Located just south of Allentown, Pa., Locust Valley Golf Course is less than hour from Philadelphia and the Poconos and only 15 minutes from the New Jersey border. The course is player friendly enough for high handicappers to approach with confidence but there are a few challenges in store as well. The 6,504-yard layout is a manageable length but there are still a few holes that will test your distance. The terrain is mostly flat though there are a few subtle contours that can be tricky. The fairways have a lot of variation with some that are wide and forgiving and others that are tighter and demand greater accuracy. You'll also have to watch out for the occasional water hazard. Locust Valley is not the most challenging golf course in the area, but it's one of the best values you'll find in town.

Locust Valley
Overall I was pleased with playing at Locust Valley. We were in a bit of a rush since we were leaving town later that day and I was delighted that we were the first off that morning. I played this course many years ago and it is in good shape just the way I remembered it.
wonderful course
totally isolated and quiet course. We enjoyed a lot.
tough course
Had not been to Locust Valley in over 10 years before my visit on 7/24. The course looks great and plays pretty darn good too.. The fairways are narrow and tough to hit.. The greens are small and well trapped.. You have to be extremely accurate on this course. The greens are tough to hold with approach shots and need some softening... As firm as the greens are you'd think they putt extremely fast but the speed of them on putting is average.. The biggest issue here is speed of play.. Our round took too long and we waited on almost every shot.. It was a gorgeous day and I was not working so I did not mind so much but others in my group were annoyed.. Locust Valley is in a lovely setting and the course is quite a challenge.. If they could speed the pace of play and make the greens a bit more receptive to well stuck iron shots they'd have a gem..
Sand was nice than the beach
great course with the best sand I've ever been in. not rushed at all. greens were very fast would play again.
tough course and great value
Finally the Rock has come back to Locust Valley after over 10 years.. The weather was picture perfect... The course was in good shape.. The fairways and greens were firm .. It was very hard to hold the greens with any type shot yet the greens did not putt as fast as you'd think.. The par 4's are tough and the fairways are very tight and tough to hit.. For the value, this place rocks.. We paid 21 dollars for an afternoon round.. The pace of play was slow and they do need a ranger to keep things moving better.. But when you talk about how good this course is and how challenging it is.. for 21 dollars on a deal you can live with a little slowness.
this course is good
only problem is greens are harder , even the ball lands from height it bounce off the green. to much rolling. should fix it.
great course
The course was in great condition the rough was fair and playable..fairways and tee boxes were excellent you could actually put a tee in the ground.,I just happened to be playing very good that day but could see where if my game was alittle off it would be a much tougher course
Horrendous Waiting: 5 1/2 hour round!
Overall Locust Valley is a relatively decent place to play. I have played here a couple of times before and I like the course. The people are friendly and the course is a decent challenge from the back tees.
The whole purpose of this review is to drive home to the management that there SHOULD NEVER BE a 5.5 hour round and I do not care if it was a holiday weekend. This isn't the golfers fault as much as the course stacking the tee times. I hope you guys raked in the cash at all of our expense!
There were some real hackers who need a lesson in how to speed up play. 3 practice swings to prepare to hit the ball 20 yards is ridiculous. I really don't know anyone who would disagree with this thought and yet... we all encounter these people from time to time. I don't care if you are a high handicapper... that's okay... just speed it up... for all of us. Poor play is one thing but that combined with slow play is just plain torture.
When we arrived on the first tee we were the second group waiting to tee off, there was another group in the middle of the fairway and another group approaching the green. Need I say more? We knew it was going to be ugly but we didn't know how ugly. Seeing the play clocks reminding us of what our pace of play should be ever so often just made me want to laugh after I screamed.
Also, since the course was absolutely packed... why in the heck would the snack shop close at 5pm (on a holiday weekend) and also there was no beverage cart circulating.. Absolutely stupid not only from a business standpoint, but just a kick in the teeth to all of us who wanted to ease our pain of waiting with a beer or two.
