Course needs better upkeep and cart paths
Overall it is a nice course to play but, the cart paths need replaced. Most paths are unusable and people just use the grass which just causes damage to the grass. Tee boxes are mismanaged and have a of bare spots. Course is a fun layout and has 3 nines to choose from. The west course is the better nine due to not being as old. The clubhouse and the restaurant are immaculate and the staff is very friendly. They need to spend some money and time on this course to make it a premier place to play.
Challenging Course; Sand & Geese Issues
I’ve played South Hills many times over the years, and I’ve always thought it was a challenging course. I don’t think there is a single flat green on any of the three 9-hole courses, and the greens are usually a little on the quick side. Today it was absolutely treacherous putting downhill. At my age, having lost distance on my drives, I do appreciate that they have added many green tee boxes situated between the yellow and the red tee boxes. The layout of the course is challenging, but fair. You need to be accurate with the direction of your driver, as many fairways are on the narrow side. There are two aspects of South Hills that detract from my enjoyment playing there. First, the sand in the traps is far below the quality that I expect on a decent course. I regularly play 5 or 6 local courses, and the quality of the sand traps at South Hills is the lowest of any of those courses. It is so bad that my partners and i usually pull out balls out of the traps and drop them onto some grass. My second issue is with the large number of geese on the course and the amount of goose droppings on some of the tee boxes. Sometimes it’s hard to avoid stepping on goose poop!
Was less than average
Course was okay. Some tee boxes needed some love. Greens had some serious issues. Especially on the “West” course; seems the bees were boring holes in the greens. It is a “locals” course and there were many play groups, luckily I was paired with better than average golfers and it made the round go quickly. I could not wrap my head around that they advertised 6 pack domestic $12, but three purchased inside was $13… two bottles of water was $6.
Major concerns
Course was a fair set up. Would be nice to see/play in better conditions.
Tee boxes were loaded with divots. No sand to tend to divots. . 2nd/3rd greens (West) were infested with in-ground hives. 2nd green had seven hives! Cart paths need major attention.
Starter was indecisive at which nine to begin. No starter available to direct where to proceed for the “back” nine.
Could Be Better
I've played here on several occasions in the past and this is probably the worst I've seen the greens. Only 2 (no more than 3) had almost no dry spots or crackled ground/grassy knobs. I think most "decent" golfers would prefer the greens to be in top shape and the fairways/tee boxes to be underkept. That said, the course, as always, is a fun layout and the greens are nicely undulated. The pace of play was terrible, but it was a Saturday. Old people playing from the whites and barely driving it 180 slowed down the pace a lot. It's a fun course and it's hard to beat the price. However, with it being a hot day, I am quite disappointed that there were zero water stations. Luckily, I brought plenty. If you don't mind putting through dry spots and dirt clumps, play this course. If you do, avoid it.
Safe your money
Fairways are brown, tee boxes are in need of serious attention. Bunkers are full of debris rocks etc. I will not go back.any time soon.
Good Time On Links
Everything was good playing the course Saturday. Wasn’t overly packed for a Saturday round. Got slowed on the back nine but still ok pace. Course is in excellent condition.
Pleasant Surprise
The course was a little farther than I would normally drive but pleasantly surprised what a great experience!
Slow Pace
We played the South course behind a couple and a foursome. It was slow! When we turned to the North course, we were behind two foursomes and a threesome. It was excruciatingly slow. My partner left after #12 because he could not endure the pace.
