Farmstead Golf & Country Club - Clubview/Valleyview Course
About
The Clubview nine, which opened in 1963, is the original course at the 27-hole Farmstead Golf & Country Club, located in northwest New Jersey, approximately one hour from New York City. Offering a traditional mix of par 3s, par 4s and par 5s, accuracy is key on the Byron Phoebus-designed course. The Clubview nine closes with two very demanding holes, the long par-4 eighth, with an approach shot over water, and the par-3 ninth, which is surrounded by water.

Farmstead is a great value.
Farmstead us usually a great value course. Style is a little dated but the course can be challenging with lots of water and some long par 3s . Greens are usually in good shape, although they were working on two holes so there wasn't any putting on the temporary greens. Still the best value in the area by far.
Excellent Layout
Friendly staff (in pro shop & starter); tees & fairways were in fair condition; greens were slow; however, the layout is very well-done - I was paired with 2 guys who were neophytes, but, we had a good time during the round. I played here many times in 2013 and just a couple of times previously this year, when the course conditions were much better. Not sure why things were "off" yesterday - a little more care afforded to the greens & fairways would have made it an A+ experience.
Living off the past
I have played a Farmstead a lot over the years, but recently they have started to 'carve' a little in my opinion. Squeezing people onto Club so the back 9 is really slow just irritates and the ranger bombing around brashly telling people to get a move on is just unnecessary. If people are taking 6 shots on a par 4 it may take a little longer. Don't get irritated at them because you try to sneak extra people on the course.
Course seems to have suffered from a lot of play over the summer, but it's still a nice course and can be a test.
Staff are nice apart from the ranger, but maybe they are all much nicer to the regulars rather than us strangers.
A Great Round for a Good Price
A Sunday foursome with my father and brothers - what could be better than that? A beautiful day at a beautiful course for a good price. $65 with cart through GolfNow for a 10:40 tee time is quite good if you ask me.
The course was in great shape. The greens were a bit fast but the fairways, rough, and tee boxes were in great shape. Such a beautiful course - the scenery is excellent. No complaints on the day - especially after a birdie on the 18th!
love this course
Plenty of water on the Lake View 9, and even the club view 9 is very challenging. Course was in great shape, my 3rd time here in 2 years, and I will keep coming back. One of the best courses for the price, and the overall views are beautiful.
staff
Staff is not friendly. My daughter was sick and unable to play so we dud not have the foursome we reservrd. We offered to pay but they so said but yet were very nasty about the e tire incident. Gives golf a bad name!
Horrible pace of play.
Extremely slow pace of play and I mentioned to the starter on my way to the 10th hole and still never saw any rangers out there. We were tired of waiting every hole so we left after 11 holes. That's horrible
This One Sneaks Up On You
To look at the scorecard one would might think Farmstead lacked sufficient challenges but the layout, size and speed of the greens (especially on the shortish Valleyview 9) turn a potentially lazy track into something you've got to pay attention to. Moreover, the bounce an undulations of said greens require careful reading and a judicious pacing.
As for accommodations, this track doubles as a wedding venue and offers a robust 19th hole food and beverage program . To wit, I ordered a burger at the at the shack at the turn and was served in 3 minutes--nice way to keep things moving.
I would play here again if for no other reason than to apply some course knowledge to the effort. The Valley View 9 is a bit odd in this regard leaving me to demand a rematch!
Overall, Farmstead, with featureless fairways, is not spectacular enough to demand full retail fees but I will definitely pick up my sticks and come out again using the "GolfNow" discount.
Lots of wildlife, beautiful scenery also the course is one of the best ones i have played in this area
This course has great features, lots of water and hazards good placement off the tees is a must. Fairways are some of the best in area, enjoyed playing this course and will be back.
this is a beautiful course
there is abundant wild life out towards the evening
they have flowers at some tee's
each of 3 9's are different themes for great variety
it qualifies for all category's below except location which I checked
Farmstead Golf Course
course was in very nice shape greens were a bit slow but overall very nice
Reliable course
Course is kept in good condition. Amenities and staff are nice. Good course for an average player that cares more about being out and playing golf vs. his or her score. Course is not too challenging. Pace of play can be slow (4 1/2 to 5 hours for 18 holes in not uncommon). Tee times are generally available, especially during the week. Look for deals at golfnow.com.
Nice course
Farmstead is a nice place to play . The only issue was that they scheduled an outing on Sunday so play was a little slow and our tee time was pushed back 30 minutes. Other than that it was a nice day in the country.
Great greens
This is nicely laid out course. It's not easy but not difficult. The greens are in beautiful shape, the best I've played this year. It was worth the trip and I look forward to playing the course again.
Excellent value
Farmstead is always in great condition. Excellent value for money compared to nearby courses. 27 holes provide plenty of variety.
May 10, 2014 Review
Decided to play this course after an evening of continuous rain and a special price of $18. Course was in good condition except for several fairways that had casual water from the rain. Greens on Lakes and Valley course are slow and undulated however the Valley course greens are much smaller in area. Blue tees have the par 3's at 200+ yards and 150+ yds from the whites. A few more days for water drainage and the course should be back to excellent condition status.
AWSOME
One of the best courses in New Jersey...hands down!!!
Good course with lots of nature
Course was in great shape. Pace of play was a good pace. Nature all around. Spring conditions were good.