I am very disappointed in the experience. VERY! It may just prevent me from ever coming back again. I feel like the management just didn't care and of course there is no real recourse other than not going back. Courses need to manage tee times and rate of play!
With that said, the hot dog I had was kind of tasty.
1960s Lehigh Valley feel.
If you like sameness on all approaches, tricked out green levels and interesting doglegs this course has them. two traps in every throat, one on each side are typical of a lot of courses in this area, that were built in the 30s 40s 50s 60s.
Some work needed
Greens were good as were the fairways in general, roughs need some care, looks a bit unkempt. Was playing with my wife, saw several women on course as welll. So, the fact that the women's tees look like an afterthought is not the best way to attract them to the course. The blind drive on #8 is a bit dangerous. was slooooow. Used to be one of my go-to courses, much better value courses in the area for the price would have expected better.
Decent course but not worth the ride
coming from NJ we were looking for a new course to play. 50 min ride not worth coming back. Closer would play again. We played Wed around noon. Problem was the course was full of elderly people. Some very elderly. No disrespect to the seniors, but it was SLLLOOOOWWWW. no ranger (they prob don t care), cart girl once all day. On the plus side, greens are challenging and fast. Layout- usual for a 50 yr old course. some tight holes, some blind shots and a few tricky shots.
Enjoyable round
The course was in good shape. Greens were a little rough but not horrible. Pace of play was great for a weekend afternoon but it did back up around 13.
There are some very interesting holes and local course knowledge is a big help.
I will definitely play here again.
An Old Gem
I lived in the area (within 25 miles) for over 20 years and this was the first time I played the course and I was very pleasantly surprised. It is a William Gordon design. He worked under Flynn and designed all three Saucon Valley courses as well as the The Stanwich Club in Greenwich Ct. I've been fortunate enough to have played all four of those world class courses and while LVGC doesn't have the budget or all the country club amenities of those classics, you won't be disapointed with the LVGC layout. it is an old traditional style course which is very tight in places and moderately bunkered. The greens have some good contour to them and are challenging. The course is a bit on the short side by todays standards measuring in at 6,700 yards from the tips. The overall conditions were very good for this time of the year as the grass has not really popped during a colder than normal spring. Greens ran true, Fairways, bunkers and tee boxes were all in good shape. I look forward to playing it again soon
if playing for the first time, take notice of the approach to the eigth hole to your right while playing the first hole The eight is a blind tee shot and the fairway goes down hill to the eight green.
Nice course
Great course lay out greens were rolling nice for being early in the yr. Will definitely b going back. BUT THEY NEED A BETTER CLUB HOUSE. sorry guys u know u do. But great course. Thanks
Played from the back tees
Enjoyed playing this course. Played one other time. Conditions were decent and would play again.
Nice Course
Course was in great condition. Greens were in excellent shape as were fairways and tees. Lots of sand traps, some had minimal sand in them, creating challenging shots.
Slow
Course was in good shape. Play was way too slow. One continuous backup. A ranger may have helped. Players need to be willing to pair up to help move play along.
Surprisingly Challenging
This is not a fancy place, but the course is very challenging, especially the putting. Plenty of green-side bunkers. Most holes are pretty wide open and are fairly long. For the money ($29) for 18 holes, it's hard to find a better value. I will definitely play here again.
Good Course
This a good corse with a bunch of different holes, however about half the holes has a fairway bunker that is so big its hard to carry on the drive. And the greens are very hard to read!!! would go back if I got it for $20 again!
feels like the first time playing this course
I've played this course a few times, years ago. I found a great deal on golfnow, but didn't know anything about the course conditions. I remembered I like the course layout but not that great in condition wise. I saw a lot of raving reviews on golfadvisor.com so I decided to try it . WOW WHAT A GREAT COURSE! I can't wait to go back! the only 2 problems I had was there's no practice range, and yardage markers were you and far between. I found myself asking how far am I a lot.
