Best public course in Richmond
Great layout. Best greens in the area. Extremely fast but true. Food is great staff is friendly and attentive. Greens fee is slightly steep but well worth it. A must play if you’re in the area.
Bombers paradise, Great greens, lousy restaurant.
Son and I played there on a long weekend trip about 6 hours from home. Played with two great members from Independence GC. Was greeted by great staff and starter. Length is great for the appropriate tees you should play. Fairways were in excellent shape. But star of this course is the greens. 10.5 on stimp. Undulating greens that made some putts very interesting and fun at the same time. Very smooth. No ball marks on greens since they were fairly firm. If you hit a solid shot, you would make a small one. Very playable layout that was not overly hard. Fairways wide and bunkers were very playable. Played in 4 hours, which is great. $85.00 is just a little too much to pay for Independence GC. In my opinion should be around $50.00, but would play here again if in the area. Now for the bad news. Restaurant was not kind to us since it took over 30 minutes to get any food ordered. Was not the waitress fault, but she went to kitchen 2 times to advise them we were driving a long way home and were very hungry. Paid for drinks, left tip for server and left. By the way the food coming out of the kitchen looked very good! Hopefully we will be back soon. Give the pilot(front desk) and air traffic controller(starter) a raise!! They were fantastic!!
Great layout, length and greens rolled true
Played this course for the first time with my son (college golfer). Course was in excellent condition... greens rolled true... fairways immaculate... bunkers well maintained. Even in windy conditions, this was a great venue and I would play here again... and again. Practice facilities were excellent. This rivals many private courses we have played... can't wait to come back.
FANTASTIC!!!!
Best public course I have ever played!! Great staff, course and pace of play. Best greens you will find anywhere.
Independence GC
Our threesome went off early morning. No problem getting around the course in under 4 hours. It was great fun and the course is in great condition. Some of the best greens I have played on. Can't wait to do it again.
Great conditions
Considering weather and time of year, course conditions incredible. Played number courses recently and all soggy . Yes , spots of water , but overall tee to green very good. Greens great shape and fairways for the most part dry. Had plenty of roll on the fairways and good grass. Very playable course and the rest of facilities very good. Practice facilities very good and never have an issue here with pace. The quality of the staff and clientele make this a truly good golf experience. It's only con is cost. Play a number of courses in area for a lot less. Tavern 19 is a very nice stop after for beer or a great meal. Wife and I will come for dinner even on days not playing. Great layout, very playable and fun. Expensive , but when we play we make sure we have time to enjoy before during and drinks and meal after.
Enjoyable
We were passing through Richmond and looked at this course on the internet. Hard to judge a course by the reviews. This was a great find. Course was in excellent condition despite dry conditions. Challenging but not too tough. We loved this course. Greens were exceptional. Would love to play it again and bring golf buddies.
Beautiful condition
First time playing this course. The condition of the course from tee to green, and including bunkers, was far superior to the other public courses in the area. The price is a little high, but included practice balls and a bottle of water.
I played early, so the pace was quick.
Weathering the rain and cold very well
Course in great shape . Greens and fairways holding their color after all the rain and our first couple frost nights. They are blowing the leafs off the tees , greens and paths , so very uncluttered as opposed to many courses that are covered in fall foliage . Beautiful course that is playable and challenging. Forced carries , rolling fairways and tiered greens that are fast but consistent in speed and roll. Beautiful area and after round don't forget Tavern 19. Enjoyed my first thin crust pizza after round today with a Devils Backbone and was great tavern for drinks . Service was great , friendly and staff here as always been very accomodating . All my playing partners wanted to know is when we can get back.
Excellent par three to hone approach shots
Love this par three to work on short game . How many par three public courses do you see them on tractors with leaf blowers keeping the tees and greens clean? How many regulation courses do you see this? Greens little slower than their championship course, but still above par and very consistent. Good lengths as well. 175-90 par threes to practice mid irons and wedges, and never crowded. Prefer this at times to driving range to practice approaches.
