Fox Den Golf Course

I golf here regularly and the story is almost always the same (at least on weekends).

Fox Den is wonderfully taken care of and plays extremely fair. The layout does lend to some awkward moments if you have an mis-hit as the holes play very close to one another. There aren’t a lot of woods, so an inexperienced golfer shouldn’t lose too many balls.

Off course, the clubhouse is excellent and the driving range and putting greens are great and well maintained. If you plan to eat here, the food is well above-average, albeit a bit expensive. However, you need to order ahead on the 8th hole if you’re making the turn, otherwise you’ll be reprimanded by the staff continually.

Where things go sour is the pace of play. When I say it’s abysmal, I mean it’s ABYSMAL. On the weekends, you will be backed up from the first hole to the 18th hole. Expect to wait a minimum of 5 minutes per tee box and your weekend 18-hole round will take about 5 hours on average.

Overall, for the area, I think Fox Den is a great choice in terms of playability and conditions. If you’re not in a rush or don’t mind waiting, this is a wonderful course. If you’re impatient or sensitive to pace-of-play, then I recommend staying away. It’s a bit overpriced for what it is, but at least it is a consistent experience with great off-course amenities, which is more than most courses can say in this area.

Decided last minute I felt like golfing there were only a few times avail. Starter did a great job handling tee sheet and putting people together to keep things moving. Was a single so played with 3 people I didn’t know. They were awesome. Course is fun. There are a couple holes where if you miss the fairway or are even on the wrong side of the fairway, you will be blocked out by trees. Layout reminds me a lot of Fowlers Mill where I used to be a member at. Utilizes the natural land well, not a lot of water comes into play but change in elevation plays as a hazard of its own. Greens were pure. Exceptional for how dry it’s been. There are a few courses right now locally where you can’t hold a green period. I can’t emphasize the greens enough. Very receptive, true pretty fast too. I will definitely come back.

Front 9 was very slow. Twosome in front of us sharing a bag and 3 times 1 of them hit a second tee shot while we were waiting or approaching the tee. Back 9 went much faster. Ball marks everywhere on all the greens. Need someone to remind people to "Fix Your Ball Marks"! If this course is going to be friendly to new golfers, that is fantastic. Have someone there to help them understand proper etiquette though. Like the course but need to improve pace of play and the condition of the greens. Too many geese as well.

Pros: fast greens, fairways cut, motorcycle style carts available

Cons: slow play, tall rough

Overall, the course was in really good condition. If you hit a good drive down the fairway, it will bounce and rolling additional 10 to 20 yards and the greens rolled true. The pace of play was extremely slow. other than that I would play this course.

The course was in pretty decent shape. Had an early teatime so from nine greens real little frozen, which was to be expected this time of year. OK it’s February and we were golfing, so not a lot of complaints other than the price we paid to play this time of year. Could have charged about $10 less.

Look, I get that it was the day before Thanksgiving, but there is no excuse for 75 pounds of goose manure on every single green. If you’re going to charge $40, the player should at least have a chance to putt on one green.

Frankly, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Good test and a course you need to think your way through. Trouble lurked just off the fairway in the landing areas, so you can have an approach with a chance at birdie or you could be taking your medicine. Hitting a 3 wood on a few of the holes keeps you short of the trouble.

I have always enjoyed playing fox den, but recently it has just gotten slower and slower. They over book their tee times way too often that there is just no enjoyment of playing there anymore. Sad that I’ll be crossing this course off of one of my regulars.
