The approach shot over water on #10 Photo submitted by Michael4721223 on 11/27/2017
Fairways condition was poor. At half the price, Monmouth County courses and condition are superior to Suneagles.
Perfect Conditions
The course is in great condition.
Greens perfect.
Staff excellent
Historic and wonderful layout!
I liked playing this course a lot and played it for my golf buddies to see if it would be something that they wold like to travel to to play. I found that the three holes or so made returning not a good choice for me because the design was ruined by the changes.
My new home course
Absolutely loved this course. Very challenging and very well maintained. Friendly staff and decent pace of play Will definitely return.
Decent course
Not a very long course, but smartly laid out to present some challenges
A little shaggy
We’ve had so much rain that the course was a little shaggy. Greens were perfect. Because of the rain the course was wet and soft. I’ll play again
First timer
Decent golf course but greens were too slow, even downhill. Pace of play was a big problem. Three holes open for group in front of us at turn. Called rangers and they tried to get them to move faster but not significantly improved over back nine. 4.5 hours on a Tuesday AM is too long on this course (not especially hard). Should have had the group skip one or two holes to get everyone moving again.
Will give them one more chance before recommending.
Tillinghast would be ashamed
"I maintain that the Suneagles Course ranks among the best of my creations." A.W. Tillinghast
This is the quote on the front of their scorecard, but if he were alive to see it now, he would be aghast at what it has become. I don't think I've ever given a course 1 star until now, but this one earned it.
I pull up and it's clear there is a lot of construction and work going on, but there is absolutely no signage to help direct traffic coming in, had no idea where I was going at first. You might think that the construction is going into making the course better, and you'd be wrong, it's going into the clubhouse/concert venue. Yeah, a concert venue, on a golf course. Because I love hearing the noise of guitars and drums of the soundcheck while I'm teeing off or in the middle of my shot, absolutely brilliant. Totally not a desperation move from management to try and get more people in.
Go to the clubhouse and check in, asked how much a bucket of balls is, and the price tag is $15. It's not even a decent driving range, it's one net in the back and no side netting, and it's adjacent to the 1st and 18th holes, so if you're playing, you run the extreme risk of getting hit from someone on the range (which I almost did). And $15 for a bucket, I've never seen range balls priced that high. Their putting green is small and definitely not meant to handle huge crowds.
I walk up to the 1st tee about 15 minutes early for my 11:40 tee time and meet my playing partner. The group scheduled in front of us is nowhere to be found. Instead of letting me and my partner out, the starter forces us to wait. It is now, 11:40, I'm lined up and about to hit my ball, when the starter stops me, the 11:30 tee time just got here and he puts them in front of us. I'm sorry, excuse me?! I was here on time, as was my partner, they were late, they do not get to go in front of us, especially when I'm in the middle of my setup. So now we are forced to go out late, and when I told the starter this, he was completely rude and shrugged it off.
But now the actual course, it was in awful condition. Dry patches, poorly maintained bunkers, geese poop litters the course, and the aforementioned construction. When it wasn't the soundcheck people, it was the loud, heavy duty equipment interrupting my shot, and it could be heard throughout the entire course. And that late group in front of us was slow, so poor pace of play as well.
Bad experience, bad course, will not be spending my money here again. And the funny thing, my playing partner was a local, and said the course is in much better shape than it has been. Wow, if it was this bad today, I don't even want to know what it was like years ago. Go somewhere else and play, save your money. Paid somewhere around $50-60 to play here, this course is not worth $20.
Doesn’t drain well after rain
It’s a nice course with challenging holes. I wouldn’t recommend playing if it rained the day before.
Disappointing - Run Don’t Walk Away
Lots of potential but course management and staff are awful toward the paying public. My advice: not worth the money or the sheer aggravation you have to put up with. Today was a first in 23 years of playing gold all over the world: told has to ride and could NOT walk with a handcart because too much rain/water on the course. I understand “cart path only” for golf carts due to weather but if the course is too wet for players to walk with a handcart, why isn’t it too wet to for the golf carts? My suggestion: Get someone to manage the course who knows what they are doing.before they ruin a good thing.
Awesome greens but Not worth the price
First time playing course since my buddy lives nearby and said they were doing lots of work to it well it poured overnight so it was cartpath only no big deal Fairways haven’t seen a mower in about a month Greens were amazing to go along with a nice tricky layout. My beef was it was raining and we only got 9 holes in and went in to ask for a 9 hole rain check well the young kid looked at me like I had 20 heads and said he couldn’t do it . I was dismayed to say the least but as I left I ran into the afternoon starter and said to call the pro shop in Am and request again. It’s a Tillinghast design that is reminiscent of nearby JumpingBrook Course will be top notch in about 2-3 years
Not ready for play at the price I paid
This course is not ready for play and the pace of play was outrageous. Took well over 5 hours and we had to skip a group and hole. No ranger in site until the 17th. Our foursome turned into a 5 some as the single between us and the next group played with us because we were waiting at each tee box 10-15 mins with him. The other two guys we were paired with left after 13 because it was too slow and they were fed up. The course is going through what a appears a major reconstruction but you would not know it by the price $85 also $15 for a bucket of range balls (outrageous) the course had temporary tees, grounds crew fixing things during the round, hoses out and sprinkles on during play, giant mounds of dirt and gravel, condos being built in the middle of the course, we actually had to move our cart off the path once so a dump truck could pass in front of the tee box. Just overall was not an enjoyable round I try to be positive as I’m still playing golf but maybe once this course is finished it will be nice but I wouldn’t go back until then. Even the one positive the new gps carts became annoying as they have regulators that stop the cart in certain areas sometimes u cant use the cart as far as 100 yards from the green just another annoying thing
Dog track
When it was run by the US Army it was above average . But lately ( under new ownership) it is a horrendous! Don’t bother playing here no matter what the cost
Said a lot of the same stuff in my review, including the $15 price tag on range balls. Never seen it that high, and I've played pretty much all over the state of NJ and several other states.
