Better reviews make it out to be
Played red front 9. Layout was pretty straightforward. A couple of blind tee shots. Was pleasantly surprised by course considering average ratings. Greens were on the slower side but rolled well and were very soft and in better than average shape. Fairways had no weeds and gave nice tight lays. Rough was patchy and had some weeds. Pace of play was great. Will be back. Would like to play the blue course.
Definitely a comeback course
Played the Blue Course again today, definitely on the mend. Greens were excellent, fairways tight and the rough is coming down and playable. I’ve been playing this course for thirty-five years and it’s in awesome shape and getting better by the day. I love the characters who are a mixture of over diverse society including retired professional athletes, golf pros and hustlers of every level and ability. I have played probably 20 rounds this season since the new management has taken over and will continue to play weekly.
Good comeback
Highland Park, at least the blue course, is back in great shape. Was down for a couple years, but I would not hesitate to play this course again or bring friends to play it also.
Staff was exceptionally rude
Never have I been treated so poorly by a staff member. I booked a 9 hole round on this course only to be yelled at when trying to start on the first tee since apparently the blue course does not offer 9 holes only. This was after I checked in at the pro shop, and the starter yelling at us insisted it was my fault and not their websites. Had he approached in a sane way I wouldnt have had a problem, but to pull up screaming get off that tee now is just unnacceptable. I emplore everyone to refrain from patronizing this course.
Good but...
The course is very straight forward. Accuracy off the tee is very helpful because the rough past the second cut is thick. We spent quite a bit of time searching for shots that on other courses would have been quick to find. There are no yardage markers so bring your range finder. We had none in front or behind us on a Friday morning 8:30 ish so the pace was good and allowed us to play a second shot if needed. As a relatively new golfer I would say they could spruce it up a bit and tend to the needs of the course more, but at $37 hot deal with a cart for 18 on a Friday, I'm not gonna complain.
Only good with a Hot Deal
The course conditions have improved a little over the last two years since being taken over. I played the Blue course and have always hatted the layout and lack of guidance to the next hole. Some of the fairways and greens were in good shape, but became kind of poor beyond that because of taller grass and cut grass clippings left all over the place. This makes locating your ball off the fairways extremely difficult. A Hot Deal for $20 and this course is worth it, but anymore than that I'll drive a little further and pay more for a better course. It wouldn't take a ton of work to take this course to a better level (i.e.- fill in ditches throughout, ball washers, garbage cans, more paved cart paths from hole to hole, shorter cut grass off the fairways, and raked). Hopefully they keep improving.
Aside from the greens, awful shape and conditioning
Greens are in good shape. Otherwise, awful conditions prevent this course from approaching anything resembling enjoyable or a fair test. Rough even 6 feet off fairway is not mowed and 6 plus inches tall. And when things are mowed, it’s mulched so you cannot find your ball. Layout is all straight holes with minimal variety, and some very frustrating and nonsensical layouts (eg 1 and 18 - typical driver landing zone is a huge hazard. Unless you drive 280 plus or want to add an extra shot, these holes are not strategic and are just stupid. Would not return.
A Comeback
So pleased to have played today, growing up this was the closest course and my friends and I would play here. Unfortunately, after some time the course fell into dissaray and they even stopped aerating the greens and removing grass clippings from the course when they would now.
I walked this 18 hole course, no 9 hole option, there is an old concession building after the 9th hole which was be great to see one day reopen. Also, this course I have heard was the home to the Cleveland Open PGA tournament. I feel after today it is getting closer to those golden times. The greens were getting quick and rolled mostly true with no dead spots which had been a problem for a while. Grass clippings were non existent and overall course conditions were good with some ditches and rough spots in some fairways and immediate rough areas.
It seems a decision was made to keep other parts more natural and the natural plants added beauty to the course as well as made some holes, ala the 18th more difficult, as the carry became longer, if you choose to attempt a driver over the ravine I slightly missed the sweet spot and though a decent drive was now not enough to carry no man's land. A beast from the tips which I played today with par 4's at or longer than many recreational golfera play par 5's at, a tested design played by Arnold Palmer, Tiger woods and Jack Nicklaus. I hope the progress continues.
Still room for improvement
The greens are back in great shape.rest of course is either rough or fairway if you miss fairway you can spend more time looking for your ball than you do golfing
Improved
When I first played a few years ago, the course was poorly maintained. Since new management, the course maintenance has improved considerably and is my go to course for practice.
Don't play Blue course
I was very disappointed in the blue course I had to stop playing it on the third hole the maintenance of the lawn was bad I called the staff and they said play the red course it's much better and they where right I was pleased.
not ready
This course is not ready for play yet. I -played the red course the weekend before and that course was in good shape, so I figured the Blue course had to be good also. I was wrong. I cannot believe they are taking peoples money and sending them out on this course. It's robbery.
very nice course layout. wish it was in better condition the greens are in terrible shape and it was like playing in a swamp everywhere else
Not ready to be open for play.
With the rich history of this course, I can’t help but say how disappointed I was. I know they are trying to bring it back to exceptable conditions. Obviously they haven’t been able to mow in a while and what they did mow, they left clumps of grass to just make your ball dissapear, they should mow, clean up and take care of those greens before opening to the public. I’d give it another month before opening. Thank goodness we could switch to the red course where it was playable.
