Find good golf and great food at Trappers Turn in Wisconsin

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. - Driving north on U.S. Route 12, golfers pass the madness of the Dells - the waterparks, Tommy Bartlett waterski show on Lake Delton, fast-food joints and rollercoasters that attract thousands of families on vacation every year.

Thankfully, there is an oasis of trees and green grass once you emerge from these tourist traps. Trappers Turn offers 27 holes hidden in the forest at the edge of town. Designed by two-time U.S. Open winner Andy North, a Wisconsin native, and Roger Packard, Trappers Turn sports an interesting mix of meadow holes one minute and tight, tree-lined challenges the next. Three nines - the Lake, Canyon and Arbor - are almost interchangeable. Both the Lake and Canyon start out with tough first tee shots, but then settle into a nice flow of holes before ending on stout, scenic par 5s. The best hole has to be no. 7 on Canyon, a 148-yard par 3 with a green tucked into a rock bed. There's no margin for error on the downhill approach with the forest encroaching on three sides.

Part of the allure of Trappers Turn is its fantastic food-and-beverage operation. A prime rib Sunday brunch has become popular with the locals. For dinner, the restaurant serves an appetizer of the "largest cheese curds" in Wisconsin. Tasty and fulfilling - just like the golf.