Great course
Had only played the par three once and been wanting to play the championship course , was not disappointed. Sorry to disagree with earlier review , but was greeted and taken care of in proper and friendly matter. Course actually was busier I think than normal, but while paying asked for any hints being neither of us had played this course . Was promptly given a cold bottle of water each, explained how the range balls were out and ready for us to warm up. Walked us out the door showing us where to start , the first and tenth tee and explained where the ice coolers where , the relief houses one on each nine, and coolers were predominant all over the course . Now the course , have not played a course in Richmond market in as excellent condition. From the soft tees to the carpet fairways, the soft and fluffy sand to the extremely fast greens that rolled true and consistent. The views were fantastic . Enjoyed the front nine the most, second nine little shorter and tighter but still easy to catch the fairways. Just an awful lot of houses on the back nine perimeters . Used more 3 woods and irons and hybrids on tees back nine where the front was pull my R15 460 tp and let her rip. All day all I could think of was while touring public colleges and them saying may be public but has a private feel. This is public with a definite private course feeling. Great layout and hope to be a regular. Will try to upload photos because all day felt like in a Kodak moment . Thanks to the staff for a great day.

Good news, Bad news
Have to give them props for the rebuild. This course now has some of the best greens in the area, and the removal of trees and several bunkers has made it an even better layout. But sadly, the attitude of the staff is horrible, absolutely ruining the experience.
Played it twice in two weeks. First time after rain, so was cart path only, and a 15 minute delay in starting. Much to our surprise at the turn, we were greeted with the ominous warning that "they were very cognizant of the time, and take slow play very seriously" and that we were ten minutes behind our scheduled pace. Made for some interesting conversation the rest of our round as we pondered the word "cognizant".
The second round was on one of the hottest days of the year. Without warning, after the first nine, and no drink cart, It turns out they had just several days before removed all the water jugs on the course, as we were told be the same "cognizant" starter they were "very unsanitary". He explained with a straight face, that their strategy was to place ice bins right outside the two bathrooms, (as if anyone actually washes their hands before dipping into them).
So, if you play to their cognizant pace, don't mind the snottiness staff in town, bring your own cooler, and can afford to significantly overpay for the privilege. ...this is the PERFECT place for you. Is very sad actually. Is a great layout, with wonderful potential, and championship level practice facility. I hope they can get their act together ... Maybe next year I can convince my group to try it again.
Beautiful facilities for public course
Impressive. From the initial drive in to view of clubhouse and then the practice facilities to courses. Great par three with a couple 175 yard holes 150 then 125 to 100 . Great warm up from 5 iron to wedges. Every hole has a flagged regulation hole and a flagged 8 inch hole for the junior or beginner. Forced carriers and elevation changes make for great par three. Numerous tee boxes to accommodate any skill level. Costly but would say worth the money just to take the challenge and get a taste of some very nice facilities. Very nice area area and will be paying the full 18 soon.
VERY Solid
This is a very good course. Not ridiculously tough, but an excellent test. Fun to play, but not too easy. Greens not too fast, but very true, so you can sink some long putts!
New fairways, so it's cart path only....I took a cart, but should have walked.....
Great course...for long hitters
I enjoyed this course just wish I was a longer hitter.
Great Day of Golf!
Everyone was super friendly. The Bermuda was starting to go dormant, so the fairways were an off-green, but the greens were immaculate and putted true (but fast!)
Service was excellent along with the meal at the turn. Would certainly play again!
A challenging but fair golf course
Played this course for the first time and hope that I can come back to play it again. Greens were in good shape and some of the fairways looked like they had previous issues which were addressed.
Excellent course, great value with golfnow
I've played Independence before and it has always been a nice course. When we played the other day it was in excellent shape. It is a very scenic and relatively open course. Well worth playing.
Always a Challenge and a Great Course to Play!
See above, but my score should have been better. Spent too much time in the bunkers, but they too were in great shape and gave me some added practice.
