It's great knowing the distance, but as we saw from your putting, the first putt you hit harder even though you didn't take it back any further. What's a good way to control how hard you hit it regardless of how far you take it back? I'm guessing that must be related to tempo?

I had a similar thought a few years ago. I went to the practise green and hit some putts using my back foot as the stop point of my back swing. This enabled me to determine how far I hit my putts ranging from a narrow to a wide stance. The key to this is having a consistent swing speed which means the only variable is the swing length. I did not measure the result but it gave me a visual image of the ratio of back foot placement to distance travelled.
This was done prior to every round on whichever course I was playing so I had up-to-date information for the speed of the greens on that day for that course in the prevailing weather conditions.
One important point is that, as you widen your stance, your lower the putter head so you need to lower your grip accordingly. Also, there is obviously a limit on how wide you can go depending on your leg length so, for long putts, you can practise these using a faster (but still consistent) swing speed.
I have been using this method for some time now. My putt average for this year (I don’t play in the winter) was 34.6 and, yes, there were some 3 putts in there.
