One of those days where you would love for a ranger to drive a few groups ahead and find out who was holding everyone back...makes for impatient golfers. Saturday morning needs to have a ranger keeping everyone on pace.
Great “State Park Course”
Driving to Montgomery Bell was the most difficult part. Finding these course is a bit difficult (regardless of Waze, Apple Maps, etc). That being said, the course was in surprisingly good condition for being early April. The Staff was nice when we got there, but non-existent after we paid our greens-fees. Pace of play was okay, but we were not notified that they were having a 4 man scramble the day we booked our tee time. All in all, yes I would recommend the course because it is a beautiful, old golf course that most golfers would enjoy.
Very nice course, wish we had been about 2 weeks later when the grass had come back in.
Staff was awesome, challenging layout.
Good course but pretty rough
The course is a good layout but at this time of year very rough off fairways and tee boxes were rough. Play picked up and had a great time.
Nice state park course
Played here this week for the first time and it's pretty nice for a state park course. I work at a city ran course in Memphis and wish we had better conditions like these. Pretty rural area, fast pace of play and great price. Amazing how many deer running around the entire course. I hope to be back at some point.
Very enjoyable golf course. Worth the drive!
I drove almost an hour to play this course and was not disappointed. Unfortunately, the day I played had a full tee sheet and play was very slow. I won't hold that against them, though. Overall, it's a great course and I look forward to returning next season.
Fun course
Great shape and greens were FAST! I knocked it 1 star on account of it running a bit short. Fortunately (if you call it that) I'm a bit injured with a rib strain so my swing speed is down so the shorter course played to my advantage, that said if you can carry the ball 270+ you're gonna want to play from the tips otherwise you're definitely going to out drive some fairways.
Good course
We played on a Fall Saturday afternoon, first time playing the course. Greens were hard but darn near perfect, and matched the putting green. Fairways were excellent and rough was tough and thick. Great wildlife and scenery.
There's several blind uphill tee shots, so some information on yardages and preferred placement would be extremely helpful. Also there are overgrown limbs directly in front of the white tees on 2 of those holes, making the course completely different than from the back tees. Please insert the plastic cup deeper into the Earth, they were all placed even with the ground. On #2 I hit a beautiful flop shot that came down on the edge of the hole and it struck the cup, bouncing the ball 10' up and 25' long and left.
It's still a great course and some small maintenance changes would change my overall to a 5 star.
Extremely fast greens
Course is a beautiful setting. Greens were insanely fast. Not a course for bump and run around greens. Hard to stick an approach shot. Greens were very firm. Enjoyed playing this course.
Underrated Excellece
For the last several seasons, I have played this course 1 to 2 times weekly. Without question, the condition of the course this season is second to none. Everything about Montgomery Bell is well above average. The staff is always friendly. During the reopening after the initial quarantine, the golf course staff followed the appropriate protocol and also made transactions easy. Now that the course is back open for normal business, the staff remains top notch. There is a noticable difference in the condition of the course year over year as well. The greens are some the most reliable but difficult I have played. The fairways reward you for well struck drives and approach shots. The secondary cut and rough are maintained well enough to allow for the difficulty they are designed for. I have reintroduced a few friends to Montgomery Bell this season after they had stopped playing there several years back. They all agree, the improvements are excellent!
