Moderate challenge, decent layout, needs water
Went on Thursday May 13th, weather had been good for 4 days and that day was 75 and sunny (PERFECT WEATHER). Perfect enough that I took off early from work to get a round in.
I played the course once before but it had just been aerated and was more sand than course, incredibly disappointing. This time the greens were in good shape (staff told me it was aerated about a month ago) The fairways had just been aerated but that didnt both me so much, they were in decent shape. What mainly bothered me was how hard the turf was. Tee boxes and fairways seemed like they hadn't had water. Which is surprising considering before this span of good weather, we had a week of rain. The course could have used some sprinklers spreading water around throughout the day. I had several shots affected because I was basically hitting off concrete trying to get under the ball. Again, overall I enjoyed the round, that was really my ONLY complaint. The greens were consistent and decent shape, the weather was perfect, and I shot a 92 for my first round of the year (I am about a 20 handicap). There isnt too many bunkers on this course, thank goodness because the sand isn't consistent from one to the next. As with most public courses, you must test the sand, because you can either hit from lush sand or borderline concrete.
For a Thursday 3PM tee time, it was decently busy at the course. We didnt actually Tee Off until about 3:30, but once we got going, the pace was okay. Better yet, I saw a park ranger doing rounds at least 3 times on the day, which is better than most other public courses. Tells me they are at least monitoring the situation, if not doing anything.
Overall, the round was enjoyable. The layout is nice, its right on the water. And while it can get a little noisy near the Taconic highway, its not bad overall. The weather made the round great, and for mid-May, it was about as good as I can expect for a county course.
Great Course
Greens were punched about two weeks ago but the course was in great shape otherwise.
Thanks for the review, Sean! Hope the greens having been punched recently didn't cause you too much of an inconvenience. Come back and play again soon!
Not long, but greens a challenge
Sprain Lake is a nice layout, with short holes and some considerable elevation changes. The greens were very tricky, as pin placements were located on severe slopes on many holes, making it difficult to get close without rolling away off the green. It's early in the season, so perhaps once the greens grow in a bit, this will not be an issue. It was a beautiful day and we had no one behind or in front of us, though it is March, so this will change as the season goes on. I look forward to playing there again soon.
December golf , it's all good
55 degrees and sunny , dec. 7th . Course was in great shape , greens included , had a lot of fun .
Good Local Course
Will return again. Very nice staff. Beautiful day. ............................................
Great Little Course
Played Sprain on a lark. Reviews were good, so I gave it a shot. It is a moderate challenge if you are higher than a single digit handicap. Not long, but interesting and beautiful. Greens are among the best public course greens I have seen in a long time. Exceptionally well maintained. A fun course.
Great Greens
The greens were in excellent condition, best in years.
Don't overthink the course
Nice Course. Fun to play. Greens were a little fast and tee boxes were not in great shape. But fairways were well maintained and it was a good course to use course management skills. I would play it again.
Conditions were average
For the price to play during the week, it was a good deal but the course conditions were less than average while the fairways needed some repair and maintenance. Greens were nice and the pace was good. Food was not something memorable but the experience with the scenic holes made it all worth the while. Highly recommended during the week.
Jim Bronner
Greens were aerated and had so much sand on them to the point where you were leaving footprints in the sand on the green. Course should have been closed.
Golf course in tip top shape
I play Sprain Lake golf course maybe once a month. I like it here because it's near where I live and very easy to get a tee time. The course is not very long so it suits short hitters like me. But beware, this course will punish you if you don't know where to place your shots. Golf course is in tip top shape from tee, fairways to green. Definitely one of my favorite course.
This course is awesome.
With a beautiful layout and nice scenery, this is one of the most beautiful course I have ever play in NY.
Nice layout very tricky greens
Overall in good shape a lot of hard pan around but it's been hot and course needs water
Excellent value with world-class hospitality!
I am very impressed with this beautiful and scenic course! From the time we arrived, the friendly staff greeted us with the kind of genuine warmth and hospitality encountered normally in high-end 5-star spas or hotel & resorts! Even the woodchucks, geese, and dear are quite comfortable sharing the space and adding a unique blend of the wildlife natural habitat with the fairways and greens. Exceptional staff and friendly patrons made our 6:30 tee time all the more enjoyable. I would definitely recommend to family and friends and will return to play this course.
Sprain Lake
Course has a lot to offer, hills, water distance.
course is in good condition
Rude employees
My brother and I are both in are twenties, and it's safe to say we won't be coming back any time soon. The gentleman who paired us with another player was extremely rude. We let the random member of our group play through so we did not slow his pace down. There was a foursome moving very slow, more than an entire hole behind us, and there was no way they would catch up to us. When the man who paired us up with the 3rd guy realized we let that 3rd member move on without us, he was extremely rude and condescending. Even our third group member, who was around 40 years old, was confused as to why the man was so aggressive. We continued to play, the 3 of us, behind an extremely slow foursome of older gentlemen. We slowed our own pace a significant amount simply so we wouldn't be On top of them all day. Course conditions were solid through the front 9. We got to the 10th and the rain started. It went on heavily for about an hour or so before we decided it was time to go. I went inside and asked if there was a rainout policy where maybe we could get a half refund considering we only got through 9 holes. But no, the desk man was not exactly friendly in telling me that we had to wait it out. 51$ for 9 holes. The course was one big puddle by the time we left, rain still coming down. Would I recommend this course to a friend? No. Am I going back? Absolutely not.
Do yourself a favor and find a better course..this place is nothing but RUDE people playing and running this place... the worst management team i have ever seen..from the check in desk to the starter and there are no marshalls to push the pace of play people playing 2 and 3 balls and they don't care that they're slowing the whole course down...
Surprisingly good
I enjoyed playing on this course which was in very good shape and certainly challenging enough for my friend and me. I will play here again. The staff was very accommodating to a first time player.
Fun Westchester County Course
With the exception of 11, I can't really say there are any awful golf holes on this track. Course plays quite short so it's a good place to practice your approaches with wedges or short irons. Some fun holes with big elevation changes (2,3,9). Greens were OK, fairways were quite plush. Some of the greenside areas and bunkers needed work. All-in-all happy to play here anytime I'm in the area and solid value for ~$40 w/ cart.
Great course
It was a great course I would recommend if do anyone
