Bones of a Great Charles Banks Course are Here
Course used to be private and part of the Essex CC. Absolutely love the layout and all of Banks’ template holes. I really wish they would put some money into this course and restore it. They could have something special.
Fun course, great layout, plenty of challenges
I only went to Byrne this year (after they did expensive renovations), so I heard it was not as nice in the past: but it is wonderful now!
Well maintained , plenty of challenges for all skill levels and each hole is unique: non-cookie cutter. Some golf-purists say the extra bunkers and renovated challenges are “gimmicky” - which is probably true, but I like the gimmicks! Played there 4-5 times and each time is a different experience, so that repeated playability is big in my book
My only critique is that their halfway house, (no food cart either) was closed all season and no food or drink provided (outside of a mini fridge in the pro shop): so be prepared and bring your own snacks etc
Overall though: very fun course and totally worth the money! Highly recommend

Nice course
Enjoyed my round, played with three other gentlemen who definitely made my round very enjoyable. Course was in good shape as far as I could tell as it was my first time playing it. The weather was great and I would play it again.

Enjoyable round
Well maintained course. Prior reviews I read accurately reflected the condition of this course which was a positive. Was paired up with three others. One being a gentleman named Ed who gave me some history on the course and kept the round entertaining and fun. Visiting the area from California and glad I picked this course over the other options I was looking at. Would definitely play it again.

Outstanding
Francis Byrne was always an average course at best - one where you'd prefer to play elsewhere but would only play there if you couldn't get a time anywhere else. No longer. The recent renovation has turned this course into a must-play. It seems to me that they rebuilt each and every one of the 18 greens, added new and rebuilt existing bunkers with brand new sand, and revamped some of the fairways/landing areas. They also created brand new 17th and 18th holes, which makes for a great finish. The greens ran a decent speed and the fairways were in great condition for later in the season.
I have never seen such an extensive renovation on a public course. Byrne, formerly just a run of the mill course, is now one of the best public courses in New Jersey, probably in the 7-10 range if I were to rank them.

Course was in very good shape for this time of year. Was nice to see the renovations that they did. Greens rolling very fast and true. The round was a bit slow but we called the Ranger and they sped up the slow group.
