Golf trip ruined
slow play
no ranger
starters did not seem to care
will not return or recommend
left with sour taste
Mountain like course...conditions meh
Based on the cost of this course and how it’s written up on the website, I had an extremely high expectation set for this place. I’ve played golf for years in the mountains so I knew what I was getting myself into in terms of difficulty, but I was honestly disappointed. I would still recommend this course to a friend, but only if you play during twilight and have realistic expectations set.
The conditions were average to decent. But not like you would expect for a course that charges over $70 a round at prime time. The course is difficult, which was to be expected. Pace of play was amazing as we barely saw any other golfers out there. This staff member inside the pro shop was extremely nice as well. It was surprisingly dead for a Sunday afternoon at a resort..
If you’ve not played mountain lake golf before and you are in the area, hit this place up after 3p, but expect conditions much closer to a good public course at your home and not a resort course charging twice as much.
Great course just pace was awful
Had nothing bad to say about it beside the pace of play. It took 15 minutes to get 2 gatorades and a snickers because they only hadn’t one staff member working the bar area.
Hi Tyler - We apologize for the wait. We understand that it is unacceptable. However we do enjoy hearing that you had a great round. We hope you had a great rest of your visit at Oglebay. Thanks again!
Nice course
Played the Jones course. Nice course to play. It was a little windy but really warm. I don't think it should cost as much as it does before the twilight rates kick in.
Hello! We would love to host you during our twilight hours of play. Thanks for the 4 star review and for taking the time to play our course. We hope you had a great round and look forward to seeing you back on sight soon!
Seriously hilly course
This is certainly not a long course, but still plays very tough due primarily to the hilly layout and abundance of awkward lies. The greens are in fair shape for this time of year… Fairly fast with a lot of slope. The challenge is reduced somewhat and that the course has no water and only one sand trap that I can remember.
Thanks for your review. We greatly value your feedback and hope to see you again soon!
Bad
The golf shop is the first thing you see before you play anywhere, it should not be a hassle or should you be treated like an alien .The round was ruined before even teeing off ...ie rude behavior from staff and no sign of golf now reservation even though clearly on my phone I had two confirmed times Saturday and Sunday.Even worse the second day hassled by lady in shop said no golf now t time after even confirming the day before that I would be playing the following day egod .....tried to get a cart and attendant was no where to be found don’t blame him I would run and hit balls too ...fits in well with rest of staff.play elsewhere
Thanks for your review. We are sorry you had poor experience with us and would like to continue this conversation with you. Please reach out to us at info@oglebaygolf.com.
Very hilly course, all sidehill lies
Challenging for those accustomed to level fairways, but the hills made it interesting and fun, although you had to be careful not to roll over in the cart at times! Course was in good condition, friendly staff.
Very nice course.
Great layout and great staff. You can tell they keep the course in great shape. I played right after a heavy rain so the bunkers were hard but that was to be expected. You can tell though even from the rain that they rake the bunkers every day.
Fairways dispicable!
Played with my son and 2 other gentlemen today after driving 1 1/4 hours. Last time I played was 25 years ago. Layout is pretty nice and challenging. However fairways were burned out. Couldn't believe my eyes! When inquired about the burned out fairways, started and ranger indicated local municipality did not allow them to use city water to water the fairways. Probably because the bill was not paid. So for 9 days in all of the heat the area was under, the fairways suffered. Greens were OK. Not the fastest, but OK. Went to clubhouse and voiced displeasure. The lady behind the counter was very nice to talk to and she asked if I would return this year. I stated not until conditions improve. She gave us a rain check for 2 players since we were not real happy. Class act!! I would not play Jones course until conditions improve.
Thank you for the review - I am glad to see you were given a rain-check round as we want all our golfers to have the best experience possible.
Please allow me to shed some light as to why our course is in its current condition. We recently faced water restrictions mandated in response to the failure of the County water tank (which feeds our irrigation system). This led to increased demands put onto the City’s water supplies.
In turn, our golf courses received water levels significantly below normal needs. It also coincided with the hottest and driest time of the summer.
Unfortunately for the Jones and Palmer, fairway turf quality took a hit. Poa annua (Jones' Grass) is less resistant to sweltering heats. Extensive re-grassing will now take place late-July. Bent grass (found on the Palmer) is more resistant to hot, dry conditions. Just four fairways will be reseeded, along with small swales and high tops.
We pride ourselves on being straightforward with guests. Our team is working tirelessly to restore Oglebay’s championship-level conditioning standard. While I assume you we paid our 'water bill' we hope to see you back at Oglebay to use your rain - check round.
An excellent RTJones designed course.
This is a typical RTJones design. Most greens are elevated, so no way to roll up onto the greens. Greens large and rolling, fairly fast. Front nine is extremely hilly, don't even think about walking it! Back nine a little less severe. Played in slightly over 3 and one half hours. Quite a few forced carries to the start of the fairway, be sure to pick the length appropriate to your ability. A good 5 star course, wish it was a little flatter!
Friendly staff, great layout
This was my first time playing at Speidel. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The course was in really great shape considering the incredible amount of rain the night before. The course was fairly empty, so pace of play wasn't an issue. Well worth the hour and 15 minute drive from Pittsburgh. I will be back.
Pace of play
Pace of play here is horrible. 5 hours. No on course marshals. Stay away!
Slow But Interesting
Played the Jones course, and it was an interesting layout. Had a few quirky L shaped holes, including 18, and 8 was a very tricky narrow tee shot with the hillside left and the fairway sloping towards OB right (the driving range). The rough was thick and lush, especially where there would be run off, which seemed a little penal since I had a few tee shots run just off the fairway thanks to gravity into rough that was more than ankle deep. Greens were in good shape, quick going down slow going uphill. Only main issue is it was very slow as you'd expect at a resort course - I started solo and played the first 6 or so holes in 30ish minutes. From there the last 12 took almost 3:30.
Overall though you can probably do worse and it's a fun mountain course. Find a deal online and it's worth the few miles from I-70 if you're driving through the area.
Great Day
Lucky to get a warm day in December in West Virginia. Great to get a tee time on an outstanding golf course “Hit Deal”.
Really enjoyed the round
Worth the drive from Pittsburgh
I have been wanting to play this course for years. Well worth the wait. Excellent fairways, greens, and tee boxes. Very well maintained. Sprinkler and 200, 150, and 100 yard markers. Staff very nice. Good food and beer options. I will come back to shoot better since I now know a little about the course. Very minor complaints. For the regular rates they charge a GPS system should be on the cart. If no GPS then the score card of tee markers should have some sort of distance to bunkers, doglegs, ponds, etc. I lost several shots because I did not have the correct game plan on each hole. The other issue is many blind shots to the greens. This is the standard in Western PA/WVU but seeing the pin makes a big difference . Other than that great course and I have played over 100
Fantastic golfing
Fantastic golfing One of the nicest courses I have played Great staffing
What a gem
This course is in phenomenal shape. The layout is amazing and there are so many holes that stand out. Pace of play was just a little longer than I am used to but didn't hinder my experience. The 10 dollar golfnow deal honestly feels like robbery. This course is amazing and will play over and over again.
Excellent
I really enjoyed my experience at speidel Palmer course. It was very wet but the greens were perfect . Bring a rangefinder because the distances aren't well marked and the greens are huge!
Great Time
The course was in good shape and the staff was very nice.
The course got rid of the cart GPS systems they used to have last year and we were not aware of that prior to going. Luckily one in the group did bring their GPS.
