Hendricks Field Golf Course

Played the course for the first time yesterday, driving in from Manhattan via the GWB to avoid the $9 congestion pricing tolls. (That makes it 45-60 minutes from Manhattan, so bear this in mind if you are coming from the City.) The course is not the hardest, but, with the exception of a couple of greens, is in terrific condition . . . best I've seen in a muni other than Torrey Pines. That alone recommends it as a "must play." Desk staff and the starter on duty when I finished were friendly, but the starter when I went out was surly and forgetful. And, would it kill them to have snacks available for purchase?

This classic Charles Banks layout is a true gem only 30 minutes from NYC. Although approximately 6200 yards from the back tees, the distribution of length of the par 4's makes it challenging for moderate drivers of the ball. Three of the 5 par 3's are also quite long, with the 14th at 210 yards from the blue tees.The fairways are generous but the green complexes can be challenging due to the the rough around the greens and the steep drop offs around the greens. The greens are quite large and many have spines running through them which can make long putts difficult. Although the greens were running quite slow the day that I played, the course was in excellent shape. Fun day on the links!

The non-resident fees are high; however, I knew that going into the round. I was traveling from out of town and needed rental clubs the fees quoted on the phone were not what I was charged at the facility. Oh well, so far I can handle all of this. The four different irons, two different shafts and two different woods barely from this century were most assuredly a problem for what I was charged.

Course conditions were not the best, tee boxes were in poor shape on some holes, bare spots around greens, too many ball marks that were not addressed, and poor drainage on several holes. Would not be a problem if I had not paid as much as I did.

Finally, as a first time player I made the mistake of going from the new 12th green to one of the tee boxes on the learning course - the one where they destroyed several original Charles Banks holes to create. I caught my mistake; however, this did not stop the gentleman that runs the learning facility from coming out to rip me a new one and give me a hard time. This one really really bothered me as there was no ill intent and at this point in the slow round, I just wanted to finish.

There are much much better public courses to play in the area at better rates and much much better customer service.

Good public course in great condition for Dec. There was an hour frost delay but we got out about 30 minutes later than our tee time, so the staff did a good job keeping things moving. Bunkers were generally hard and greens had divot marks, but it's December. Would've been nice to have a reduced fee for December. But a good public course overall.

Haven’t played this course since it was renovated. I was surprised at how much they changed and how great shape it was in.

I’ve played several times since the renovation, it was sorely needed and well done! Great value for the money and the foliage made it a beautiful day to play. Give it a try!

The staff is amazing, make playing the course much more enjoyable!

I like the new layout, huge greens complexes as a result of the update which is great but since they are still new greens are a little slow and need some more time to grow and mature.

Definitely worth playing or keeping in the rotation as it does challenge you to hit a variety of shots.

Course doesn’t have a lot of teeth at the moment but if the greens are on the quicker side the course could get really tricky.

Great experience! Course was in great condition having recently been renovated. Very walkable! Staff, Starter and rangers very friendly and welcoming! Good value

Course was nice. Well kept municipal course. Pace of play good . Amenities fair. It was my first time playing this course.

The urinals in the clubhouse shoot back at you . Flush o meters too strong. When u get wet sometimes u forget to ZIP trying to clean off. In the future I would recommend to this golf course staff DO not put a visiting first time senior player on the Defensive. I’m not here to qualify myself! I’m just here to hit balls follow the rules and pace of play and walk away calm.
