It's coming back
Surrey has a great little layout and 27 holes so you can almost always get on. They hired a new greenskeeper and it really looks like they are trying to get the course back into shape. A few bare spots but it is still early in the season. Overall I would recommend this course.
First time at Surrey
I decided it would be cool to have my friends come play a round of golf Saturday morning. We got out there and quickly realized the course was very poorly maintained and every one of the greens had weeds growing in them, huge divots that were not caused by golf balls in a few holes, and the fairways all were almost dirt.
I was kind of embarassed to bring my friends there after the first hole and then it progressively got worse over the course of the game. I am not a professional golfer by any means however when I hit a straight line at the cup and it bounces out of line from the overgrown weeds, it makes me not want to play there again. Definitely not worth the money to play there again.
Winter Play
The course needs a lot or repairs to make it an above average course. The tee boxes are uneven. The fairways have numerous patches of dirt. The greens are the best part of the course but some are showing wear. The carts are below average, and some have broken down during play. The bottom line is this course needs new ownership and a lot of money for repairs.
My last round here
I live in the neighborhood surrounding the course and I will legitimately never play this course again. I’ve played a handful of times and had the worst experience every time, don’t even know why I ever came back after the first time. I heard someone call it “goat pasture” golf and I think that’s even being generous. You can’t hardly tee up on any box without a hammer. The fairways are abysmal and I’m surprised every time I step on to the green; I’ve never seen a golf course like it. I don’t know if the ownership just flat out gave up or what but there isn’t a worse golf course I’ve ever seen. The fact that they make people pay $30-50 to play here is insanity. It’s not worth $10. I wouldn’t accept a free membership for life at this course. Just save your money and time.
Winter Play
Surrey Hills is making course repairs, and ownership needs to make more repairs as weather permits. The course can be a challenge. Staff was friendly.
would not recommend
The course was in bad shape, the greens were very bumpy and had lots of bald spots. The tee boxes and fairways had issues too. There were some holes where it was difficult for a first-time player to figure the layout of the hole. All in all, not a course I would recommend until it's in better shape.
Room for improvement
The course layout is the best thing this course has going for it. It's a great layout, difficult but fair. The fairways need work. Very dry and cracked. Greens are okay.
Improvements Needed
The Pro Shop staff were courteous. The course needs work but the current staff are trying to make improvements with limited resources. Tee boxes definitely need work. A need for a Marshall was evident as play was extremely slow.
would not recommend
Sadly, the course was not in good shape. the tee boxes and greens were in very poor condition - sometimes hard to find a good spot for the tee and all the greens were very bumpy. There were a few funky holes IMHO; as first time players, we weren't really sure where the green was, and there was no GPS in the carts to help us, or course diagrams on the scorecard, the only clue was on the tee box signs and they weren't that much help. Overall, I would not recommend this course at this time due to playing conditions.
old mature layout. Plays long on the front 9.
the rough was in better shape than the fairways! greens were bubby. on smooth roll. the course definitely needs a lot of work.
Lives up to the poor reviews
The course has potential and always has. The staff is friendly and that’s the only compliment I can give. At over $45 per person this puts it over the price point of the municipal courses and you get lousy practice facilities and a course that is just shy of a cow pasture. Tee boxes are rough, fairways are rough, greens are a less than good, sand traps are dirt traps, and there are really no yardage markers to speak of. The Friday we went tee times are booked every 10 minutes so pace of play was slow. Living on the NW side of town we are limited on public courses and I will go out of my way to play elsewhere to play a course that fits the price point.
Not bad, not great
Greens were in rough shape. Fairways were hit and miss (much like my game). Some signage was confusing or missing. I couldn't tell where hole 1 was until I asked.
gesh
Course is in terrible condition. Fairways are awful, about half the tee boxes require a hammer, and the greens are bumpy.
Surrey Hills
Overall a great experience. Decently challenging course. The layout gets confusing sometimes when navigating from hole to hole. Par 5 18 i got lost and I still don’t know where the green was. Had a great time and the course conditions were well above avg. would definitely play again.
