Most improved in Westchester
The locals call Sprain the Pebble Beach of Westchester. That’s a wild overstatement for this muni, but there are water views of the adjacent State reservoir that comes into play on the front and back nine. The county deserves credit for improvements to tees and greens, especially the par 3, no. 9 where a sheer back-to-front slope has been leveled to hold a decent tee shot. Pace of play can be an issue, especially on the third hole with a short fairway that ends at a steep drop off. Players whose tee shots are short have a blind second shot to the green below. A ranger is needed, but rarely on hand. The home holes are great downhill drives that favor strategy over distance. The green at 18 tucked into a corner behind 9 looks small and demands a well-struck second shot with trouble on all sides. Love this track!
Good Westchester Public Course
I have played this course many times. The conditions are continually improving over the years. Layout is somewhat problematic in that the third hole causes a backup due to a blind shot to the green for the second. If fortunate there is a ranger out there to the right signaling players to tee off and aiding in spotting the balls. After the third play moves well until hole 15 where there is another downhill blind tee shot where balls hit off to the right are lost in the woods. This is a fun public course and management and maintenance have improved with time.

A better public course
Although most public courses do not have as good of upkeep as private clubs, Sprain does a solid job throughout the season. If more golfers replaced divots and fixed their ball marks it would help. Otherwise challenging course.

Enjoyable & Comfortable
Played many different courses in NJ & NY recently and Sprain Lake is now a future option, ....especially if it's a hot deal.
Commute with tolls and 'regular' rates are only hesitation.

In decent shape
So first off, therental clubs for $25, were terrible, for $50 they have AP3's. My complaint about that is the driver had a regular flex.
The course is green and lush, I wish people would repair their divots, I try to repair an extra divot when on greens, you should do the same. The greens were super soft, so they held shots, they rolled fairly well, but were on the slow side. The fairways and tee boxes were in good shape also and I appreciated the depth of the rough. Even though the course is only 6000yrs from the tips, you have to hit fairways or it will cost you a ton of strokes. It was a buddy of mine first time playing the course and he enjoyed it.
