Always nice!!
It's hard to say anything bad about this course other than the price of it is a little bit too high! For the money, Royal New Kent is a much better deal as it is in just as good condition but Independence is very nice!
Greens like glass, and conditions great overall but.....
To have 18th hole closed for watering at 2pm is ridiculous when they charged full 100 green fee. I get it we need the rain but water early in the morning or don’t charge full price.
Beautiful, but..
18th hole wasn't open as they were watering (at 2 pm?). I get that we're in a dry stretch, but water earlier so all holes can be open OR don't charge full price. Not what you expect from a $100 course.
Short Course
Played the short course second week of March and the course was great for this time of year. Can't wait to see what the course will look like in the summer!
Except for the price, a great experience!!
I have to imagine that Independence is as close to a PGA tour course as any in the Richmond area! I don't think I have ever played faster greens except at Kingsmill! But I truly enjoyed the experience.
Impressive
I’ve heard a lot about this course and in my opinion it lived up to the hype! A 39 degree day and the course played like peak spring! The greens were amazing and quick! I will be back!!
Try it once, then save your money...
Didn’t play very well at all, but got to see the course.
The good -
They have endless, new range balls and things to aim at, a field goal post, flags, metal signs, among other things
Greens are certainly proper. Fast, true.
Sand traps are proper, raked and unpacked even with all the rain
Tee boxes are perfectly flat and mowed
Maintenance is apparent
I drove a green on a short par 4
The bad
I still think it is way over priced. You can play The Golden Horseshoe for less and it is an elite course, and once a PGA tour stop back in the day.
The interesting
The marshal rides in a Lexus
The conclusion
I’d play it again, preferably in the warmer months but not for $100. The club is missing out on a LOT of potential play IMO by pricing it so high. It just isn’t an elite course. For comparison, Kiskiack’s greens are just as good, layout is similar and they charge no more than $50, often $25. Meadowbrook, a private course with a similar layout, less the same elevation changes, excellent greens, will let you play for less than $50. For me, Independence, while a nice course, is a badly overpriced golf course that needs to pay for the Lexus and the massive clubhouse somehow.
great course
greens were absolutely perfect. highly recommend.
Virginia Beauty
Course in great shape. Greens fast but true. Nice driving range. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
Great Place
First time playing there and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Greens were above average speed and in great condition. Ball rolled true every time. Bermuda rough is tough so try to stay in fairways. Layout was fine, nothing too crazy. I would put this in my top 5 courses in Richmond.
