Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2020.
Located just south of Allentown, Pa., Locust Valley Golf Course is less than hour from Philadelphia and the Poconos and only 15 minutes from the New Jersey border. The course is player friendly enough for high handicappers to approach with confidence but there are a few challenges in store as well. The 6,504-yard layout is a manageable length but there are still a few holes that will test your distance. The terrain is mostly flat though there are a few subtle contours that can be tricky. The fairways have a lot of variation with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are tighter and demand greater accuracy. You'll also have to watch out for the occasional water hazard. Locust Valley is not the most challenging golf course in the area, but it's one of the best values you'll find in town.

if you can't play private-this is a good. Public choice.
The pace of play here has always been a nice professional level. No pushing and no rudeness.
The course has a few challenges, is quiet and well cared for. Always enjoy it here
I've played this course many times over thee years and under this ownership the course is in its best condition.
Challenging and Fun
Locust Valley is a great place to play golf it's always in good shape and the layout is challenging but fair. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. The Club has been around for a long time so give it a chance. Arnold Palmer has the course record just in case you were wondering.
Current Course Conditions
I've reviewed this course in detail before so this is just an update on current course conditions. The course is in pretty good shape for early April especially the greens. They are lush and smooth. Due to the unseasonably warm weather in February and early March, the staff has been cutting the greens for over a month and it has paid dividends. The greens were a bit on the slow side maybe an 8-9 on the stimp but they rolled true. The tee boxes and fairways were all in pretty shape but need to fill in. The rough is very spotty. The sprinkler system does not adequately water the rough and they paid the price late last year. There are many spots that are nothing but hard pan. The bunkers are so so and some are better than others but very inconsistent. Some bunkers have way too much sand and some bunkers have almost none and are down to dirt with stones throughout. There are some holes that are tree lined and the ground is mostly bare under the trees with tons of exposed roots. Save your club and wrist and take a drop. They really need to take down a lot of trees. It would improve course conditions considerably. As I've said before, a fun layout and challenging from the back two sets of tees. Greens are difficult. Go Play, Enjoy!
Tough course, tougher facilities
A tough and interesting layout. Greens were small-medium sized, had lots of slopes and plenty of adjacent bunkers. (A fair number of fairway traps, as well.) Some tight, tree-lined, canted fairways with elevation changes. Water on at least two holes.
The 130 slope from the blue tees was deserved.
Course was in good shape, even after heavy rain the day before. Greens’ speed was medium.
I’d give the course 4 stars out of five stars. However, the facilities would get about two. Meager pro shop is in an old, ugly barn and the bathroom looked and felt about fifty years old. Cart paths are deteriorating.
I had a great Hot Deal, but given it’s about an hour’s drive from my place in the Philly area, I probably won’t play again.
Nice Layout
If your going there for a range, putting green and food and drink, then your going to be disappointed. But I went there to play golf, and I was not disappointed. The course was in excellent condition, except for 1 bunker had water in it. All the tee boxes, fairways and greens were out-standing. Great layout with elevation changes, sidehill lies and strategic bunkering. I'm definitely playing again before houses are built there.
I shall return!
Loved Locust Valley GC. What a gem in the middle of Coopersburg. For early March the course was in great shape. Can't wait to see it in full bloom this summer. Challenging greens and pin placement. Bunker sand was light and easy to cut thru. Wonderful find!
Winter Golf
First time ever playing this course. I found the course interesting. The course is built on the top and side of a mountain. This causes some extreme fairway slopes and so truly difficult approach shots. The greens were in great shape considering it was February. This course is certainly worth playing once but with no driving range and not many amenities I probably won't return.
Wow!
Amazing day in February!...75 degrees and sunny...Got paired up with a real nice couple...quite a few errant shots first time out...but course was in great shape for February, and it was just great to get out!
Play it before it closes and becomes a development
This is a former country club and has a great layout. We played here in Feb and super warm weather for this time of year. They even had mowers out cutting grass! The greens and traps were in mid season form already. The course is allegedly being sold and land developers will have their way with it. Right now they say they are going to be open all of 2017 and most of 2018. The pro shop is very small as is the food area. Most golfers go elsewhere after a round since they do not afford much here. Watch GOLFNOW for super hot deals at this course.
February golf at Locust Valley
I had a very enjoyable round in early February at LV. The course is in very good shape. There was no standing water on the course and the greens and tees were in very good shape. There are a number of challenging holes and so would recommend trying this course
Al from Telford
Been playing LV since 1978 when it was a private CC. Always enjoy it. Challenging, pretty and a fast paced course. Everything I look for. New owners have made improvements. Good people! Looking forward to going back.
great value
terrific course, in fine shape, and friendly staff, well done
Current Conditions are so-so
I played this course with my son in late September. The sprinkler system does not hit the rough so the rough was either patchy or non existent. I like this track a lot. It is an older styled tree lined course that is not very long but still challenges the above average golfer. I give the three star rating mostly because of the rough and the condition of many of the bunkers. They did add sand to almost all of the bunkers in the spring but heavy rains tend to wash them out by the end of the summer. The best way to describe them now are inconsistent. Some have plenty of sand some are almost bare. The way to get around that is don't hit it there :-). But seriously the bunkers need to get redone from scratch to fix the problem with proper lining in the base and drainage. It could also use an upgrade to the Springer system to cover the rough so it can withstand a very dry late summer. There is a new owner who has made many improvements but he is in a little battle with the township wrt to preserving the land as open space and getting some tax breaks and a revenue infusion to make the improvements. The tees greens and fairways were mostly in pretty good shape with some patches that were thin or bare, Still a lot of fun to play. Also be careful when you hit the ball into the trees. There are many exposed roots that can inflict some damage.... But again, don't hit it there!
If you want a challenge
It's not as easy as it looks. Long, narrow, tree line fairways makes it a challenge for a decent second shot.
And then when you get to the greens, they are undulating and tilt back to front. Try to stay below the hole. Many of the greens are pinched in by bunkers that gobble up your approach shot. This course was designed by the Gordons, Father and Son team, and that seems to be there trademark.
Bring your flip flops
I have to say that even when I go to the beach I don't spend as much time in the sand as I did during my round here. Pretty much every green is protected by decent sized bunkers, and the fairway bunkers are in play on most of the holes. The course is well maintained and our Sunday morning round played in about 4.5 hours. We had to wait on a couple holes as the fairways are back to back so errant tee shots find adjacent holes pretty easily, but overall the round moved along at an average pace.
I will definitely play this course again.
Boring layout, killer greens
The title tells you everything. Other than the holes near the road the holes are straight, straight, and then more straight. Followed by some of the best trapped greens I've seen around, with hard fast greens. So you mentally get bored hitting similar tee and approach shots, followed by needing to set your approach shots with an uphill lie because the greens are a killer. If in the traps they are raked well and you need to get them close to score well. Part of the game is entertaining the eyes to figure out the shots needed and the whole round was only about putting. I don't think they had food, not sure. They need to cut some trees or plant some flower beds. Something...
Come back course of the Lehigh Valley
This course was destined for the scrapyard a few years ago. A new owner arrived and dumped alot of cash into it. In my opinion, it has become one of the nicest courses in the Lehigh Valley. The Greens are fantastic, a little quick downhill but rolling nice. Most of the traps are ok but some of them need a little sand.
I play in a friday evening league and all of us are very happy with the conditions. It's a busy course. The secret is out and everyone wants to play here. Fairways are plush and the tee's are well manicured. The front 9 is the toughest. #3 and#4 are the two hardest hole back to back in the area. The back nine is definitely easier to play. Give it a shot and write a review. Tony "C"
