TO SLOW
Terrible course management. Rangers need to push people around the course instead of searching for balls and chipping around the course. you can't have meetings in the middle of the fairway. How about seniors playing up a little. And the ladies need to walk Just a little faster. When you start at 7:15 am and finish at noon. THAT'S SLOW. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE TO PLAY.
1st Time Review
As a new golfer, I feel the course was challenging and the scenic view was awesome. I learned that the course was sloppily due to where the golf course made. Yes, I will play here again and will update my review.
Very nice Westchester Public Course
The course is maintained well. Only one green shows some fungi in a small area. Tees are good. The course is not very difficult if drives are kept on fairways. Greens hold incoming shots well. I'm told the greens are slower early in the week, and can certainly vouch for that. I was not used to green this slow. Some challenging holes, and the par threes are not particularly easy. Water in play frequently. Enjoyable.
Decent buy for the money
A course for practicing your game. Some scenic holes. Others are forces into the topography. Ground hogs are friendly.
needs a haircut
Greens were very slow. Playing partner compared them to shag carpet. A number of short holes. OK for a muni but I will not go back.
Trouble Can Find You
Sprain Lake is a moderately challenging course presenting an interesting variety of holes in a relatively short layout. The fairways tend to be lined with trees and the occasional crosscutting streams and ponds that will snare marginally off line shots. The greens are well maintained, fairly flat and medium sized. There are bald spots on many of the fairways.
On balance an enjoyable experience on a course that can be sneakily unsettling.
Always a good time.
I really like it here. Most holes leave plenty of space for your tee shot and the fairways and greens are in good condition.
Easily Managed
A short-playing course; par is 34 on the front. 36 on the back. As a high-handicapper, my most consistent wood is a Callaway 7 wood, so I left my driver and 3 in the bag and used it exclusively and was easy 2nd shot range on virtually all the 4s and well positioned on the 5s. The course has some challenging greens, with a few multi-tiers, and a blind approach on 3. Geese droppings are omni-present, particularly on the front. Play can be dreadfully slow, but rangers are active and responsive to calls to the clubhouse. Water on the course after 7 and, I think, 12.
DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE
Worst course in America
Tee Boxes are a mess and faced the wrong direction.
Fairways have little to no grass.
Greens conditions are terrible.
Waiting for sprinklers to stop on at least 8 holes so we could hit our shots.
Distances are wrong.
Nothing positive at all about this course.
Do not play here!!!
Sprain Lake
What a fun course! Well maintained tee boxes and fairways. The greens were pretty nice as well and quick for a public course. A few nice elevation changes on a few holes, some water in play of course, and some easy par 3's. The people were friendly and made it a great round even though it was packed (stuck behind an outing so took over 5 hours). I would love to play here again when there isn't an outing in front of me.
Serious neglect
Probably the worst conditions I have seen on a public course in the tri state area. Its an easy course for intermediate. From tee boxes, to fairways to greens this has been seriously neglected for many years. Doesn't take much to pick up a rake and clean the grounds. Seriously not worth the money. Play is also painfully slow.
The course requires accuracy off of the tees.
Enjoyed the course, but play was slow. Playing for the first time, it was difficult picking where to aim off of the tees. The GPS did not give distances to the corners or hazards. Greens putted well.
One of the easier course around
The majority of holes have wide open straight fairways. It is a very forgiving course. Greens were a little slow due to earlier rain. Overall a nice course, but could be maintained better. This course is great for someone just starting to play or is used to par 3s and want to play a full size course.
This course has great features with excellently keep grounds.
Thanks to Golf Now I was able to play at a great rate. The course is maintained at excellent conditions with great options.
good county course
I have played this course many times, it never seem to get boring. They recently put in new cart paths and spruced up a few fairways. Great value.
This course has great features
The course is short, but challenging. Situated along Sprain Lake, it is quite scenic, and the breeze from the lake on a 90+ degree day was welcome, and made it a pleasant day to play the game of golf. There is a risk/reward aspect to it that makes it a challenging (but not difficult) course to play. I look forward to playing it again this summer.
Never again
The course was in decent condition and was very easy, but the clientele was horrible and did not know basic etiquette. We had a group of 12 playing an unsanctioned "tournament" in front of us and when asked to play through they became verbally aggressive and thought we were cheating them. Needless to say I will never return to this course - which is unfortunate because it was a fun local course but the other players ruined it.
Good muni course. Some good holes on the course with different challenges.
The course is good but the greens were too slow. They have made some good changes to some holes, but I would have liked to see some better greens.
Great if you have the discounted tee time
***Warning*** After a couple of rounds at the westchester county courses, I think the Hot Tee Times offered through GolfNow are when they put the sprinklers on-- so expect a wet round at some of these courses.
Sprain Lake first impressions: not as tight or as short as I expected. It is an interesting layout and I definitely used all of the clubs in the bag.
Pros: Some nice scenery; decently maintained; lots of water; pretty easy
Cons: lots of rocky ground under repair (close to cart paths on first 3 or 4 holes)--move your ball unless you want a nice dent/chip on your wedges; our starter this afternoon wasn't cordial or even attentive; blind holes that are ridiculous without course knowledge; only about 6,000 yards from the whites, so there are about 6 or 7 short par 4s; too expensive even with the county golf card
I would only recommend booking your tee time through GolfNow so you can save some money for other courses in the area
Hold off until repairs are complete
It is a good course but they are going under major repairs due to all the storms. Great value for the money and their Pro Shop is well stocked and cheap. They charge $ 1 deposit for the Cart Key.
