Course was great/Staff could use some work
My day had not even started yet when I was on the range warming up with a 60 degree wedge hitting the plastic balls no more than 75yds. Every mat was occupied when we all heard the bell for the golfers to cross. We all proceeded to wait until they had crossed and were out of view. As every single person on the range started hitting driver again I went back to my 60. This is when I see the ranger driving directly at me only to ask me "if I was too dumb to understand the rule." He then continued to stay in front of me and try to embarrass me while each and every person on the range continued to hit. I've played at this course many times as I live a few blocks away and have never been spoken to like I was yesterday in front of my good friend who had come to visit and play Saxon Woods because I said it was great. If I ever spoke to someone like that at my job I would be gone in a matter of minutes. There is a way to handle things and a way to drive people away and obviously he chose the latter. I just thought this was the type of thing a beautiful facility like Saxon would want to know about, especially when the entire staff from the other rangers to the bar/restaurant staff were SO great and professional.
Great Condition and demand on shot making
The course was well presented and although short it made up for that with a demand on shot making.
It was spoilt by slow play and lack of marshals. The group in front were two holes behind.
Saxon Woods G.C.
Played with a family of 3 who knew the course layout. Although there had been a good rain the night prior, the course was in excellent shape and only a few places where there was standing water. Overall condition of the course was excellent and there were a nice variety of holes with doglegs, up and down some moderate hills, trees, sand and some water. Only quirky aspect of the course was the driving range hitting over our path up the 10th fairway!!!! The greens were in good shape and they putted well. Just make sure you stay below the hole on many of them. I would definitely play the course again. Thoroughly enjoyed the course.
great time!
This is a fun course. I'm a beginner, and there's plenty of challenging holes, and abundant beauty on this course.
Good course
I went out with my sons to get in an early year round. The course conditions were like any other course who had a rough NY winter. It was good practice round to get back into swinging the clubs. Will try the course later this summer when conditions are better of course, but overall the course has a nice layout.
Classy Classic NY Golf Course
It is fair to say I was surprised by how much I liked this golf course. I figured it would be a run of the mill type course, but it turned out to be a really fun track with a great setup. From the practice facility to the GPS on the new carts, it was a really good value for this part of the world.
The greens were very firm and tough to hold, but the tee boxes, fairways and rough were all in very good shape considering it is the first week in May. the bunkers were very inconsistent, but serves me right for landing in so many sand traps! Despite playing poorly, I thoroughly enjoyed my round which took under 4.5 hrs to play!
The only knock I have on the course is that you have to drive through the driving range after one of your tee shots. Very strange and dangerous, just straight up bizarre. However, I will definitely be returning to this course in the near future, and look forward to scoring better the second time around.
nice course
Nice county course, good condition
will play again
This course is average but the starter needs customer service skill and more rangers on the course, the speed of play is extremely slow.
The starter is rude and he jammed up the course with players who are on the later schedule. just to have a foursome out there. Our tee time was pushed back.. There are no rangers available on the course to keep the pace of play. Our group played 13 holes that day in 4 1/2 hrs.
Improved
This course has improved 200% since I last played it
Great Job with the Course
I have played here for 30 years and this was some of the best conditions I can ever remember. Tee Boxes , fairways , rough and greens were all in great shape. Everyone friendly , both staff and other golfers. Started a bit late but moved along just fine after that. Course in much better shape than Hudson Hills which has no range , it is dried out , just aerated and tee boxes beat up . Play here or Mohansic and save a lot of money.
I dont like this course
Very danger range ball
Hit cross hit to the farewway
Fun for Practice
I played Friday evening August 1, 2014. Course was in very nice condition generally. Challenging enough to need nearly all clubs in the bag. Facilities are in good condition, except for the men's room. You can smell the urine from the hall! Also the snack bar after hole #7 has been closed this season. Sure wish it was open - you need a refreshment at that point in the round.
All in all, as long as you don't have to go to the bathroom, you'll have a fun round. Give it a try.
Good Value for Money
Pace of play was typical for a Saturday during the summer, we were in no rush so we didn't mind a 5 hour round. Overall course was in good condition, I've heard it has drainage problems but it hadn't rain the previous 5 days so that wasn't an issue for us. I think its a great value ($55 riding on a weekend), and the course was in pretty good shape. Greens were slow but were consistent with the practice green. Carts have a GPS which is a nice feature for a municipal course, but most holes were cart path only which struck me as odd (perhaps this is why course was in good shape).
Overall satisfied with the experience and I'd play there again. Easy commute on train from NYC as well.
long day
Corse is in good condition but pace of play was very slow. Spent just as long sitting in golf cart waiting to play as I did plating
Great Venue
First of all, don't let the 6100 yards fool you. this is a course that plays uphill and it can be a workout for a senor citizen. That being said, it is a really fun and interesting place to play. The holes are all distinctive and pose a challenge for those of us who are a 14 handicap. The round took us 5 hours but that is because we spent lots of time looking in the dense rough looking for lost balls. The greens were some what slow but putted true. We finished up and sat down for a beer and dinner. The food was very good and the service was excellent. All in all we had a great day and I wo0uld highly recommend this golf facility. We will be back.
Great cours
Saxon woods was a great course. The course was in excellent shape and the holes were challenging and well laid out.
Play on a rainy day.
If you want to play Saxon Woods but are turned off by negative reviews and complaints about long rounds at the Westchester County courses, I would highly suggest playing on a rainy weekday like we did yesterday.
We arrived with an iffy forecast which would have drove most golfers away. That would explain why nobody was there, as we didn't see a group in front of or behind us the entire time. We played at our own pace (as a 3-some, riding cart-paths only), and avoided any significant rain, which made our round at SW very enjoyable.
As for the course itself:
Cons: understandably wet, but a decent amount of standing water, poor drainage in some rough areas; some greens were pretty patchy and slow even for a damp day; a couple of tee boxes were slightly uneven-- it was hard to find a level place to put the tee and stand; driving range is comical to say the least-- it crosses the 10th fairway, so there are balls EVERYWHERE; Also, I can see how if and when it gets busy, with maybe 2 or 3 groups on a hole at a time, it could get really claustrophobic, causing you to play the course too safely.
Pros-- friendly guys in the pro shop, at the first hole, and even a ranger when there might have been maybe 4 groups on the course; course conditions were ok; course layout might be one of the better ones out of the public county courses; just enough hazards to make interesting and not daunting; a good mix of long holes, short holes, straight holes, and doglegs, but there is a long stretch without a single par 3 (Hole 7, then hole 16).
Overall, I would say give it a try, or try it again. But go at a time you think no one will be there.
Many different looks
Wow!! Super clean - Flows great! Going into intermediate level I found the course more challenging than some of the other course which made it a lot more fun to play. Had a great time!
Not a bad course.
Have putting, chipping area.. and range.. good pace.. just the green is not that good..
