage that will likely take months to repair. I would wait until summer to play here. It is a fun course to play.
Excellent shape...
Course was very quiet, beautiful tee boxes and fast greens...just the way we like it...
Nice Course
Plays longer than yards suggest with all the uphill fairways.
Classic old style course, playable for all skills
Very nice condition. I rode, but it is an easy walking course with distances between greens and tee boxes being short. Greens were punched two weeks prior to playing and had healed nicely. Speed was average, not scary fast, not furry slow. Staff was very nice. If you haven't played here, try it!
Nice Course. Hit it straight.
Good time. Roughs were thick. Need to keep the ball in the middle. Fast greens. You don't want a down hill putt. Ball will roll off the green. One of the ladies in the group in front of us hit a hole-in-one. She didn't buy us a drink though. Oh well, still exciting. Would come back again.
Mature Trees
Beautiful Course, played there twice this year, hit the ball straight or hit out of the trees.
good challenge
Tree lined fairways with challenging greens, I wish I could have played better. Went early, pace of play not an issue. Great course definitely play it again.
challenging greens
It was a good round especially for a member of our group got a hole in one.
Great course
The course if fun, the greens are well kept and fast
Over-rated
Old course, some long holes, not much for trouble. Most greens are tilted back to front, without many features, but always in good shape, firm & fast. Good practice area. Wedge hole between 4 & 9. Many loyal local members.
A real joy to play
I was vey happy with my round here. It was the first time I played it but will definitely be back when in the area. This course is a very well maintained, beautiful course which will challenge golfers of all skill levels. You want to be hitting your driver straight the day you play this or you will have to switch to an alternate club as the fairways, although not unfair, are tight and there is a fine line between an excellent drive and a troublesome one. Greens were receptive and very fast with lots of break. Booked on line at Golf Now, couldn't believe the deal, I was expecting to get arrested when I finished the 18th because the deal was so good, especially for the course, I felt like I was stealing. Play it, you won't be disappointed.
Perfect morning
Great morning when I played with just a slight breeze. Course was in great conditions with challenging greens in excellent shape.
